Sony won't offer option to disable PS4 DualShock 4 light bar

Are devs using it anyway? Hard to use a light for visual feedback when it's on the other side of your controller.

I think they're at least trying in that launch window gimmick way. I know one of the new Tomb Raider features is that it does crap wih the lightbar.

Sparingly, in Warframe for example it flashes when your character is hit. With it being so bright you see the flashing reflected off of your fingers or clothing.

Assuming the majority of us won't buy or use the camera, and further assuming the rest of us would rather have battery life over half used mega bright LEDs of death, it is hard to justify it being there isn't it?

Dude, it's a low power LED not a friggin' lighthouse. Put it on the sofa facing the backrest and I'm pretty sure it's undetectable.
It's moronic that I would have to do anything like that with a controller. There's a reason they don't put giant lights on TV remotes.

I don't even personally have a problem with the light, but it's stupid that people think that people should have to find a way to hide a giant useless light on the front of their controller instead of the company fixing something that is obviously bothers a lot of people and serves little to no purpose.

This is bullshit. There's no reason they can't do this, and in a projector set up, the lightbar is way too bright, and annoying as fuck. Might have to open the controller and just cut the stupid cord.

The Dual Shock 4 is my preferred controller now (over the X1), but it would be so much better if it had better battery life and the ability to turn off the stupid light bar. Kill two birds with one stone Sony, and just let us turn the stupid thing off. We all know it is only there to serve the camera, and since you decided not to include it in the box, it's useless to most of us.

Here's a handy youtube on how to disable it:

I tweeted Shu this video ;-)

He never responds when I actually have a question -__-
I still love him

Such a mindboggingly stupid design idea.

I really can't understand what they were thinking with that one.

Also the video above doesn't address the battery concern nor the reflex when i'm actually playing a videogame.. you know on the console for the gamers.

If he was quoting the original comment then I understand better due to twitters character limitation. He isn't, so he can write "Not right now", or "We are evaluating this option", or "we are happy with its operation but will consider this".... anything. 'No' has a finality to it which we know for a fact isn't final so comes off as arrogant.

It's not arrogant. It's the answer to the question. If he'd have said "No, idiot." THAT would have been arrogant. Sony doesn't have any plans to let users control the lightbar. That's the answer. It's not on their priority board, and either they haven't discussed it internally or they have - either way, the answer to that question still ends up being "no".

It seems like you'd rather him tell you "Maybe", even if it's not true?

Vicious DS - But shu already shot that down, he of said the doubled battery life - "that's untrue"

To be fair, he knows the actual power draw of the LED's and we don't. I'm not saying anyone with experience to the contrary is a liar or anything, but I haven't actually seen any concrete evidence that disabling the LED's leads to a dramatic battery life increase. I'd be interested in any videos or anything of Farslain's controllers under gaming conditions lasting 2 days without a recharge. If that's the case, then I will be interested in disabling my light too, even though it doesn't bother me and I kind of like it. But actually doubling the battery life would be worth it.

Isn't this how he usually answers things? He's pretty pithy on twitter from what I've seen of his quoted responses here on GAF.

But then again I prefer these simple and straightforward answers to the more traditional and empty PR nonsense, even if they aren't the answers I was hoping for.

That's a shame.

Thankfully I've modded my 3 controllers and about 10 for family and friends so the light is disabled. If I ever buy the camera I'll install physical switches.

Takes about 5 minutes to open the controller and use tape to mask off half of the ribbon cable feeding the led matrix, you leave the other half of the cable live to allow for USB charging. I imagine if you have the charging cradle you can just unplug the ribbon altogether.

Regarding battery life, it is massively better, all day gaming sessions become a reality where they are impossible with the light on. With light the controllers would get charged 2-3 times daily for heavy use, with the light disabled that becomes charged every 2-3 days.

One caveat to having no light, it does make it less obvious your battery is low, and with it lasting so long a dead battery sneaks up on you. I can see myself modding a tiny low power led in to the controller at some point.

Make a youtube video on this, get millions of views and lets see how Sony responds.

Don't Inhexster(?)'s PC driver allow you to turn the lightbar off? so it's possible and easy thing to do and there is no reason to not give PS4 users the option to turn it off if they want. :/

Sony doesn't give a shit there making money hand over fist and are back to the PS2 days of being arrogant assholes. At least release a Dual Shock 4.2 that gets rid of all that gimmicky shit especially the light bar.

That's three layers of tape it's shining through. Red isn't bad but the blue, green, and yellow is bright. I like the colors and the info it gives so I don't want it gone completely but it's kind of nuts how powerful the light is.

