I don't understand how the PS3 can sell that much software yet move just like 10-11k units/week.

Most of the people who buys the games usually being released on PS3 already bought the consoles years ago. Moreover, mroe than half those sales are LR's.

I'm not just talking about this week sales, look at the total FY sales. So far the PS3 sold more software this FY than the Vita/PSP/WiiU/Wii/NDS/360 combined, yet its FY HW YTD is only about ~400k, not that much more than the Wii U (~334k).

Apart from 3DS, PS3 is the only other healthy ecosystem for third parties and its software sales are not bad. However its too late in its life cycle to have hardware bumps despite selling so much software.

I know it doesn't mean much, but it's quite a good sign that Mario Kart 8 is so high, even though Nintendo has shown literraly nothing since E3.

I believed that most people (in Japan, at least) were expecting SMB 3DS more than the Wii U version...

And I'm kinda happy I was wrong! :)

It's Nintendo version of Call of Duty - what do you need to know before buying next part ?

haha if you think the Wii U version will actually sell more in Japan of all places

Probably not but smash bro's on 3DS is really an unknown quantity since it's a games whose legacy is local multipllayer. It's like removing ad-hc from MH and leaving only online, but probably worse than that since online and ad hock are at leat similar, No local to online not so much.

It's likely the reason why MKwii outsold the ds version despite the difference in install base.

Presumably it has a large and active userbase. I think that holds true globally too.

Yeah, the market for the PS3 is saturated already, and unless Sony does something drastic like sell the PS3 for under $100, there won't be an dramatic uptick of PS3 sold.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Lol

That's all I can say.

Square Enix really screwed up with this title.

if only the Wii U had 2/3 of the 3DS's worldwide userbase

I really don't know how Wii U is going to reach 10M lifetime at this rate :(
Flash sales could do it...
I think the Dreamcast had done around 5 million WW when it was discontinued, but there was excess stock sold for less than the price of a game inflating the sales figure to 10 million.
They might realize that now if Mario 3d World fails worldwide. But, up until a few months ago, they seemed to believe that betting on known entities, new games very similar to successful predecessors was their safest bet.

Their line up with the Wii U has likely been their most conservative one ever, so it'd be a big direction change from where they are right now, and any change of direction likely won't be noticed until one or two years from now at least, and that's only if they realize their mistake, something they haven't really shown yet.

Really, just look at most mainstream marketing for 3d World. It makes the game look much more like a bland NSMB-like game than what it actually is. Nintendo's higher ups right now seem to believe that this extreme sense of familiarity is actually a selling point, even though it seems to be completely backfiring.
It might have been too hard to give it BC, but imagine how this would have looked if Nintendo had released a Wii HD in 2009 and kept some of the momentum. They might have run into a Sega juggling too many systems at the same time (Sega were at one point selling the Master System, Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast at the same time), but if they could have made a fairly cheap successor back then they could have been in a much better spot unless I'm overestimating the Wii phenomena.

DC surpassed 10-11M before discontinuing. It crossed 5M in America alone in 2000 (Discontinued 2001)

Not actually that important
You know, this sales week spawned two spin-offs threads about Lighting Returns's and Mario's debuts, but I thought another important piece of news would have been considered that important. This!

For the first time, we're getting REAL download numbers. It's just so good to finally have something much more concrete than what we were getting before, except for the times Nintendo directly addressed the matter. It's quite exciting, I admit. I hope other trackers, especially outside of Japan, will start doing it as well.

Holy cow, I had completely missed that, thank for the reminder man

I hope Famitsu releases a top 100 or something annually for download numbers. I'm super curious how DQX did on the eShop.

Nintendo generally refuses to buy studios because lets be honest most of the Industry doesn't want to work for Nintendo so if Nintendo buys them likely lose most of the staff rendering the buy useless.

You don't know what you are talking about. Studio cultures always take a hit after being acquired no matter what. It has nothing to do with Nintendo being the acquirer despite your lack of understanding the M&A process.

Nintendo didn''t acquire studios even during the NES and SNES days even when they could have and mostly just held minor equity stakes in developers it had deep collaborations with. At times they sold the equity back.

