As a longtime Nintendo fan, I probably shouldn't be enjoying this so much... but sometimes you just want to watch it all burn.

Why though? WiiU is 20x more appealing to me than the Wii was. It's really sad to see a console with an actual controller get punished like this.

The Wii should have been hammered like this, not the WiiU.

So...what now, Nintendo.

This is the million dollar question. I'm quite interested in Iwata's plan, assuming he is still CEO, for the future of Nintendo's home console buisness especially after this abysmal holiday. Their handheld business will remain healthy and still be a profit generator for the foreseeable future even if it's not lighting the world on fire.

Someone edit this gif put in the grim reaper over Richitello. Actually, scratch that, John works well as grim reaper.

Yep the entire board of Nintendo needs to be burned to the ground for how horrible they have handled everything. Hopefully the people defending all of their choices wake up and realize how fucked they are. I just hope the mobile people don't win out over there.

LOL, right. Nintendo said 9 million by March. What are they smoking?

WiiU is at like 4 million right now, right? They would have to sell a million a month just to reach that, right?

9 million shipped THIS fisical year. They've shipped around 0.5 million so far. I'm not making that up... :/

I think Pachter predicted 6 million. They're not going to come close to that either.

Nintendo won't recover by dropping the price and gamepad and bundling Mario.

There's a core perception that the Nintendo brand is broken. Their service problems are only the symptoms of a systemic organizational illness. They can continue to chant and shake their magic stick at the sky all they want but until they get serious about tackling their problems they'll continue backsliding into irrelevance.

Damn shame.

You know, everyone is talking about how bad the Wii U is doing, but the bigger alarm bells is how the 3DS/2DS is flat even with the huge software push and aggressive pricing strategy.

Nintendo has issues because its home console market is doing bad, but it also has its handheld consoles being under assault from smartphones and tablets and it is taking a HUGE toll on the console. In November, it SHOULD be selling gangbusters with a cheap price and Poemon X/Y, but it is not.

That should just be just as disconcerting, especially for the people who want Nintendo to have ONE console to support that is a plug in handheld console that can hook up to the TV.

Yeah THIS concerns me far more than the Wii U. The 3DS not even hitting a million when they had Pokemon + Zelda + a 99$ price point 2DS is terrifying.

Code:
Hardware LTD Mario 3D Sales Attach Ratio

GCN 2.120.000 350.000 [B]16.5%[/B]
Wii 6.000.000 1.120.000 [B]18.7%[/B]
Wii U ~ 1.550.000 215.000 [B]13.9%[/B]
LOL Fixed your dodgy maths.

You mean it doesn't have the highest attach ratio? Holy shit!

Option three, sort of an option 1 plus. Drop it to 199, bundle a few games, include codes for shit on the E shop, and drop it when MK or Smash drops.

They can't. The tablet is what makes the system's price totally inelastic. They can't drop it again without causing even deeper losses.

The tablet IS part of the problem. The market is saturated by tablets - they are everywhere, so people don't give a fuck to the system. Getting rid of it means getting rid of two problems at the same time. it will not make the system sell like crazy, but it will at least target the casual that aren't willingly to spend much money on games.

Nintendo is by far the most interesting company in gaming right now because of this. It would be amazing to be a fly on the wall in their meetings over the next 6 months.

Kind of interested to see Reggie's next interview. The guy has been pounding his fist about "Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong" since E3.

The difference between the Dreamcast and the Wii U is that Sega ran out of money with the Dreamcast. Literally. They lost $400 million in 2000 and simply could no longer support the Dreamcast without facing the possibility of defaulting on their debt.

Pachter has noted that Nintendo could continue with its current level of sales and fiscal performance for another 10 years without seeing any major management or structural changes due to its large cash reserves.

Been a Nintendo fan ever since I first laid hands on a Game Boy with Wario Land back in 1993 or so. It speaks volumes that I'm not only unsurprised by the Wii U sales figures, but that I'm not bothered by them either.

In a way, the failure of the Wii U needs to happen in order to give Nintendo the kick up the arse they need.

And a failure it is. Within a few months, the Wii U will essentially not exist here in the UK.

I think these results just confirm that Nintendo is prepping for a big Nintendo Direct announcement from Iwata stating that the Wii U will now be sold separately from the GamePad.

Something like:

Wii U console + Wii Remote Plus: $159
GamePad + Nintendo Land: $89

And maybe they'll update the eShop to be operatable by Wii Remote.

Edit: this post was sent to die, at bottom of NPD thread page... Like Wii U lol

I still remember that Nintendo Direct with the FExSMT and X announcements when it seemed like Nintendo would turn it all around...

The main two games I'm looking forward to playing on mine if I remember, along with Bayonetta 2. Especially X.

LOL.

I really hope X is as good as I expect it to be from that team, Takahashi, and that great teaser trailer.

On one hand, Nintendo totally deserves these sales for their half-assed "we'll catch lightning in a bottle one more time!" approach, their ridiculous pricing, over reliance on Mario, and outdated policies in terms of features.

On the other hand, I'm afraid of the consequences and how they will react.

You shouldn't have to buy mediocre and rather expensive HW just for one or more games. I'll never understand what exclusivity does to a game that makes it so much better than any other.

If you're not buying new hardware for good games, why buy any console at all? A high end PC will always outperform the latest consoles.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
People buying hardware to just look at it and not play games on it confirmed.

Software way down while hardware way up. LoLoLoL

The general public is crazy.
