Which game's fanbase has been treated the worst?

being a Yazakua and FF fan in recent years has been suffering.

Yakuza - no Kenzan, HD collections, 5, PSP games and no Isshin. The future of localization look dim.

FF - a whole generation of XIII games and if you're not a fan of those the only other option is a MMO. The one FF game that did look exceptional (Versus/XV) is still yet to be released 7 years after it was announced. The other FF game that got glowing reception (Type-0) never got localized.

I'm not even a Breath of Fire fan....

But this was painful to watch. I feel for you... =(

But no one I know in development has ever looked at their project and gone, "How can I ruin this for all the fans?"

Maybe not, but when you look at the Megaman situation... you start to wonder.
Megaman in SFxTK being a prime example, huge slap in the face at the time.

would definitely have to say megaman's. Good to see him in Smash Bros and in his (spiritual) successor Mighty No. 9. But horrible treatment from Capcom themselves

Care to elaborate on this so called "lol"-worthy concept at all?

Not sure what you're asking for? I think fans being betrayed is a nutty concept that has no real foundation. Moreover, it's an erroneous interpretation of the relationship between developers and fans, and is wholly dependent on the notion that developers ought to be void of personal desires and interests that their "fans" (more like abusive partners but whatever) wouldn't accept.

It's immature, ignorant, hypocritical, and provides nothing of value to developers.

I'd say Final Fantasy XIII was a pretty damn big betrayal.

Not it wasn't. What a silly opinion. XIII is about as worthy of the FF name as any other, and a logical extension of what X and X-2 introduced in matters world and combat design. Its faults were the result of incompetency. How is that in any way an act of betrayal? It isn't.

Jesus fuck, do people think all other FF games were pure, unadulterated works of perfection? Jeez.

Phantasy Star. We get Phantasy Online, Phantasy Star Universe, Phantasy Star Zero, Phantasy Star everything EXCEPT A GOD DAMNED PHANTASY STAR V.

A photoshop isn't going to break the cycle. I haven't had a Sonic game I enjoyed since, what, 1997?

EDIT: 1994* yikes! Twenty years.

I haven't had a Sonic I enjoyed since thirty minutes ago. Lost World is pretty great. Sonic Generations was my absolute favor Sonic game in the entire series.

I agree with this (even though I'm playing along)

A thousand times yes.

Also:

Shining Force.

We get these Shining Force Soul Neo Exa Feather garbage games, everything except Shining Force 4, or a localized HD remake of Shining Force 3 trilogy. Bah.

And, of course, Panzer Dragoon. Dead franchise is dead, huh? Crison Dragon is the closest thing to a Panzer game and by all accounts it's mediocre at best and riddled with IAP bullshit. Fuck.

But I say the winner is... Legacy of Kain. No explanation required, I think.

Off the charts presentation and a unique and engaging battle system count as a betrayal? I'm of the opinion that Final Fantasy and DMC fans are treating their franchises badly, not the other way around. The recent entries have been different, and they're not perfect, but they're not without their merits and still probably better than most entries in their respective genres.

On topic: Metroid.

But DmC is awesome..

And Presentation was the ONLY thing XIII had going for it IMO. If you call mashing X (or A for you 360 lovers) and periodically changing a paradigm "Engaging", then this ride is going to slow for me.

Hell, even FF XII did it right when it came to lack of control in it's battle system. It was less about picking turns with various commands, and simply managing the situation. XIII's was just plain bad. I wanted to love it, I really did. But once I put in the 3rd disc, and realized how genuinely disgusted I was with the previous 2 discs, it was time to call it quits.

The horrible story, the hate-worthy characters, the shameful linearity, the lack of item/weapon management and complexity, etc, KILLED the experience for me.

I will give XIII-2 credit, that it seems to address some of these problems, and was a bit more enjoyable. But I keep the opinion that XIII-2 was a waste of time and money that could have gone in the direction of another, BETTER Final Fantasy entry.

