Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Why not link to the post he made two minutes after that one, where he agrees that it'll be around 4?

Because I only remembered reading the first one? I didn't go through his whole post history, it's really not that important to me.

Now I can finally realise the dream of playing a game created for PS2, ported to PS3, then streamed to PS4.

3 gens 1 console

edit: oops wrong PS4 thread

Impressive. Just impressive (and well deserved).

If we sum PS4 + XB1 sales we already have over 7 million consoles sold: more than enough to fuel any third-party investment for developers.

Good times ahead!

That is the best bit. It might still take a little while for the games to kick in, but with these numbers you know everybody is going to be jumping onboard.

They weren't modest. 5 mil was reasonable number for a "popular console".

But now, PS4 is hevily supply constrained, almost every console is sold instantly.
Yeah, when they first announced their 5 million target I thought they were being overly optimistic.

Now it looks likely that they'll fly past their target.

Crazy stuff.

Nonsense. A TV app.*

Microsoft is addicted to recurring revenue and they have been trying to move everything they offer to a subscription/SaaS model. Don't ever expect that to change unless it blows up in their faces to such an extent that it becomes a threat to the company.

XBLG is their version of the Windows support contract.

Impressive. I have to serve me some crow since I I said XBO and PS4 wouldn't be able to outship the Wii U due to the lack of Japanese sales. PS4 has probably already outsold the Wii U in the West.

Is the list of countries below right?

...

That is something I can agree with.

If Microsoft is happy with their sales trajectory and margins in the business it's entirely possible they'll do just that. Microsoft has no CEO to drive a big shift in strategy and if the rumors are correct they are working under a large amount of shareholder pressure to maintain profitability in the unit or get rid of it.

They would be very relevant: in the U.S. It may or may not be the largest market (some claim EU is bigger these days), but historically the long-term outlook for console companies that are only relevant in one region is not so good.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing maybe MS would be happy having 30-40% of the next gen video game market and making money with that.

The last time this did somthing somthing dratic was with the OG xbox slashing 100 bucks of the price, and I dont see the X1 ever being in the same situation as the OG xbox.

-------------------------

as for what MS can do to close the sales gap, I thorght it was comman GAF knoledge, it is dicussed enough, but here are the most comman things ppl think they can do.

  • Drop price
  • make kinect separate
  • more exclusives (games and DLC)
  • bundle in games and XBL

Wow, monster numbers! Sony did everything right and for their asking price PS4 was a no-brainer. The scary thing is this is just the beginning. I can't wait to see what they roll out over the next 6 years.

I hope the strong PS4 sales figures have a positive effect on Japanese developers.

I think Japanese developers dropped the ball last gen because of the confusion created by the x360's success. They tried to support x360 as best they could and lagged behind on PS3 support. They should have supported the Sony console to at least an equal degree. By not doing so, they shot themselves in the foot (Sony needed their support from the get go, x360 was irrelevant in their home market, those games that were coming to the x360 only would have been more profitable if they had been on PS3 as well).
Japanese devs didn't do shit for the 360.

Anyway, great numbers for Sony and good for gaming.

I have a feeling with all the things locked behind gold, this gap will get larger faster.

But Xbox Live Gold (TM) is the superior online gaming service. 5 billion transistors and the Cloud (TM), which will make the games 600% better. And, now, with your Games with Mold (TM) offers, you get much more value for your money. You're not simply paying to connect and play with your friends online, you're also paying for free games and apps.*

Not even surprised.
Would have hit 5m easily if there were enough to go around.

Cheers to Sony. The better video game company won. They learned a lot from PS3 and turned it around.

Guys, there's room for both Coke and Pepsi.

I'm glad the next gen machines are doing as well as they are. I was getting worried people had moved on from this hobby.

Nope. I am pretty happy here at Xbox with what we have planned.
Dude, you don't even need to add the teaser. Shifting 3 million consoles at that price after the awful run up to the XBone launch is no mean feat.

There are two winners of 2013. I wouldn't sweat the fact that one won more than the other.

Fantastic sales alongside the Microsoft numbers.

It really does show the Wii U in a very bad light.

That's what kills me. the PS4 isn't even all that revolutionary. It's got a great online infrastructure and PS+ is very well implemented, but in just about every way that matters it's the PS2 with better graphics.

