Media Create Sales: Week 49, 2013 (Dec 02 - Dec 08)

Nice to see the Wii U improving...but another high profile release was really needed for late December.

They really could have done with a Mario Party for Wii U. I never understood why they slowed that franchise... as the yearly release on the Gamecube always did decent business (Wii Party just never has the same appeal IMO).

Nice presence for Wii U this week. 3D World finally showing some legs. I wonder if 3DS YTD can best 2012? It's not looking likely at this point. May hit just under 5m this year in Japan. I still don't believe 3DS has peaked yet, in any region. At any rate, no doubt Nintendo is enjoying what is looking like a decent Wii U performance this holiday, even though I'm sure they would like to have seen a little more.

DQX is an expansion, so not a system seller in itself, unless the first one charts too (or it has some incredible digital sales).

It is the holiday effect on Wii U but I think it's not only that, why it isn't the same effect on 3ds?

Still I think it will go back to 20k numbers.

I see you guys are getting out from your covers, NPD is coming take care.

Someone is salty.

ALBW likely won't do much, and PDZ is a bit of a wild card still. Speaking of which, anybody know the initial shipment for PADZ?

ALBW will still do better than the 3DS releases last holiday I imagine, same with PDZ, so I'm hoping to see a strong boost around those releases.

I like that you felt the need to post this in both Media Create threads...

Why are you getting so worked up over good Wii U numbers?

Can you really blame if some Wii U owner on GAF is happy about 1 week good unexpected sales? with all the doom&gloom (justified, by some sort) around?
C'mon: there is a little hope that N will support it through 2015 at least, let's rejoice, nobodyìs gonna hurt by it

How is the Bravely Default sequel sales? Looks pretty terrible right?

that's just the "update", and for previous owners there is a cheaper DD one to get. These are probably 35K new consumer that now know the brand and probably will want the sequel

Chill man. I'm just happy that there might be a light in the tunnel for the Wii U. Because for the moment - mine is powered down since... well, long.

I'm not at all surprised. I told people it needed to be a PS4 launch title. Sony really blew a golden opportunity by putting it exclusively on PS3.

It could be put head to head with Forza 5, and makes it the one of the best launch title in history. But no, they must put two GT games for each generation.

Dunno why everyone are surprised about Wii U numbers. It's very known that Nintendo console s always do very well at the end of the year.

Really? Even with titles like PDZ and Zelda coming out? That's too bad.

Total 3DS sales in 2012:

5,497,737

Current YTD for 2013:

4.266.181

The difference is 1.23m and there are just 3 weeks left for the year, it would require average sales of over 400k per week, which is more than 275k higher than this week. Last year the 3DS sold 200k for the same week.

2012 may have been the peak year for 3DS, I expected it to be this year given the strength of the titles it received. It should still get to 5m though which is a good achievement.

Maybe it's worth to mention that Monster hunter 4 has reached 3 million copies according to Media-Create, so that should be only retail sales.

16./26. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2012.11.08} (¥4.800) - 15.039 / 3.496.578
17./24. [3DS] Friend Collection: New Life # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2013.04.18} (¥4.800) - 12.816 / 1.523.528

Also some comebacks as it should be expected in this period.
Speaking of which, Animal crossing seemed such a juggernaut last year, now Pokemon and MH4 are almost there already.

We are talking about the Wii U here

The Wii U - check previous MCS threads and look at the misery that is the Wii U, than you might understand people's reactions

Oh come on, SCEA has no interest in the Vita. What made you think they'd want to push a glorified offshoot of it?

SCEA might not care about Vita, but they care about PS4, and right now Vita TV is an excellent accessory for that console, besides providing cheap access to a few Vita-compatible games that PS plus users might have.

I'm surprised at GT6 given how low the UK numbers were. Makes me think the PS4 launch did affect it to an extent.

Little bit OTT there.

Seems it really was the wrong move not to get GT6 on PS4.

Can we expect that to happen if it also doesn't sell as expected in the west? Or will Sony just move on to GT7 in a couple of years?

Great numbers for Wii U, but it still feels funny knowing that Iwata says it'll sell 9 million (worldwide, but still) by April.

I think Iwata will say something along the lines of "....9million would have happened but we had to delay key software (MK8/SSB),but as you can see 3D World gave the system a bump and it would have further grown had we been able to release key software...please understand.."

Do we have a list of ''relevant'' releases for Vita after FFX/X2 hits? As in is January a graveyard?

Is DK confirmed for Feb release in Japan? Anything coming out besides that?

Oh it is. Unless you expect P&D Z to push the 3DS harder than the 2011 holiday sales.
It was a fun ride though. I should've just stuck with my 'it will decline YoY' from the start.

I think it's bad news given the ammunition they've fired this year. It'll be very interesting to watch next year unfold.

Absolutely. I've bought every GT game and nearly skipped over GT6 because I couldn't play it on my shiny new console. I'll double-dip if they do bring it over to PS4.

