Attention new & prospective Wii U owners who didn't own a Wii...

...like myself, get a Wiimote & nunchuck NOW because the Wii back log is AMAZING!!! In this lackluster first year of the Wii U, I have had a great time catching up on all the great games the original Wii had to offer. By the time I'm done catching up, the Wii U catalog should be pretty damn healthy.

All the Nintendo first party titles are obviously great like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc., but it's the third party stuff where you will find a surprising amount of gems. From great RPGs to rail shooters to quirky titles. As the only "next gen" console with backwards compatibility, you owe it to yourself to pick up the few great Wii U games that are currently available and then doing some research on the Wii games that might interest you. It's made my reluctant purchase of the Wii U feel like the steal of the century. Old and new titles plus VC and indies. Good times my friends, good times.

What kind of gamer didn't have a Wii at all during the 7th Generation, I wonder. That Wii backlog will blow your mind and keep you fed during droughts.

And people act like backwards compatibility is no big deal.

Not everyone plays every game on every system. And in the case of the Wii, there are very many hidden gems.

If you own a Wii U and hit a software drought then just go back to the Wii library. You can find plenty of titles for relatively cheap, too.

Listing is pointless. Someone dig up the Wii game recommendation thread. I forget what it was called.

Yeah I have a ton of Wii games. Investing in a set of last gen controllers is totally worth it for the U. Never got why people kept banging on and on about it not having any games, maybe not any AAA games or whatever, but it had a lot of cool stuff on it. One of my biggest bummers about the Wii U is that it doesn't seem to be getting those same kind of mid-tier, quirky games :(

If you like RPGs, I really recommend The Last Story.

Lost in Shadow is a quirky and fun platformer/puzzle game.

And there are some good WiiWare games, if you are will to over-look the now over-priced games. Like Liights, great music themed puzzle game set to light physics.

I'll look at my retail collection to see what to recommend.

Outside of Nintendo the Wii is really not a home for AAA titles. But it has its own little thing and the library is quite awesome. The system didn't reach its full potential, but when all is said and done I really had a great time with the system.

  • Well, for my desires, the game of highest interest would be MS Anthology, and unfortunately the Wii version is nullified by input lag. Everything else is stuff that I can find on other systems or don't care about. Oh, and you didn't even list Milestone Shooter Collection or Shikigami Shiro 3. Oh, and you missed a chance to pimp Sin and Punishment 2? Huh, how strange.

But hey, I asked and you answered. Cool.

Boy if there was ever a fucking tag worth quoting.

Rail/light gun shooters like House of Dead, Resident Evil, Dead Space have a been nice surprise and super fun with friends. Some cool action and adventure titles like De Blob, Klonoa, Lost in Shadow, Rabbids, A Boy and his Blob, Mad World, Silent Hill, etc. You really just need to research and ask around.

The Wii had an amazing third party catalog. Just because they weren't AAA games for the most part doesn't mean they weren't great.

See the list above, plus all these:

Bit.Trip Complete, Castle of Shikigami III, The Conduit, de Blob, Dead Space: Extraction, Dragon Quest Swords, Elebits, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungen, Fragile Dreams, Ghost Squad, Go Vacation, Harvest Moon: Animal Parade, Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility, House of the Dead Overkill, Monster Hunter Tri, Okami, Phantom Brave, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Rabbids Go Home, Rayman Origins, Red Steel 2, Resident Evil 0, 1, and 4 (also The Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles), Rune Factory Frontier, Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Sonic Colors, Trauma Center

A Boy & His Blob
Dewy's Adventure
Ivy the Kiwi?
Klonoa
Last Story
Little King's Story
Lost in Shadow
Muramasa The Demon Blade
No More Heroes
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
Pandora's Tower
Zack & Wiki - Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy
Boom Blox
Data East Arcade Classics
Deadly Creatures
Kororinpa: Marble Mania
Let's Tap
Marble Saga: Kororinpa
Metal Slug Anthology
Opoona
Samurai Shodown Anthology
SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom All Stars

I actually own every game on that list except the first Koririnpa and Ivy the Kiwi.

Anyway the Wii has quite the interesting 3rd-party library though a lot of it is, like anything, is YMMW. Some of my favorite rough games are Crystal Bearers and Fragile Dreams (my all-time favorite game). There are quite a lot of other games I enjoyed but then again it's up to you whether they're stuff that will interest you.

Get Red Steel 2. It's not a fantastic game, but it's mechanics are interesting enough to keep you entertained for a good while.

The end result would be the same if I were to take the time to give an impression of each one, which would ultimately reiterate what I had said in summation regardless. The chase is cut. I say what I feel, people feel good about referring to my tag, and the thread moves on.

At least now instead of an OP which only gives a vague reference to "dem 3rd party games!!!", we now have a list of some kind which has already fostered other discussion.

Win win, right?

It doesn't have many AAA blockbuster titles, but it has loads of interesting, quality and unique games. Far more fun than sticking to acti/ubi/ea/bethesda aaa games in my opinion.

It's interesting that you listed video games, but I don't play video games so your list sucks. But it's cool that you tried and everything.

Actually it is considered the best version.

Everything else is stuff that I can find on other systems or don't care about.

Then I guess you kinda suck, don't you? But honestly no one cares if you are interested in those games or not, those who have played them know most of the ones I listed are quite good.

Oh, and you didn't even list Milestone Shooter Collection or Shikigami Shiro 3. Oh, and you missed a chance to pimp Sin and Punishment 2? Huh, how strange.

