As soon as I get my new gaming rig (hhnnggh can't wait) I'm starting a SL1 run as well. Dark Souls makes my backlog weep.

No kidding. I bought 5 games from the sales, and I've clocked around 3 hours total on all of them, with most of my time being spent on DaS. It's a helluva drug.

RIP RIP RIP RIP

Fuck this guy.

Hit my biggest DaS wall yet.

What sort of build are you using? I was having a lot of trouble with a greatsword build since you have so little time to attack and the swings were so slow. Then I upgraded my baulder shield and it made ALL the difference.
So yeah, make sure you have a very good shield for this fight if dodging isn't going well for you!

Oh rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still. Oh lady moon shine down, a little people magic if you will.
You've been invaded by a
NPC ghost, they appear at certain areas when you're human regardless whether you are online or offline.
Thanks for the clarification.
Dumb luck I found him, in that case, since i'm hardly ever human. :p
Defeated and received
a butterfly soul
while exploring the Darkroot Garden. Should I use it to gain souls, or hold on to it for the possible weapon you can make/enhance with it? Description was pretty vague. (yay!)
A buddy reccomended opening the door to Artorias Forest, or watcha call it. Accepted my first covenant and now i'm outta there. Pretty though area.
Those mushrooms look cute.

So anyhow, I decided to go into the Catacombs to see if there's anything handy at the entrance. Those skelletons where pretty easy, so I didn't worry...
...
untill they kept coming back to live. Five of those basterds where chasing me and I was running as fast as I could untill I finally found that necromancer. Good thing they're easy to defeat or I would have thought all skelletons in there would alway's come back, without anything you can do about it.
That was a fun scare. :p
Made a lot of progress in there, but died when I fell off a cliff. There's a body with loot down there, so i'll try falling again. But good, this time.
I hope.
Jumping is quite difficult.

Fun area, though. Those skelletons are pretty fun to fight. :)

That weapon won't be of much use unless you have high Intelligence (which you don't, right). It does pure magic damage.
Unfortunately it doesn't give you many souls either, but it's better than nothing.

You can make a neato shield out of it, which has a somewhat overpowered ranged attack.

You can access the woods through another route. However, I'd recommend you to buy the crest as it saves you quite a lot of trouble (or challenge, depending on your view) ;)

The 20K souls should come with relative ease anyway.

Just beat Artorias. :D
I managed to interrupt his power-up move every time which allowed me to block all his weaker attacks while dodging his stab and jump attacks. Seeing yourself become better at dealing with bosses is really the best part of Dark Souls.

Praise the Sun!!!?

Killed my first Vagrant today, it was at the Sunlight Altar and scared the shit out of me. It's only the third one I've ever seen in hundreds of hours, the other two were both in New Londo.

Oh and my build for arotorias is Longsword +15. Crimson robes upgraded some. Havels helm and silver knight gauntlet. Got havels ring and the stamina ring. I have a crystal shield but I'm two handing it.

Forgot what soul level I was but I'm pretty high.

Invading with SL1 in the Burg was good tonight. Full Havel and dual-wielding Great Axe and Great Club. Most of the time I just stood there, menacing, and people ran away. Or I backstabbed them for MASSIVE damage with the Great Axe. Dropped a few BSS's and Titanite for the hosts before I started any shenanigans though.

Fun times, although most hosts were just confused and stood in place while I sucked a couple of Humanities from them.
...How the hell are you using a Great Axe at SL1?

If you're hacking, please stop being a dick.

Ok guys, I have a question. I just encountered my first Mimic, the one in Sen's Fortress. When I fought him, I got pushed out of the room, to where the large boulders are. The Mimic got hit, and died somewhere halway down the ladder in the back. So the item drop appeared somewhere in mid air, and I couldn't get it. Trying to get it, I died. Now I fought my way back there, and the Mimic is gone, as is the item.
There's no way to get that now, is there?

Yeah it's gone. It's not a very good item anyway.

I hope that's not your main weapon.

Well, I have Astora's Straight Sword, a Halberd, a Crystal Straight Sword, and some Drak Knight Swords I can't use yet. I also have a Drake Sword, which was recommended by a friend, but I felt it made things way too easy, especially in the beginning. So I decided to go through blind from that point on. I don't look at recommended builds, weapons or guides. I just came in hear to make sure I really couldn't get that Lightning Spear anymore, before I waste my time there.

Winged Spear is a good weapon as long as you upgrade it. +3 is very low and you will do a shit damage with it in Sen's Fortress.
I recommend you take a weapon you like and upgrade it to +10 to be able progress without a lot of trouble.

I thought so. Just read up what it was, a Lighning Spear apparently. Dangit, that sounds cool. I really wanted that one. I have a Winged Spear +3 at the moment.
You will be able to make lightning weapons when you get to the next area, so you could always buy/farm a spear and make one then :)

I agree with Soulhouf though, you want to make that Winged Spear a +10 and you should probably have enough large titanite shards to do that by now.

Yonafunu

Member
Yeah, I think I'll stick with the Winged Spear for now. I'm in the middle of Sen's Fortress right now though, so upgrading will have to wait.