If nintendo had paid more attention to the market and followed up the Wii with a GCN version 2.0 that was actually on par with what the PS4 and Xbone were putting out, they would be fine right now.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
4.2 million people haven't seen Titanfall.

They will just have to wait until Titanfall 2 or Titanfall: PS4 Edition.

I wonder what is going on at EA right now. Titanfall was always going to sell more on PC/360 but to lose out on a market that has 4.2 million consoles in people's hands begging for new games is rough.

Makes me wonder how much MS paid for it. But even then, I don't think the amount they paid for it was based on if the PS4 would sell more than 4 million this fast.

Maybe my math is off but if the PS4 sold 4.2 mill at $400 and the X-One sold 3+ mill at $500 aren't they almost the same figures?

Why would MS need to drop the price/Kinect? Or bundle it with a game for that matter? They're in the business of making money and right now Sony is not really making more than them despite being a hundred dollars cheaper.

Also, I'm aware of the supply constraints of Sony but MS has not released it's system in all areas as of yet. So while the PS4 will clearly be out front, and I'm sure will stay there due to the price, when MS does launch it will cut into the lead some.

A couple of things

Firstly platform holders do not make any serious money off of selling consoles. The entire point of the hardware is to get it into homes and get people buying games and online subscriptions so they can get royalties for being platform holders.

Secondly the first 3 years or so of a new generation are the most important time usually to build an install base as there is serious potential for a snowball effect like the PS2 era where you got the console all your friends got and it got serious amounts of 3rd party exclusives just due to its massive install base. I however believe there will be little in the way of "natural" 3rd Party exclusives due to the architecture being so close and the likelihood the XB1 will still have a healthy install base (50+ million)

Thirdly both companies in question need their video game division to do well at the risk of serious future consequences. Sony can absolutely not have a repeat of last gen. They need to make money, they need to be profitable lest they get shut down/spun off etc. Hell lest Sony goes bankrupt lol. While MS as a company is doing very well, the xbox division has never been a real money maker compared to other divisions (Office, Windows etc.) and thus there has been a real push by shareholders to evaluate the potential of the Xbox division going forward with recommendations to spin it off. Having 30% less boxes out there then your closest competitor means 30% less opportunity to upsell subscriptions and so on. Obviously though MS may make more money per user and/or decide that's the route they want to take, however a larger install base is always objectively better from the platform holders perspective as well as from their shareholders perspective.

Finally the general consensus has always been that both consoles would sell out for the first 2 or 3 months and thus it didn't matter in the least bit what countries a console did or didn't launch in because they would both be supply-constrained. However the availability of the XB1 in the US would lead to the notion that the XB1 is starting to become readily available in the US. Thus the PS4 is supply-constrained having sold 40% more than the XB1 while the XB1 is not supply-constrained. Again this is not an enviable position to be in as a platform holder.

Around november I posted PS4 will sell 5mil by the end of the year.. Then I think someone replied to it and said he/she thinks 4mil. lol almost right on the money.

I predict 20-24mil PS4 by the very last week of Dec 2014 lol.

That is the whole point. They did nothing for the 360 sales-wise, but they attempted to support it early on at the expense of PS3 support. Basically, Japanese developers should not WASTE their time on the MS console this time around.

No, they should be worried right now. Any hope they had of having equal market share this gen is already gone.

MS sold approximately 55m consoles between NA + UK (which is about ~70% of the total Xbox 360 install base). So these are very key markets for MS. While Sony sold approximately 30-35m consoles in NA + UK (between 38-43%) but still stands on 80m worldwide. So if MS remeains equal to Sony in these two territories, expect Sony to have at least a 20 million unit lead. This could just as easily rise to a 30 million unit lead.

I'm harsh on Nintendo a lot of the time and I would love the Nintendo of my youth to come back to us, but at the same time I don't know what else they can really do in the short to mid-term at least.

They have long since lost the reputation for great gameplay AND great graphics that they had back in the SNES/N64 days and it takes a ton of time to win that kind of respect back. People have repeatedly claimed they're going back to that and I keep not believing them.

Nintendo needs to change their entire corporate culture before they can even begin to win back the respect of 'core gamers'. They're a decade behind in multiplayer and they are still entirely married to proprietary hardware, software, and media. Just course correcting on both of those will take years if they start now and they would still need to repair their third-party developer relationships.

Doesn't work, ASDA cola sells in Europe.