There are plenty of developers that would love to work for Nintendo - NCL just doesn't believe in overpaying for the equity of a studio if they can just hire those people itself or get them to work for them. Next Level for example loves working with Nintendo - despite that they haven't been acquired.

EAD Tokyo is a bunch of ex-Square, ex-Sega, and ex-Konami developers - infact - some of the very cream of the crop.

For X360 and PC. Never got the promised enhanced PS3 port.

It's like Type-0 for US or any other game that was announced and mentioned to be close to fruition then quietly shelved. Except on a whole 'nother level.

They should go ahead and put it out.

Given how the retail sales / pts ratio is working right now (just look at titles like MH4, or the just released One Piece: it had less than half the pts of Unlimited Cruise SP...it debuted better, and with a much higher ratio even if bundles aren't counted), I can see Mirai 2 being on par with Mirai 1, Toriko Survival debuting much better than Battle and AC4 not selling 0.5AC3.

For Mirai 2, I see the following pro's and con's:

Cons:
-Mirai has much lower production values than Diva F. Since Diva F has come out and sold a lot, Mirai is now has a bit of a below standard/b-tier status, whereas before Diva F came out, it was largely on-par with what the series did.
-Diva F 2 is coming out in the Spring on both PS3 and Vita, and has had a lengthy trailer showing off a very flashy game (for this genre), so there are a lot more potential customers who know they can just wait 4-6 months and get the high end product without having to buy a new platform like the Vita.
-There are a lot more 3DS games out than when Mirai 1 came out, so if someone wants to buy a 3DS game that's to their liking, they have a lot of choices to spend their money on.

Pros:
-Mirai 2 includes all of Mirai 1's content to my knowledge, so it does offer a value proposition that's better than Mirai 1.
-There are obviously a lot more 3DS owners than last time around.

Personally I expect it to be at least somewhat down.

With Assassin's Creed 4, I expect it to be down on the basis that if the PS4 appeals to anyone in Japan, it presumably appeals to Western game fans the most. As such, seeing a fair number of them wait until the PS4 is out wouldn't be tremendously shocking, especially since they're generally not a huge audience.

For Toriko, given what the anime is, I have to imagine the game is going to sell primarily to kids. As such, I suspect pre-orders aren't a great correlation to final performance.

I just hope like I said many times that this will no stop them from trying again something different with the brand without relying only on AAAAAAAA+ titles or CCCCCCC- 3ds/iOS ones.

pssssh I wish Squeenix made more 3DS games (that actually get localized)

I can't keep playing TRFF forever.

I think week 46 was the first without any Wii game in the Media Create top 50. This week there's none again. (Taiko may reappear during the holidays.) 363 weeks, almost 7 years.

It happened with the DS a few weeks ago.. 462 weeks, ~8.8 years.

I'm not sure if PSP has ever missed a week yet.

Wait Vita sold less software this year than the psp, how? how.... I thought the psp was mostly dead this year software wise.

That tell us more about Vita's terrible performance than PSP's, which isn't dead yet, but it's on its way out. We have just lowered the bar with each new disappointment that, when Vita shows a pulse, we act surprised.

I think the biggest reason why 4's sales would be down would have to do with the fact that 3 was a really terrible game.

Lol at Last Remnant PS3 and Last Guardian PS3.

There's only two non-Playstation platform games in the top ten though, wow would've thought more 3DS would be there I guess.

But Azalyn also said pre-orders for Mirai 2 were 30% less than the first entry. So, the same on COMG.
Anyway, Christmas can help the game.

Dragon Quest Monsters is the only big title I can think of thats coming out on 3DS that has been announced so far. What else is there?

Oh yeah forgot about that.
It's going to be the year of the pink one. How darest thou forget;-)

On a serious note - I'm intrigued how Toriko will sell. Some awful awful framerate, collision detection and camera but other than that (!) far Monster Hunter-y than Unlimited World R.

What were the 1st days of the previous Toriko games?

What were the 1st days of the previous Toriko games?
Last one sold 13k first week, I thought it was like 40k, maybe the first one.

Edit: yep first one sold 43k.

Actually I was referring to the 1st day percentage. :p
Oh ok.

First one was ~20%
Second one was ~30%

This game is a continuation of the PSP series, so maybe this will sell like the first one? We'll see if the previous game was the exception rather than the rule.