Yonafunu

You will hate yourself if you keep going with a +3 weapon trough and after Sens

It's either pushing through Sen's Fortress (or at least trying to), or going back to Andre in Undead Parish. I just got to the roof-like area of Sen's Fortress, with the giant throwing big-ass Firebombs all over the place, so I really don't feel like going all the way back. I'll definitely be upgrading after this though.

There will be a shortcut in the form of a
cage elevator
on the roof, with the key relatively nearby. You should really get a +10 weapon for the place after Sen's.

I fucked up.

When I got back on this game I didn't even realize I was still using the Drake Sword+1 until I ran into the Ceasless Discharge. Now I'm gonna have to grind like a motherfucker to be able to use anything that might have better stats.

When I first started this character I'd intended to level up strength until I could use the Black Knight Halberd. Then I stopped playing the game for like three months and forgot I was even trying to do that until people started bringing up the Drake Sword again. Now I just realized I wasted bunch of souls from bosses I could've used to get closer to that Halberd. Right now the only alternative I have is a Broadsword +5 and nothing with which to upgrade it any further.

Should I go back and try to beat Ceasless Discharge or continue on to Sen's Fortress? Oh, and it was that motherfucker Lautrec that sliced the Fire Keeper wasn't it!

Claymore
Longsword
Zweihander
Balder Side Sword
Halberd

Get any of those, upgrade it and it will start scaling past the drake sword before you get to +10. None of them have very high start requirements either. BKH is a good choice too if you want to put the stats in for it.

You're making the Sen's boss harder by only having that +3 spear, but the next area will be really hard if you don't upgrade.

All the way up to +10? Seems a bit excessive, I'm doing pretty fine so far. I haven't reached the boss yet though.

Yeah, I'll definitely do that after Sen's Fortress. Maybe before going to the boss, if I find a shortcut somewhere (don't tell me where it is!).

Well BKH is pretty much requiring me to invest in Strength so ideally it'd be a weapon that has good strength scaling. That and I'd prefer a one-handed weapon.

Edit: What about the Iaito?

You generally want to upgrade your weapon as far as possible, as soon as possible.

I would look for the shortcut and then upgrade it will be a huge improvement over +3.

I beat Ornstein and Smough on my 3rd attempt (of my first Dark Souls playthrough), I'm so happy! T_T

It was the most tense 20 or so minutes of my gaming life. I'm still jittery from the adrenaline.

Yeah, +10 is a good point to reach for the upcoming area. You'll need 9 large titanite shards to get your weapon from +5 to +10. If you didn't get that many from the Depths or Blighttown, don't worry - Sen's happens to be a great place to get them, provided you do a bit of snooping.

Congratulations, and well done for beating them with relatively so few attempts. Definitely one of the most rewarding fights in the game.

On my first blind run through the game, I had people summoned in Anor Londo and killed O&S easily on first try, so I never understood the hatred for these guys.

Gravelord Nito was the one that made me rage (in a good way).

Thank you. I found that it was the one fight so far in which I had to be the most patient.

Well there you go. Not to disparage you accomplishment, but I tackled them on my own. I think a lot of people who speak of their O and S encounter, at least those who talk in defeated, exasperated tones about the two aren't doing so with hatred.

Fun with Black Knights: I got the Parish Black Knight (on top of the tower) to follow me into Undead Burg - apparently he doesn't want to go near Solaire as he stopped following me halfway across the bridge, but I got him to follow me down the stairs on the bridge and down into Undead Burg.

He chased me around a while but after a while I ran for the bonfire, rested and as I rose I got the BKS and titanite chunk for his death. I guess he fell off the wooden bridge outside the bonfire room or something? Thinking about it now, it might have been more fun to see where he went since they can't climb ladders, would he have tried to walk all the way back to the tower another route?

Anyone else try to get enemies outside of their original zone? I was also kicking Havel out of the tower, but it seems he can't go past the top of the steps into the Basin since he won't go any further than that (either that or he was stuck).

What is the deal with this fucking Ceaseless Discharge character? Half the time he hits me with his fire cannon move before I even finish approaching him and his melee attacks seem nigh impossible to evade. It feels like I'm missing an obvious and gigantic piece of the puzzle over here.

The hitbox for his arm/tentacle is larger than just the model. Keep that in mind when dodging. Try to find some pathways nearby where you can take cover from his melee attack, should make the fight easier.

I can't be bothered with Ceasless, I always use easy method.

But I at least bow before I nab the gear and wave as he falls to his death, it's just polite.

Joining the crowd. I'm a Cheeseless Discharger too. It really feels like rush job.
I'm out of bad puns now...

It's too bad that the game's best armor set is connected to the runner-up crappiest boss in the game.

My method for ceaseless: have a decent weapon, have 10 estus flasks, wear wolf ring, block his attacks, heal when needed, hit him a bunch of times. Works just fine for me.

Good grief, Artorias. When a boss can kill you in two hits, you really got to get good on them dodges. The only opening he really had was after the big jump attack, that could one-shot me, the other openings didn't help because the Reinforced Club is so slow. Started getting really twitchy when I got him near death, but managed to keep it together just long enough.

I don't think he was as hard as O&S though, at least the route to him is faster, and he's alone.

Next up: Manus. Or not. I'm a bit afraid, since he eats my normal characters as snacks..
