No, they should be worried right now. Any hope they had of having equal market share this gen is already gone.

It's way too early to say that. Sony was able to close a gap millions wide, and well, it's only been two months for this gen. Anything can happen in terms of sales in the coming months and years.

Right now though, sony does have an early lead. It's up to sony to keep that lead though.

I expect the gap between PS4 and xbox to continue to widen throughout the year to the point PS4 will have near 2:1 lead and all other regions will be already won by a wide margin.

I'm harsh on Nintendo a lot of the time and I would love the Nintendo of my youth to come back to us, but at the same time I don't know what else they can really do in the short to mid-term at least.

They have long since lost the reputation for great gameplay AND great graphics that they had back in the SNES/N64 days and it takes a ton of time to win that kind of respect back. People have repeatedly claimed they're going back to that and I keep not believing them.

Nintendo needs to change their entire corporate culture before they can even begin to win back the respect of 'core gamers'. They're a decade behind in multiplayer and they are still entirely married to proprietary hardware, software, and media. Just course correcting on both of those will take years if they start now and they would still need to repair their third-party developer relationships.

It's a bit late for the WiiU, personally I don't think there's anything one can do there.
Their handheld systems are still strong sellers, but sales there are down from last gen and very vulnerable to competition from tablets and smartphones.

Some kind of hybrid portable device with as much power as they could muster could turn things around in a year or two, maybe.

xbone sold great despite the bad pr, but sony has this one in the bag, its obvious a year ago, its still obvious now.

Makes me wonder how much MS paid for it. But even then, I don't think the amount they paid for it was based on if the PS4 would sell more than 4 million this fast.
It certainly had to be based on at least Sony's 5m number. EA got paid, don't doubt that.

Impressive. I have to serve me some crow since I I said XBO and PS4 wouldn't be able to outship the Wii U due to the lack of Japanese sales. PS4 has probably already outsold the Wii U in the West.

Is the list of countries below right?

You are right.
But there could be some UAE left, who received theirs on 17th?Not sure about it.

Actually the yield issues rumors do hold up. PS4 sold 1.2m more and even shipped to more countries.

eh, if anecdotal evidence means anything there are TONS of Xbones stacked up to the rafters in the US/UK right now.

1.2 million unsold is probably stretching it, but i could see 500K+ hanging out on shelves in NA+UK, whereas sony literally sold every single unit they could get out there.

Sony was able to close the gap because it was much more popular in pretty much every market outside of the US and UK.

And now they lost both of those with no hope of a comeback. Gen is already over tbqh. I expect 3rd parties to only got to PS4 because putting games on bone would see a bad ROI.

Good sales Sony! Nice number. Both machines sell great. Make about the same earnings if you count the difference in price.

Would have imagined a bigger gap.
PS4 is available WW and Xbox One in only 13 countries. and is (100 euro/dollar more expensive)

That is the whole point. They did nothing for the 360 sales-wise, but they attempted to support it early on at the expense of PS3 support. Basically, Japanese developers should not WASTE their time on the MS console this time around.

MS bought Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey cash on the barrel. Outside of Ninja Gaiden, I can't remember them doing jack early. They were incompetent on their own and it had nothing to do with the 360.

If Sony indeed jumps back into the lead I really hope we see a sharp decline in the FPS genre.

I remember the glory days of the PS2 when every genre seemed to be well represented. Right now ... bleh.

My guess is they are WAY in the lead in Europe, 2:1 in UK and will lose December NPD by a very small margin, like 10K units or something negligible. But enough for Kotaku / Polygon 5 page articles and atleast 10 MS tweets.

haha...i agree with this. during the PS2 days i never touched an fps game.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I wonder if their contract has a clause that states they owe X amount if PS4 sells Y amount.

Not surprised at all. I expected the PS4 to sell to sell at least 6million to end of the financial year. It was always obvious with the pre order numbers that the demand was there.

It's not impossible, but Microsoft doesn't have near the history that Sony does in Europe and Japan is almost certainly a lost cause. Even the 360 did what, 2M LTD in Japan?

The PS1 was the only console that had ever been successful worldwide up to that point and since then only maybe the Wii can claim the same feat. For Microsoft to realistically win this demand for the PS4 has to entirely collapse in either the U.S. or Europe.

I disagree, I think such a form factor forces compromises that would undermine both use cases and it would still do nothing for their failures in services and third-party relationships.

Nintendo can get away with not having region-free games (however much I dislike it), but they can't get away with not having good third-party support or online multiplayer.

I don't think that will happen. GC and Xbox still got third party games despite being way behind.

I make it a point to swing by the electronics section of any store I visit and have always found bones available since launch. I saw 2 ps4's behind glass for the first time a couple days ago.

thats because all the FPS fans were on the OG Xbox.

And before THAT, they were on the n64 with Goldeneye (about 9+ million sold), Turok, Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, etc.

FPS isn't going anywhere, it just shifts platforms now and then.

Good on them. Along with PS4's being scarce on shelves it shows how starved people were for new hardware like I said, because there's even a very limited amount of software available out there at this point. And like I said before, E3 this year is going to be a bloodbath because it's going to come to one major key focus, games. That is the only thing that could hurt Sony is if they don't have much to show from their first party stables. They need to have a full venture here too, meaning Japan Studios needs to have their shit together this gen and not just Polyphony showing signs of life, barely.

It's also interesting the entertain the thought that this gen may end up being won by the end of this year.

This last gen dragged on far, far too long. It created a hunger sure, but I'm still standing that console makers may have lost a good bit of gamers to PC as well.

At least this should limit the amount of terrible multi-gen titles holding back gaming quality progress.

Imagine what it would be without legitimate supply constraints, something else to think about.

Without the kinect, xbone still costs more to manufacture than ps4

IIRC, the breakdowns had MS making $28/console and Sony $18, with Kinect being ~$75. Don't have the thread handy, and the numbers could be off since I'm going off lolmemory.

Of course, it just goes back to the point that the lion's share made off the systems comes from software & services, which is precisely why both of them want to be in the top position. Any per-console profit is a relative pittance in comparison.

They will just have to wait until Titanfall 2 or Titanfall: PS4 Edition.

I wonder what is going on at EA right now. Titanfall was always going to sell more on PC/360 but to lose out on a market that has 4.2 million consoles in people's hands begging for new games is rough.

Or they'll just play on PC, like me.

Impressive. Great job Sony, and also Microsoft, who's managed to sell 3m even though it costs more. Greatness awaits indeed!

I'll contribute to those numbers some day.I want a PS4 so bad I even dreamt about it a couple of times. In my dream I would play Knack and Killzone.
(A Ps4 costs 1684,85 dollars here, so yeah... I can't afford it )

I think the US is the only competitive market left. UK seems to be full swinging to PS4. Not sure what situation is in Australia, might be close there.

I mentioned this before in another thread, but my own experience was going through KOP mall the weekend before christmas. It's just outside of philadelphia and is the largest in the US in terms of retail space (at least, according to wiki).

Literally every single store that could conceivably have Xbones had stacks and stacks of the damn things, and there were even dedicated kiosks in the middle of the mall that did nothing but sell Xbox Ones.

Meanwhile, Gamestop was literally laughing people out of the store who were asking about PS4s. The demand between the two systems wasn't anything close to even.
