The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Here is my collection. It's not much, but the majority of games that I have played are ones that are my absolute favorites!

Now call me crazy, but someone had mentioned to me that the graphics chip or something in the GCN makes 480p on it look much better then the Wii and having seen both I'm thinking that's true.

Or they both look the same and I want to believe GCN looks better to justify the purchase of the component cables lol.

I took some comparison shots through a component capture card, and while there is a difference it's fairly negligible.
Here's one of the comparisons. (GC left, Wii right)
There's more in the full post.

i picked up a copy in the UK for like $5...i think my man chacras is a bit harsh but honestly, i dug it for what it was but don't revisit it often. it's worth hitting up on the cheap, but as i recall, it takes quite a bit of room on the memory card so bear that in mind!

It takes an entire Memory Card 59... but fortunately, it came with one for free.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Yeah, it's really tough to take a screenshot that demonstrates the difference, but it's definitely there. I tried playing F-Zero on the GC and Wii on a much bigger TV last night, and the GC did look a lot cleaner. Where you can see the difference in those shots is in the "3" on the monitors. On the Wii, you can see a bunch of horizontal lines going through it. On the GC, it looks fine. Well, that sort of artifacting is basically all over the place. The difference isn't as pronounced as those shots from way back suggest, but it's still very noticeable.

Hi all, I've been meaning to post in this thread for awhile. I have fond memories of the gamecube because it was the first console that I bought after my gaming hiatus. I had a Sega Genesis with a couple of games for a few years after college but then stopped playing any games for about 16 years until my daughters were 8 & 5. Got them a used gamecube for Christmas.

Yeah, when they were trying to clear out their GameCube stock they started selling component cables and BB Adapters at ridiculously low prices.

BTW, I got my Wavebirds for just $17 a piece from Gamestop too.

I did pick up a BBA for $1 and Bongo Drums for $2 thanks to Gamestop. I also picked up a brand new sealed Gamecube for $20 3-4 years ago. I also have a sealed Zelda Gamecube that I bought somewhere else for cheap.

Never found any component cables anywhere except on Ebay where I bought 2 for around $60 each.

I really liked the wavebird so much that I have 9 of them. 5 grey and 4 platinum so I'm set for life.

Apparantly the PQ was really easy to pirate for too relative to the regular cube. I'd never do it personally, but if we're talking about why people bought it sometimes...

I don't think the PQ was any different from a regular gamecube in terms of hacking other than the ability to play full-sized DVD without modifying the case.

People bought it for the prestige not for piracy.

Piracy on the Gamecube requires a modchip whether you use a Q or a normal Gamecube.

I agree that it would be rare for someone to modify the PQ since the device costs so much. I think there are 4 ways to hack the gamecube. They are:

1. Phantasy Star Online/BBA method
2. Action Replay
3. Mod chip (Qoob, Viper, Xeno, etc)
4. Drive replacement (e.g, WODE)

I have never tried #1 even though I do have the parts to do it. I should try it sometime to see how it works. I have used #2 to run the SNES emulator off an SD card. For #3, I tried using the Viper so that the kids would play with my copies instead of the real discs when they were younger but I would see the drive read error too frequently so I gave up and just used the real discs. My kids were careful with them so I never had any scratched discs.

I think my kids favorite game was Zelda Four Swords Adventures. We will play that from time to time with 3 GBAs. There's always fighting between my daughters when one of them is "killed" and the other grabs all of their jewels.

My favorite game on the system was Thousand Year Door. My girls enjoyed watching me play that game. They were very sad near the end where the computer died or something like that.

Nowadays, I spend most of my limited time with the DSi XL or 3DS XL.

I took a quick look on Ebay to see what the going rate for component cables, and wow, I'm shocked. I thought $70 was expensive and it seems that the going rate is about $140 with some going as high as $200.

There were a couple that went for $30 and 1 for $80. The former were system & cable bundled together in a Buy It Now auction.

Yeah, I got my cables new, back in 2012. I must've done it just in time, because I "only" paid $85 for them. But then, GC prices have been going up across the board.

Just curious, did you adjust the laser pot?

Yes, I did adjust it. For the most part, it worked but for some games, I would get DRE too frequently so I just gave up and used the real discs.

The one game I remembered it happening the most was for Paper Mario TTYD. It seems to happen most whenever there were a lot of sprites on the screen. I never got around to trying to rip from my own copies. It's possible that I used a bad rip.

I don't know how many games I have in my collection. I think it's somewhere around 100. Lots of junk like sports and licensed games but I do have most of the must-have classics (e.g, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem)

So are Action Replay disks region free? I keep reading conflicting reports on this. Would love to be able to play NTSC-U/PAL games on my Japanese Gamecube.

Lots of people hate actually that game.

