Tomb Raider Definitive Edition - PlayStation 4 = ~60fps, Xbox One = ~30fps

I honestly don't get the shock. Back when we thought the PS4 only had 4gb gddr5 ram it still beat the xbox one on paper. They doubled the ram, this is going to be the norm pretty much all gen. And even if xbox one games get to 1080p 60fps its not like the PS4 is going to stay the same. Graphics settings will probably go to from High to Ultra.

Yeah this is one thing im scared about.

Yo ProvenD. If they cant even get parity in a shiny upport of a last gen game then how will future games have parity? There WILL be a big gap.

So one developer can't get the games running at equal levels means other devs can't? That doesn't make any sense.

I'm off to bed, hopefully this thread will be alive tommorow. :D

In any case, this was a wild ride.

What games out there for both systems have performance parity? NONE. All look or perform better on PS4. It's just a much stronger machine. And yes it does make sense.

Nevermind, I see your post about Battlefield. You do know that it runs in a lower resolution on Xbox One right?

Yeah forget that there is a disparity in resolution between each version of COD: Ghosts,
Assassin's Creed, and Battlefield 4. No, those differences have nothing to do with it.

Launch titles don't have anything to do with what the life cycle will be. It's their first dab at the thing and people are shocked the console with superior specs looks better.

I've seen BF4 run on both systems. I've found xbox does better with frames.

Opinion does not equate to facts

"Hard evidence of the PS4's frame-rate lead for the retail release of Battlefield 4 - even with its 50 per cent increase in resolution it can typically command a 10fps+ advantage during our stress-tests. However, both versions do have their pitfalls."

So first you say that because ONE developer can't port a game correctly that its non-issue, then we remind you that every other launch game thus far has shown some sort of PS4 advantage. And now you're saying launch titles aren't indicative of the consoles life cycle. Which is it? Is it one game thats ported poorly or is it launch games that should be discounted?

I don't like this. I really hope this turns out to be wrong :/

I doubt it will be the case.

I'd imagine for the majority of multi-plats, as everything is x86 the PC will be likely be the target and the PS4 and Xbone versions scaled accordingly. We've not seen a next gen game so far were the PS4 seems to have been hamstring by the underpowered Xbox.

With the sales of the PS4 looking so healthy, it wouldn't make any sense for games to target the Xbone first.

As the generation progresses, the Xbone version will go from the equivalent of PC high to medium to low, where as the PS4 version will be a setting or two higher.

why not? like with this game it just means any games made for the xbone spec should have good frame rates on ps4.

thats a win win to me.
And not everybody values framerate highly. I'd rather the PS4 was the absolute minspec for games going forward with much higher scene complexity.

So it's not a win win to me.

It's not that weak. Don't get sucked into the over exaggeration.
And what are your credentials? We know that Timoty Lottes knows his shit and we see the results in benchmarks.

and the superior console will continue to get better, as programming becomes more familiar. Because its superior.

So Gamestop told me the game had no street date and they would sell it as soon as they got it. Associate said he expected it in shipment tomorrow.

Best Buy was clueless and told me it came out next month.

Was hoping to impulse purchase it today, Oh well.

Any chance PSN will update today, lol?

you do realize watching on youtube doesn't count?

For every other sequence, we see a consistent delta of 10fps in the PS4's favour; from the docking of a rainy, battle-torn Singaporean beach to the ripping in half of an airship carrier. At its peak, the PS4 takes up to a 16fps lead also, leaving the Xbox One stuttering along in the face of alpha effects during the Baku mission's towering explosions. Let there be no doubt that the PS4 has a huge advantage in frame-rate and overall smoothness of control, then - just one which doesn't satisfactorily translate to the multiplayer side.

Weak is a subjective teem, but you have to view the performance of a device against its rivals. Compared to a decent gaming PC, the Xbone is woefully underpowered. Compared to its nearest rival the PS4, the on paper specs and games released so far have shown a big gulf between consoles.

At the moment, the PS4 can just about compete with a high end PC. The Xbone can't. To play the next gen games available on PS4 and PC, the Xbone version takes a huge hit, either in resolution, frame rate, effects, or a combination of all of them.

So yeah, the Xbone is weak.

I kind of agree, in a way, that it doesn't matter as much as 'we' think it should. It's not that resolution/framerate aren't nice to know and can be important, like Jason pointed out, but there are more important things we should worry about that would improve the industry a lot more - better stories, better characters, more varied gameplay, less 'cloned' games, etc...

It's not really surprising though, if you look at what dominates the 'real' news. Today for example - what's the top story on CNN right now...the uprising in Ukraine? No, that some Canadian douchebag celeb got an impaired. That's what people think is important, so that's where the ratings/hits are. Pissing match after pissing match about which console runs the game better gets more hits than anything else. Like Jason pointed out, sites CAN cover both aspects, but it's pretty clear which gets a lot more attention. Unfortunately that's really our fault, since we're the ones generating the hits.

The funny part is that in complaining about reporting on what matters, they are also reporting on what they think doesn't matter and are getting hits because of it. It deflates the whole greater than thou attitude of the piece when they just happened to release this article the day after this news comes out, despite Laura and her "androcentric" video game existing for months. Definitely agree with "news" reporting being generally terrible, but tis the nature of our species. We like drama, we like entertainment, and we like controversy that has a direct affect on our lives. It's not unique to this medium, so using this as an argument for why graphical comparison pieces shouldn't exist seems largely irrelevant to the actual audience of those articles. It would be like TMZ releasing an article making the argument that celebrity drama is largely irrelevant to the evolution of narrative in film.

Seeing what a mediocre game can evoke in such a short time here on GAF, I am really looking forward to the big releases this year.

Good times ahead.

So is this *mostly* due to the paltry 32 MB of RAM, or simply an issue of raw horsepower?
I would be shocked if the PS4 is just straight up 100% faster than the XBOX 1. The FLOPS difference is not nearly that large.
