Phil Spencer: Still have flagship games in development; "new IP critical"

Speak for yourself, Halo 2 Anniversary and Forza Horizon 2 releasing this year are megatons for me and I'm sure it is for a lot of other Forza and Halo fans.

About Halo 5 coming next year, its not really a big deal since the Xbox One is getting some really interesting exclusives this year. And more development time isn't a bad thing either so i don't really see why it should be a big thing.

Controlled leak or not, it sure got a lot of people hyped which is a positive thing.

So getting an old old port of a game you already can get is megaton but getting your absolute new game from same franchise delayed a year is not a "big deal" .. Ok bro.

I never said it wasn't a positive leak. hell, that is exactly why I think it was a plant . It was aimed at grass root xbox fan and that is why it made perfect sense to do it in GAF where that audience is.

Again, it really created that positive vibe without really giving out any info about games themself instead of target dates that can change anytime.

But aren't they releasing new IP's like Quantum Break, Titanfall, Project Spark and Sunset Overdrive? Sure, not all of these are first party, but they are new IP's and exclusive. It's not like it strange to see titles of popular existing franchises coming out.

You shouldn't use Titanfall as a supporting arguement that MS is dedicated to new IPs as it would have come out anyways, MS just money hatted.

Regarding the rest I think it's more the worry that the track record of MS indicates that besides the innitial batch of new IPs you shouldn't expected more in the years 2016 and following. If QB, SO and so on will be successful you'll just get more of them but not new stuff which means over the whole generation you end up with something like ~5 new IPs from MS total including mediocre ones (maybe more, but I honestly can't think of more from the top of my head).

Compare that to what Sony did in 2013 for the PS3 alone and I think that is one reason why MS is more (and imo rightfully) critized for every step towars known franchises instead of new IPs.

The Halo news was boring? Yeah, maybe, but the rest of the stuff was good stuff. I was most excited to find out Quantum Break is targeting 2014. Huge Remedy fan now.

Quantum Break, Titanfall (though I do have a pc), and possibly Sunset Overdrive excite me. The rest is cool. I'll buy h2a,ill definitely get forza horizon 2, my interest in crackdown 3 is down after crackdown 2 but I'll give it a look for sure. But like many have said, these leaks are pretty vanilla. Good games, I'll buy them, but nothing holy shit inducing.

My personal opinion is halo is being annualized.

2011 = H1a
2012 = halo 4
2013 = console transition (aka not enough x1s to justify cost)
2014 = h2a
2015 = Halo 5
2016 = H3a
2017 = Halo 6
2018 = reach or odst or h4 anniversary?

That's rad if you like halo. To me that's... well, I'll buy them but not at full price.

I'm more of excited short term. PvZ:GW looks awesome. Project Spark looks awesome. Titanfall obviously looks awesome.

People, Halo 5 isn't delayed. 343 and MS never said the Xbox One game coming 2014 was Halo 5. They carefully worded the announcement so that it could be any game. Go back and watch the E3 announcement/trailer. People just made the assumption it was Halo 5.

If it's annualized with Anniversary editions then I'm cool with that. If it goes full-on Assassin's Creed then I'm out. So far so good.

Gears is tired but not dead. As for the speculation, look at the 360 for the last 3 or so years. It's been pretty much barren, what makes you think MS will suddenly turn around and change that? Yes, they'll have a strong first year but after that who knows. There are very good and legitimate reasons to doubt them.

And its pretty obvious why it was barren, they were focusing on Kinect for 360 and gearing up for new franchises and partnerships on the Xbox One of which we're already seeing what they have coming. We also saw them publish games like State of Decay, they did plenty of new stuff on XBLA.

Lionhead, Twisted Pixel, Press Play, we know they're on new IPs. They've said new IP is critical: Sunset Overdrive, D4, Quantum Break, Project Spark all this year (based on current leaks). They've put a lot of investment in to new IPs, Ryse, Crimson Dragon, Powerstar Golf at XBO launch. I see no reason as yet to doubt that they're committed to new IPs on Xbox One.

Also Mort, if you wanted a 2013 Halo game, you could count Spartan Assault.

How many Uncharted, Killzone, Gran Turismo, Infamous, Resistance, God of War, Little Big Planet games did they have last generation? How many of those games have already been announced to make the jump to the next generation? Sony milks franchises too, but the difference is the fact that they have more studios in total.

We're getting 2 brand new exclusive IPs already this year with Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive.
I don't understand how people can say they not committed to new IP...