Sin & P2 is a Nintendo IP, you wanted to know of 3rd party games.

i mean...those are the lists after the entire console lifespan, which is absolutely pathetic.

but it's a nice list if you never played any of those. when the system was alive, those games were all spread out and it felt barren

Yeah it's pretty solid, though a lot of the really good ones like Little King's Story and Murasama have ports now. Seriously LKS was one of my favorite games of that year. Xenoblade was also pretty fantastic though that's a Nintendo game aka not third party.

Yeah, the Wii suffered from terrible (and I mean downright abysmal) draughts throughout its life. It's no wonder the lists are so small.

There are so many different wonderful games of so many different genres, and you can't really find anything interesting?

And did you really need a list? Im guessing you're more than familiar with what games came out for Wii and refuse to admit the plethora of quality games because herp derp Nintendo. Sad.

That list doesn't include any Nintendo published games, which would almost double the number of games I could list.

So... two out of that list constitutes "a lot of them"? Besides, LKS on Vita was butchered when they changed the art style. No thanks.

Those are a small sample of games. Jesus. I don't even see Nintendo games on the list.

I don't think we want to disregard the great Nintendo first party titles because those alone are enough to own a Wii but what I've learned over the last year was just how good the third party offerings were. Better late than never I guess but I'm disappointed I didn't give the Wii more respect.

That's the spirit, dude!

OP, you should mention that it is preferable to get a wiimote plus as Wii U games that support the wiimote expect to have the motion plus. Quite a few users had the bad surprise trying to play Wii Sports Club.

Ok then, the games I think are good that are third-party (most of them being exclusive):

A Boy and his Blob
Bit.Trip series
Boom Blox and it's sequel
de Blob
Epic Mickey (debatable, but I actually really enjoyed this one personally)
Fatal Frame IV (get the patch!)
House of the Dead: OVERKILL
Klonoa remake
Little King's Story
MadWorld
Monster Hunter 3
Murasama
No More Heroes 1 and 2
Red Steel 2 (1 sucks)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Sonic Colors
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Trauma Center series
Zack & Wiki

DIdn't care for Wii "classics" like the Conduit, the Resident Evil shooter games (though the 4 port was really awesome), and Lost in Shadow but there's differing opinions on them.

is it worth getting the wii remote plus? I picked up a pre-owned wiimote from GameStop's BF sale since it was only $10 and got a nunchuck as well

Wii was a badass system indeed! For fans of on-rails shooters in particular.
House of the Dead: Overkill
Ghost Squad
Resident Evil: Darkside chronicle and the other one
Dead Space: Extraction

Fun on a bun, one and all.

Plus things like the first-party catalog, Okami, RE4 wii edition, the list really does go on and on. Hell, I keep meaning to pick up Cursed Mountain and Shattered Memories, myself.

Hi. I played IIDX for 70 minutes today and Densha De Go Final PS2 during my morning hour workout routine. You don't play video games at all? Hm.

Yes.

No.

Actually it is considered the best version.
Actually, I did make a mistake. I thought the Wii version had worse lag but it doesn't. The Wii version's flaw is the lack of classic controller support. That's unfortunate but tolerable. But the end result is that either version of Anthology has some kind of issue.
Then I guess you kinda suck, don't you?
Sick burn.
Sin & P2 is a Nintendo IP, you wanted to know of 3rd party games.
Hah, I should try this in a future "Treasure is so awesome" thread. Guys, you can't mention S&P2, it's not their IP. I'm sure that'll go over well.
But honestly no one cares if you are interested in those games or not, those who have played them know most of the ones I listed are quite good.
Well, the main reason that I bothered to do so was that it dovetailed nicely with the other post I quoted. I felt that it helped give an explanation.

But otherwise, yeah, you're right, nobody cares and I suck and all that, so that should wrap things up here.

Wii is a really cool console fo'sho. Has a lot of the sort of rad mid-budget games that I gravitate a lot towards. Out of the systems I own, my Wii library is one of the biggest, but I still feel like there's a ton of cool titles I need to get.

Really high quality big name first party titles, excellent underlooked first party titles, really interesting library of smaller third party titles, neat import library... Wii really covers a lot of fronts (except big name third party games, but I'm sure you didn't need to be told that).

There were a few Wii games I never got around to trying out. Klonoa, Fatal Frame 4, and Pandora's Tower come to mind.

Well, at least you double-checked the Metal Slug thing, so you suck a little less. But still, how you can have no interest in Little King Story? Amazing game.

I would like to say that Dewy's Adventure sucks but Chocobo's Dungeon and Shiren do not.

Wha? Dewy's was so unfairly reviewed at the time. People complained the controls were too slippery... well, duh... that was kind of the point. It has gorgeous graphics, an arcadey sound track, and has some very interesting and unique game play / level designs. What's not to like?

If you haven't played Klonoa on PS1 than the Wii version is def worth checking out. It's one of my favorite platformers.

For Wii games, very few supported it, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Wii Sports Resort and Red Steel 2 being the most prominent games that uses it. Like I said in my other post, Wii U games expect the motion plus. While the regular wiimote might be supported on some games, it will not be usable in others.

Also, IMO wii remote plus >>> wii remote + motion plus, if that's what you had in mind.

My reaction when people play wii games outside of dolphin

Wii had an incredible library, lots of hidden gems outside the great first party stuff

I never played Dewy's Adventure, but it does look like a charming little game. It was just one of those obscure titles I overlooked along with Klonoa remake.

Haha you'll never see this coming, but I thought it controlled too poorly. Kororinpa was cool, though, and I even kind of liked the Super Monkey Ball for the Wii, so it's not that I have a rolling bias.

Also, anyone who liked LKS should check out Chulip on the PS2. The mechanics are a little weak but it's bizarre and full of Kimura charm.
