Game Informer: Evolve (TurtleRock(L4D)/2K, PC/PS4/XB1, CryEn, 4v1 PvP) [Screenshot]

Knew it. Nothing that appeals to me. Never cared much for these games unfortunately :( But I hope for you guys they spend a lot of time writing decent net code, because what is build into CryEngine is less than optimal.

Man. A lot of you are jaded as fuck.

Or have been gaming for what feels like fucking centuries.

Its not a surprise people are apprehensive with regards to the concept. Its not new, and not really proven to be a successful endeavor usually.

I HOPE it turns out great though. Would love to eat crow here.

I just don't understand how you make this interesting with only one player controlled enemy.

If the monster player was chasing the others through a L4D type scenario, as they try to survive from one point to the next I could understand it... but still, what if that player is just crap? How does that not become boring fast? There's nothing else to do, no other enemies to even keep you occupied...

I really want to know how this works.

Give the monster enemy a lot of special abilities I guess. The human players might have objectives like getting to certain spots, getting pickups etc.

Sure, the player controlling the monster could be crap, but that's really no different than your opponent in a fighting game being bad, or the enemy team sucking in a deathmatch game. I'm guessing there'll be some sort of matchmaking system.

eh kinda torn

asymmetrical (is that the right word?) gameplay is really hard to get right
especially if one group starts from a potion of strength and the other gets stronger over time, it can result in a "I'm just going to camp while you guys try to find me for the next 10 mins"

the inclusion of some npcs could help
weak alien npcs to distract the party, give them something to do etc
weak human npcs to provide "resources" to the 1 player, split the attention of the group to try and defend them etc

just 4vs1, idk if a whole game can stand on it's own on that

Whether you like the idea or not, you gotta hand Turtle Rock, THQ, and 2K Games for pushing what seems to be a new genre. 4 players v. 1-super alien player.

Gaming has become so stagnant so it is cool to see someone try something relatively new.

Since the monster evolves over the course of a match, maybe each one will play out in phases. At the start, the co-op team is hunting the monster, but as it gets more powerful the tables are turned and they all end up hiding from it, just trying to survive.

Aw man, another single player game?

I'm not supporting it.

You know how ridiculous I sound? Stop denouncing things and try it out before you do.

I'm glad developers and publishers alike are experimenting with things like multiplayer only games and campaign online based games. It was about time. Single Player needs a new shot in the arm for me, glad we won't get another stale campaign. The future looks bright and I'm glad I don't have to be stuck in the past and not embrace it.

So what powers could the monster have?

- Optical camouflage
- Climb walls
- Stick to ceilings
- Teleportation
- Super-strength
- Tremendous HP
- Health regeneration
- Long-distance jump
- Limited hover/flight
- Area-of-effect attack
- Heat-seeking attack
- Set up traps (I.E. mines)
- See in the dark
- See through walls
- Access vents, etc
- Radar (Mario Chase-style)

That last idea would've made this great for WiiU, lol

I wanted something that was:

1. Singleplayer Only
2. Offline

That goes for both the Game informer reveal AND the original Left 4 Dead. As a single player only experience with a story and campaign it would have been awesome, but with multiplayer-forced it was just a big rush-fest. God, I hate multiplayer shooters. Enough already.

L4D single player? No thanks.

Why aren't some of you guys excited? The previous thread was like 45% "give me L4D3" and now this is basically it in the form of a new IP.

GIVE IT TO ME 2014 DAMMIT.

It's a game form the people who made Left 4 Dead.

They weren't going to make something totally different from their first Valve-separate title.

There are enough games you can look forward to. This is their FIRST cover.

There are still plenty of quality games that have nothing to do with shooting. PlatinumGames released three of them in 2013. Nintendo releases boatloads.

And really, as far as shooters are concerned, Evolve sounds really interesting. It's not a military shooter, for one. And it's about a party of four vs. a super-strong monster, which in my eyes makes it more of a horror game in terms of how it will probably play out (I.E. half your team is picked off, you don't know where the monster will drop down, etc).

The thing looks kind of like Doomsday, it would be awesome if it adapted like him too. So it would evolve powers specifically to resist whatever was attacking it.

By Jove, you're right! It's so simple! One of the most praised co-op experiences to date would've obviously been so much better as an SP game! smh

Reading this thread, you'd think they weren't making single-player games anymore. Even if they had announced some other IP that was SP and offline, there would likely still be folk lamenting it as the death knell of the industry. It's bonkers.

I'm the other way around.

Sometimes I don't have the time to invest in a story or plot. I just jump into an online multiplayer match and I'm set.

If only there were other games that weren't FPS!

Like these: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=745756
Or these: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=741172

Oh, when will the terrible deluge of FPS stop! When will we get other types of games! WHEN!?

Man if this reaches the highs of AvP mutliplayer hnnngggghhh!

The devs can easily add other game modes, such as 2h vs 2m or 8h vs 2m and etc. So this game actually ha a lot of potential.

I hope they make a monster that can cloak itself. :)

The ability to spawn minions or decoys would be cool. And I'd think that the ability to incapacitate players for some amount of time would be quite useful. Or you could just throw them to the other side of the map while you're eating their friends.

I think it would be great if they took a cue from Team Fortress 2 and gave the four members of the team unique abilities. They could all have weapons for self-defense, but for example, if the monster has optical camouflage as one of its abilities, one member of the team might be tasked with brandishing a "de-cloaking device" that charges up and releases a pulse to disrupt the invisibility of the monster if it's nearby. The other players would then have to watch out for the player using the de-cloaking device, since he wouldn't be able to defend himself while using it.

That's just one example. There could be various tools at the players' disposal to help locate the monster or elude it. And then the monster would have to make clever use of its abilities to get to the players. One neat trick might be if the monster can create noises faraway, distracting the players and getting them to cautiously approach one corner, when unbeknownst to them the monster is actually behind them.

Or walk through walls, or just be able to bust through them like Nemesis, only not scripted.

That would be amazing! Maybe the monster can have a "listen" mode like Joel in The Last of Us, where it can see the silhouettes of players on the other side of the wall... and maybe the monster can see cracks in the wall that indicate a breakthrough point for Nemesis-style ambushes (and the points could be randomized from one match to another, so as not to become predictable to players who memorize the map).