Damn, it's bright even in a photo.

I'm sure they'll come up with a DS4 v2.0 that has a bigger battery and comes with the option to turn that off. I remember when PS3 first came out and the controllers didn't even have rumble features. They added that back in with v2.0

Just keep on bugging Sony. They'll fix it.

Would be nice for them to give an option to those that find this to be a problem.

I still find it silly for those that see it as a problem though...

Probably someone who fell for the misconceptions that Sony simply copies other companies and doesn't do anything original, like inventing the walkman, CDs, pushing DVD players, blu-ray, motion/camera technology before the Wii, remote play before the Wii U, etc.

Hilarious list. Sony didn't invent any of these things. They paid out to a Swedish guy who nailed the portable cassette format 7 years prior to them regarding the walkman, collaborated with Philips on the CD, Toshiba/Matsushita invented DVD, Blu-ray was a collaboration between Philips, Sony, Pioneer and TDK, if they really did come up with motion/camera controls first then they clearly had no idea what to do with it, "etc.".

I love the light, because my room is too dark and I'm forever losing controllers, my 3DS and Vita, and the tv remote. It's gotten to the point where I've begun buying white charging cables whenever possible, because they're easier to find in a dark room (I do most of my gaming at night, while my wife is asleep beside me with the lights out). That blue light shines like a beacon, and makes locating the controller an easy endeavour. However, knowing the toll the damn thing has on the battery, and the fact that the controller never goes to sleep like a 360 controller (as far as I know) that it eats at me to just leave it on and not plugged in. Although I would INSTANTLY lose the controller, I would kill for an ability to turn the damn light off.

Also, the blue PS button on the Vita has saved my bacon more times than I care to remember.
I promise my room isn't dirty :/

Where do the people complaining hold their controller while gaming?, in front of your face?, up to your chest?... i don't see how this is a problem. Is the telly on the ground?

I sit in a computer chair with my tv on a small stand about 7 feet away from me, and the bottom of the tv starts about level with my knees when I'm in the chair. I'm simply holding the controller in my hands with my forearms/wrist resting on my legs, and the DS4 lightbar is always visible at the very bottom of my screen. It's annoying as fuck.

They better prepare a new batch of controllers, because they have to replace millions of them when the thunbsticks gum will start to fall apart.
My ds4 is still ok but we have a two year warranty here in europe.
Ship them with an improved battery

They put in 8GB of GDDR5, allow used games, stay region free, launch at an unexpectedly low price and do all kinds of other fan service, and THIS is the thing where they want to stick to their guns?

There must be more to that light bar than meets the eye.

Excuse me if this has been answered already, but it has been stated that if the controller turns off during Netflix, the video will pause (wtf). Does this also go for DVD/Blu Ray playback?

Kind of pathetic that people have to resort to putting tape on their controller to cover the light bar. How hard would it be to offer a software update that disables it? Stuff like this makes me think the execs at Sony never learn.

If the LEDs do not use much battery, they need to release a new controller model that is not fucking ridiculous at sucking up battery. It's obscene really how often the controller needs to be recharged.

The LED light itself has not actually been a big problem for me, rarely reflects on the TV where I sit, but they should still offer the option. There's really no reason that option is not there. Wii Remote had a speaker that was used in games, and yet we could turn that volume all the way down or whatever. How hard is it to simply have a system option that lets us turn off the LED light? It's so useless in its current form, the one really gimmicky feature of the controller that I don't think I've stared at more than once since I owned the system.

I didn't even know this was still an issue for people. I guess my TVs height as well as my distance from it has made it a non issue for me. I still think it's silly that they won't budge on it. Especially if you don't even have a camera, the light adds nothing but superficial. And it's certainly not worth having it reflect in your tv for those having this issue.

The other issue that is more important is the battery life. This should not be sucking battery life. So I guess it actually is a big issue. Not a good look Sony.

We just have to wait for Sony to say that being able to turn off lights is a last gen feature.

After having my PS4 for almost a month, I didn't even have this bother me at any point.

Options are good though.

Same. But if it impacts battery life, then it's insane they don't offer the option to turn it off when you aren't using the camera. What a poor design.

I remember playing Warframe at launch. The lightbar was a freaking disco. It was changing colours as I played, even my dog was looking at me annoyed.

It must be possible to physically remove the LED from the controller?

There is most likely a wire or a trace that can be cut to remove the power going to the LED. The PS4 controller has already been padhacked to death to add support to things like fightsticks so I'd wager you could go over to the SRK forums and find diagrams if you wanted to tackle it yourself. The problem wouldn't be cutting power to it but getting the controller apart and putting it back together.