The post above mine the in other thread was a linking post to this one. I am on GAF to be part of the discussion, so I wanted to include what I had to say in the active discussion. I don't think it's that unusual. In fact, I've seen it happen many times.

Am I worked up? No. Am I pleased there may actually be a decent holiday bump when I was doubting there would be one? Sure.

Was vita TV stock low from the start or are sales really that bad?

Also really nice bump for Wii U. I honestly only really expected it to hold about the same as it did last week with a minor bump. Also 3D World is showing some legs this week.

GT6 also sold better than I thought it would but considering no PS4 in Japan yet I guess I should of expected as much.

Also I see Nintendo Pacman is in full effect again.

Telling people to fuck off if they say this isn't entirely unexpected isn't rejoicing.

My relatively pessimistic expectation of what would be a reasonable 4 week total for December was 200K. It's on its way to meeting that, perhaps exceeding it - we'll see.

People like schuelma, iirc, said that would be the minimum to expect, noting the GCN did better it's second holiday. Others may have been similarly pessimistic or optimistic, ergo I don't know why it comes as surprise that this may not be beyond expectation as yet.

It doesn't change that it's a good number.
what I had to say in the active discussion
Again, saying fuck you to people generally isn't part of pleasant discussion. It just seems unnecessarily aggressive... :/

I thought it contained the base game + expansion, I was wrong. Still I think it will go back to 20k numbers.

Serious question: do you enjoy Wii U low nombers?

Dunno why everyone are surprised about Wii U numbers. It's very known that Nintendo console s always do very well at the end of the year.

yes, but it's not that Mario came out months ago. And did have lower effects on the HW sales than this DQX expension pack. Nobody was expecting Wii U numbers to see this bump, and it's actually the only console having seen a consistent bump this week, so...yes, there are people genuinely surprised by this (single week) good performance

Btw, calm down: Wii U is going nowhere. let's just people (interested in it) hope to see it not being discontinued in 2014 ;)

Yeah, this was probably their biggest year in releases with MH4 and Pokemon, yet the console is down YoY. I think at this point is fair to assume that the portable market is just not there at it was with the DS and is going to be worst from now on.

Without the heavyhitters it will be nice to see 3DS evolution in 2014.

Serious question: do you enjoy Wii U low nombers?

I enjoy see people being down and in denial over the Wii U low numbers. Not these week numbers, but more in general.

Is kind of hilarious watching it from the sidelines.

It's preordering higher than Animal crossing currently (yep that right). Though we'll see what effects it'll have on sales.

That's based on Comgnet numbers so I wouldn't go so far ;) Anyway, we should be hoping for 5m YTD IMO.

I think next year will show people how incredible 2013 actually has been for the 3DS, regardless of its slight drop YoY because 2014 is going to be a steep drop. It's really all relative. Back in the day when the DSLite didn't hit 100k+ in a normal sales week people acted like it was in trouble.

That's pointing out the obvious, dude. But that was also true for the DS. 2007 -> 2008 was a major drop (I'm not even sure 3DS will drop as badly as DS did). It's a normal sales curve for systems that sell as highly initially as DS/3DS did.

I'm not saying it's likely, but I don't think 400k average over the next 3 weeks is outside the realm of possibility either. The only major releases over the remaining 3 weeks last year were Inazuma 11 and Fantasy Life. I'd like to believe it's possible that ALBW and PDZ will give the 3DS a stronger next 3 weeks, but maybe I am overestimating the popularity of those games.

December will be a good month for Wii U. I'm afraid January will be horrible though, unless word of mouth spreads about how awesome 3D World is.

To me Wii U is a completely failure, sales wise. And I'm not expecting it neither to match those numbers nor to match GC LTD sales.

Just to clarify my position on it, sales wise.

I just find incredibly odd to see people rejoyce about it failure :)

Said by one of the non-vita owners that has always seen the chance for that hw to gain mmentum in the JP market back in the days ;)

Indeed. Interestingly, all the lackluster launch complaints would have become null and void, making the new system look even more enticing, if that were at all possible. Japan most of all would've benefitted, since consumers would actually have a reason to buy a PS4 next year.

That is only at Comgnet though, which counts for 19 stores across whole Japan, if i remember correctly. Hard to say how it is in Japan in general. But Puzzle & Dragons is one of the biggest IPs in Japan right now, so i will be very surprised if it dont sell well.

I think the Wii U has a stronger first 2 quarters next year in terms of software than it did this year though. So while January will probably be poor, I'm hoping for a stronger baseline.

WiiU had a big bump. Will be interesting to see how this trend continues over the coming weeks and into 2014. This is certainly better than it had been doing, but now we have to see if the momentum means a new, higher post-holiday baseline or it collapses again.

The irony is you felt the need to answer twice to him in both threads ;)
Congrats on the (fitting) tag! ;p
