Avatar time.

But people told me consoles are dead....
Unless both of PS4/X1 sell an extra 50 million units each (at least 130 million units) the market is going to contract. And most projections seem to place the contraction as far larger than this.

Most projections are saying the market will be smaller this generation than the PS2 generation. I don't know if that means doomed, but it definitely doesn't mean thriving.

It's a lot more than MS but let's not forget that MS launched in 13 countries while Sony launched in way more.

So, between PS4 and Xbox One (and their ~8m combined unit sales in 2 months), next gen is officially saved. Can we finally place the blame for Wii U's failure squarely on Nintendo where it belongs, instead of the nebulous 'softer market demand for game consoles'? Obviously there are still gamers out there and they still want new consoles - just not Nintendo's.

(And just wait until Sony runs up the score in Japan - they may not buy consoles like they used to there, but there's still going to be plenty of demand.)

So aligned launches. How is it comparing to PS2?

Good to see the two next gen consoles doing well. Was not expecting both of them to over take Wii U so quickly.

Incredible numbers, seems like consumers were really hungry for next-gen hardware after spending so much time with previous-gen.

Anyone with a clue knew this a long time ago.

These consoles launched way too late. The market was "soft" because everybody who wanted one already owned and were happy with a PS3 or 360. Nobody who was happy with a PS3 or 360 wanted a Wii U.

very impressive start for both twins. Now they both need to get the content that the amount of content the WiiU has (right now).

So what's the guess for the missing 3 days....

Whatever figure they shipped by the 29th.

Stuff is still selling out, but I don't think it is still selling out before they make it to the shelves universally everywhere(IE handing them out to folks lined up outside the store on shipment day).

Japan, Denmark, Holland etc are not going to help Xbox One as much as Japan alone will help the PS4. PS4 will sell more in Japan alone than Xbox One will in all those tier 2 european countries + Japan

Holy shit. Sony stomped everyone else AND they're way past where even I suspected they'd be by now. This console will have 20+ mill sold by end of the year.

The best thing about this is it puts next gen install base at 7.2 million + making next gen only titles more likely.

Nope. This is still only 2.6%, roughly, of the previous gen's install base.

You're still better off releasing cross-gen for quite some time.

*console gaming is dead*

:lol

Grats Sony. Extremely amazing. Just to think that combined there are over 7 million next gen consoles out in the wild already... just wow. Hopefully now with this already impressive install base, more devs start to focus purely on this gen and not back-gen compatible :)

Yes they have?? PS3 sold 25m+ in US last gen, and hasn't reached 10m in Japan yet.

But it doesn't matter, PS4 was destined to do better. It's only a matter of time before it overtakes WiiU now!

I'm predicting that for at least until E3, Sony will sell more PS4's but make less money due to a slight loss vs MS's slight profit.

Well I came over from Xbox so I added a measly one console to that 4.2 million, I love what the ps4 was targeted as, A gamer console for gamers by gamers, They messed up bigtime at the start of the ps3 so it's good to see them getting there shizz together and I for one am glad to be part of playstation again.