Despite being obsessed with Mario Kart 64 as a kid, I never owned Double Dash until a couple of years ago. Even then I haven't played it extensively. I think cos the general vibe at the time was that it wasn't as good, and I guess I spent my $150 on something else back then.

I always liked MKDD but even I'll admit the battle mode was a massive downgrade from MK64. Other than that, I don't get the seething hate it gets. It's still a fun game!

I loved Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.

Unfortunately, I accidentally left my disc in a friend's GameCube years ago, and his little brother and sister ended up scratching it, and it wouldn't work when I got it back. I tried getting it fixed at Play N Trade, but they couldn't get it work. :(

I still need to get a replacement disc...

Yeh I actually have nothing against it, I'd love to put some hours into it now. I just remember the general vibe about it wasn't good back in the day.

what are peoples top 10 Gamecube games? I am going to grab a few titles I think. I already clocked Wind Waker, which was stunning. What else should I play?

Its great for local 4 player, tons of fun and really distinct experience from everything else, it might actually be the only 4 player co op / splitscreen racing game.

Question depends, do you want titles ONLY available on Gamecube?

I ask because it really changes the answer, for example, if you say that you dont care about exlusive, I would put Metroid Prime on the list, otherwise I wouldnt since you can get that for the Wii. Anyway:

In no particular order:

Rogue Squadron games (a bit on the hard side though)
Metroid Prime
Mario Sunshine...
Eternal Darkness
REmake and RE0
Smash Bros Melee
Metal Gear Solid (Only way to play the original MGS with better graphics even if some of the content changes are questionable)
Star Fox Adventures (kind of a good bye letter from RARE to Nintendo)
F-Zero GX
Paper Mario

Either Rogue Squadron II or Rogue Squadron III depending on if you have someone to play co-op with because RS III has most missions from RS II available for cooperative two player action! Awesomesauce on a disc! (Of course ultimately, get both! lol)

Resident Evil Remake
because definitive version (also re-released on Wii in the RE Archives series)

Metroid Prime
self explanatory

Eternal Darkness
really cool horror adventure with a dose of Poe and Lovecraft

F-Zero GX
it will melt your face off!

I will take any opportunity to make a list.
My personal top 10 is
1. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
4. Viewtiful Joe
5. Super Smash Bros. Melee
6. Resident Evil 4
7. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings & The Lost Ocean (I admit most don't like this game as much as me)
8. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
9. Pikmin 2
10. F Zero GX

Some of these can be found on other consoles, but many of these are best played on the 'cube.

Well I'll be playing them on a Wii but cheers dude, that's helpful. I'd forgotten about Eternal Darkness, cracking game that. I would like to play through MGS again but it is kind of pricey and I'm on a budget. I rememebr thinking Starfox adventures was shit back in the day but I only gave it 10 minutes or so. Did I have it wrong? What's the other Starfox game like?

I actually loved Super Mario Sunshine, but a lot of people didn't care for it.

Beyond that, and you're already mentioned Wind Waker
Super Monkey Ball (1 and 2)
Mario Kart Double Dash
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (if you have bongos)
Beach Spikers
Metroid Prime
Soul Calibur II
Super Mario Strikers

Love the GameCube. I've put my GameCube collection away but I'm always buying new games.

Some stuff you dudes and dudettes may like.

I think you're looking for Freeloader which lets you play games region-free. Buying a copy of Action Replay also comes with Freeloader.

I actually really like that game, it does have some frustrating game design in it, the graphics are amazing for its time.

I'm sad that I never got to see Rogue Squadron in 480p. I had to settle for S-Video which still looked great but still made me sad seeing 480p greyed out in the options.

It just goes to show that Nintendo used to care about technology. Most TVs still had RCA and S-Video only connections back then. Gamecube felt like Nintendo's last attempt at competing.

1. Eternal Darkness
2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
3. Metroid Prime
4. Skies of Arcadia Legends
5. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
6. XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association
7. F-Zero GX
8. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
9. Ikaruga
10. Capcom vs. SNK 2: EO

There are many, many more good GC games of course... if I did an honorable mentions list it'd end up having a few dozen games on it.

How was Starfox assault? I'd sold my Cube before this saw a release I think
It's okay. Decently good game really.

Do you know if XGRA is better on the Gamecube than the PS2?, I love that game but only own it on PS2, would double dip if it is the superior version.

The GC and Xbox versions have four player splitscreen multiplayer, while on PS2 it is two player only -- just like XG3, which is four player on GC and two player on PS2. Also I imagine the graphics probably look slightly better on GC, though I don't have it for any other systems. Going by reviews, the GC version has a better framerate than the PS2 version, but the Xbox version has that better framerate too and also slightly better graphics.

Also, apart from the top four, that list isn't in a definite order. XGRA could go in 5th, for instance; the game is my favorite 6th gen racing game, after all... And I'm still thinking of listing all of the other GC games I like. :)
