Who would all import and save a lot of money instead of buying nationally.

Pretty much.

If you are rich enough to buy a $4000 reais electronic device, you are certainly rich enough to go on vacation to the US and bring one with you.

Also if you are that rich, it's because you or your family aren't dumb about how to save money.

WOuld you pay $2000 for a PS4? I wouldn't, and, for what it looks like, neither will the Brazilians.

I'll go to Brasil and purchase a PS4!
I went there earlier this year and did some gaming shopping as well. It wasn't that expensive but it seemed like they'd sell mostly US stuff. Thought they also sold Japanese games and collectors editions that were sold out everywhere else. Ended up buying only a laser pointer instead, though.

While the Wii U is US$ 100 cheaper than the PS4 in the US, Nintendo's console is US$ 900 cheaper in Brazil. Both are imported.

You tell me.

There is no reason whatsoever to buy a PS4 here, unless you have enough money to through it out the window. Its way easier and cheaper to go to the US or even Paraguay/Argentina/Chile and buy one there.

I thought Brazilian gamers were importing PS4s to get around the inflated taxation. They're probably playing PS4 by these means and ignoring the screwed up domestic priced units.

Insanely high taxes for foreign goods. ~_~

Thanks to Platy for posting this.

PS4's BRL price is R$ 858.00.
That's $394.85 in USD. (cheaper than NA)

Sony Brazil's profit margin on that is R$ 257.00 (118.27 USD)
They remove that profit margin as a "discount" to keep costs down.

But the tax adds on R$ 2,524.00 ($1161.53 USD) On top of the base price and retailer markup.

I know it's a ridiculous price (for whatever reason), but you'd have to be a ******* idiot to think "0" consoles have been sold.

Oh so it's almost like Vita then.
The only games for sale in Brazil are those that launched with the system, and they cost around 100 dollars. I've never seen a new game anywhere. So much for trying to buy Killzone here.

Is it to be believed that the reason for the price is Brazil's import taxes and fees? Not Sony's decision?

Brazil has, I think, like a 100% import tax on electronics, and I think maybe some other fees as well?

I know a guy who regularly takes Apple products down there and sells for approximately twice the price he paid. He said he thinks he should be selling the PS4 he ordered for ~$1500-$2000 easily.

Yes. People believe it is only because of taxes and "backwards government" that the price is that high. Sony threw a PR ball with tables and numbers included and people caught it.

Now just sit back and watch the price collapse in a few months (without the need of a tax reform).

I figured at least a few crazy rich people would buy one, unless the "zero sales" thing is hyperbole.

Brazil doesn't have their version of a whackjob who need to be the first to purchase a new version of an electronic in their respective country or the world?

People always buy in the gray market, because dont unofficial import dont pay the ridiculous taxes.

But the bad part of Sony putting a price so high is that that influences the gray market prices too. Being much more disproportionately higher for a $400 PS4 hardware than is for the $300 PS3.

Big part of oficial PS4 price is because of taxes. But Sony Brazil dont helped making the calculation in the worst possible way. For example, they put the markup in the beginning, and all the cascaded taxes multiply a higher initial price number.

it does. But these people already flew to Miami and bought the PS4 there.

Well there has to be some logical reason for the high price. They want to sell units.

A logical reason is that they know that with Brazil's tax, even the lowest price they could go would still not matter against the power of Grayskull. (imports in grey market)

So instead of trying to push consumers into buying an official product through other factors, they're focusing on maximizing their margins from the 1% who are willing to spend that amount, while they let grey imports flood the market.

I think it costs 2999 reais in the grey market. Like, wtf. Awful.

Insanely high taxes for foreign goods. Sony lowered the base price as much as they could, but tax on tax on tax added up....

I really don't think so, since as quoted above, the Wii U official price is much, much lower, insane taxes and all.

Either Sony is lying through their teeth, or they have ridiculous levels of burocracy so huge and incompetent when distributing their products in Brazil they end up with such insane extra costs.

Meanwhile, people are flipping the PS4 for around €1000 and people get tramped by stampedes of eager buyers in Europe.

Didn't someone in one of the earlier Brazil PS4 threads mention that their government requires a markup of some percentage, and that taxes are then based on the wholesale price plus that markup, even if the retailer doesn't take the markup? It's just another way to boost how much is taken in tax.

The PS3 is locally manufactured or at least assembled, the PS4 isn't. It's the reason MS managed to price the X1 around $930 (R$ 2199), which is far from the $499 but still within the expected price after taxes and whatnot.

Not that it justifies the price Sony is asking, though. Some people preordered it from Amazon (that charges you all the 60%+ required taxes on the cart) and it ended up over three times cheaper.