Except X and X-2 did it better. So why make a worse version of that? X has arguable the BEST battle system because it was a thinker. Strategy, looking ahead, and character/summon management were all part of the package. Why is it logical to mess all that up?

And yes. Yes I do.

-Sonic-

Should of been first post.

No other fanbase even comes close.

Sonic's fanbase gets a never ending stream of bungled, mediocre games. But in Sega's own sad little incompetent way, it can't be said they aren't trying. Meanwhile, Capcom just asks as politely as they can to Megaman's fans to please shut the fuck up and go away.
Inafune's like "I'll make a megaman game real cheap for you guys, please? I'll even use kickstarter!',
and Capcom's like "Fuck right off the end of my dick, please." That's true abuse, people.

Though, as for a fanbase that isn't being proactively attacked by it's owners[as in, actually trying to be maintained, and not actively destroyed]... gonna go with Activision and COD. Activision has about as much love for their fanbase as a Tapeworm has for it's host... all they do is sit around thinking up new ways to pull a dime out of it's fans. Seems to be the only real innovation in that series as it goes on.

Old-time Sega fans in general. Good franchises that haven't been the same like Sonic, Shining Force, Nights etc..Franchises that have been ignored like Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star (the online games are good, but not the same), Dragonforce, Shenmue etc..

I haven't had a Sonic I enjoyed since thirty minutes ago. Lost World is pretty great. Sonic Generations was my absolute favor Sonic game in the entire series.

Yikes. Closest I've gotten is Sonic Rush? The first one for the DS. Still wasn't amazing, but it was the most complete game I've played in the series in a long time.

Nintendo doesn't treat Punch Out!! and Kid Icarus fans too well. They both got sequels somewhat recently but they are most likely destined to return to Nintendo's attic.

Got to be Mega Man. It's like breaking the news of a family member's death to someone, calling later to tell them they're actually okay and it was a case of mistaken identity, then calling back again to say "JUST KIDDING!".

Fans of outright retired or dropped series are treated better.

And yet so many want Nintendo to follow their lead. :lol

Typical non NPD/no numbers GAF answer:
Imagine how much money Ninty will get with so many people playing their games on multi platforms? Stupid Nintendo rejecting so much money...

Back to subject at hand: Megaman (X not Zero) is definitely one example of getting treated the worst:
* no games for subsequent years while maintaining continuous Zero games,
* cancellation of Legends 3, troll appearance in SFxT,
* alt costume in MvC3, then low budget retro games,
* continued with free play to mobile game that looks like something that won't be even accepted in ArmorGames or Kongregate.com

Earthbound generally doesn't get any love from Ninty besides Smash appearances.

With that said, EA is probably the worst in terms of treating the fanbase of the games it's bought up in the past (Simcity, Syndicate, Bullfrog stuffs in general, etc).

You know, I'm trying to think of a fanbase that hasn't been abused in some way. Call of duty fans I guess? I mean they don't change much from game to game...

Hell, even fans of the sims get abused by constant expansion packs. I think we can draw from this thread that the general hobby of gaming is abusive?

Kid Icarus fans? Granted they had a 25 year wait.

I came here thinking it was going to be about actual fans treated poorly just for liking a title.

I'd say Call of Duty fans get a lot of shit just because they play the game.

But to stay on topic I'll say Battletoads fans.

Did you read what i wrote? Whether or not it was a good game is a matter of their competency as developers, which apparently wasn't up to snuff when developing XIII. How does that constitute a breach of trust? Do you think they specifically made their game worse? And XIII's combat wasn't a thinker? Now that's a nutty opinion. You had to plan quite a lot of pre battle strategy, and, while fighting, employ both short term and long term strategies. And the focus on staggering rather than health points made for much more complex battle pacing, particularly with long boss battles. It was a very good battle system that the game didn't do enough justice, but it was still very good.

me too, XIII and XIII-2 included

Mana. There was the excellent Secret of Mana then the sequel that wasn't released worldwide then a whole lot of crap. The new Mana is supposed to be a mobile game, right?

What's up with people saying Metroid? Because of one bad game?