They really can't say that, because it's bullshit. They have already launched with new IPs and have announced even more. Beyond that, we are only around 3 months in. And is it really surprising that they are also supporting their old and successful franchises for a new generation? What are they supposed to do, drop games like Halo, Forza and Gears? That would be like Sony dropping Uncharted, GOW, inFAMOUS and Killzone. Not going to happen.

Unless you have information you're not sharing with us about their line-up for the rest of 2014 (Ruffian or any other developer they're working with) and 2015, then how you can say its bullshit because one new IP is on hold/cancelled is beyond me.

Also, is Gears tired? Probably, dead? No.

I don't know this for a fact but since Ruffian did crackdown 2 doesn't it make sense they are doing crackdown 3?

Also I don't consider buying third party games to be fostering new IP. They basically want other studios to do it while they work on their cash cows. It's not a bad plan. I'm sure it will make them a lot of money. But unlike many people around here I don't care about what company makes more money, I just want to play games. What that dude leaked, to me personally, was pretty vanilla. If it wasn't to any of you, that's cool. I'm sure I like a lot of stuff you don't. Opinions n shit.

So before this leak you and everyone thought they were gonna play their shiny new halo on their shiny new console. And then MS big announcement was Nope, That shiny new game please understand and wait for another year, but hey enjoy this port of a decade old game............... SURPRISE

You really think they were setting it up for the above set up?

plus his leak didn't make sense. According to him halo 5 beta will come a year before launch which seems off

Well their "commitment to new IP" obviously is bullshit. Black Tusk's game had a lot of potential. Instead they are now working on a tired and dead franchise.

I love my xbox one. I believe everything that the new leaker said and I do believe that MS is pissed. I also believe, as someone with a very minor interest in halo, that all of that news was rather boring.

:/

well, their commitment with original IPs for XB1 is fine with me atm: Ryse, Project Spark, D4, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Max, Powerstar Golf and Crimson Dragon, are enough for me for the first year. MS also got some good deals with: Dead Rising 3, Titanfall and Below. they also got Gears of War, which now it's one of their most important IPs.

I also like their new atttitude about bringing back old IPs, I hope the treat older IPs like they did with Killer Instinct. we'll see how they handle the Halo ports.

imho, they're not doing bad at all so I can't complain, but obviously, the more games, the merrier

So what's your arguement then? We're not talking about milking franchises, we're talking about bringing out new IPs and Sony definitely delivered while MS did not last gen and I'm saying that as a 360 owner.

Well, you were the one saying that the leaks seem to be real, and one of them was Cloudgine doing Crackdown 3 for 2016. Ruffian's game is an UE4 Action/Adventure (which I'm not sure defines Crackdown), so you're probably in a better position to tell me what the game is than I am to tell you.

I don't have a problem with Microsoft partnering with studios and letting them keep the IPs they make, I prefer Microsoft to do what they consider to be best for them and the developer. If Insomniac didn't own Sunset Overdrive its entirely possible it wouldn't exist. I much prefer that approach personally to Sony's who insist on owning the IPs even for smaller titles.

Halo Anniversary 2, Forza Horizon, Sunset Overdrive and QuantumBreak is a killer line up for the holiday season.

I wonder what Sony can do to compete. The Order 1886 alone won't be enough.

Titanfall, PvZ, and Peggle 2 are obvious purchases, but isn't MS Studios more involved with the development of stuff like KI, Ryse, Dead Rising 3, etc...

I remember that KI behind the scenes video where DH was saying MS sent staff members there to ramp up the size of the development team. I wonder if that is typical of most MS published games developed by independent developers. If so, I think those bought third party games still have a lot of hands on time from MS employees.

Fun day yesturday was huh?

What I fimd interesting is how mant people believe in what was "leaked". Mainly Sony. If your rival company had there cards laid out on the table for the next 2 years, you could really pivot some games to counteract all of it. That comes down to how much you trust something like what happened tho.

of the new IP above all are risky and unknown. both insomniac and remedy last games didn't sell well and ready at dawn never made a console game before? Really interesting how these will pan out

A lot of Halo fans here on GAF were speculating this was the case since the E3 announcement, so it's no surprise to some of us that this might be true.

As for the beta coming a year early, I guess it would make sense if they were really using it as a beta with the intent to make real and significant changes based on feedback. They hyped up demos we get now called betas come out so close to launch there is never enough time to actually make real changes. If this is true, it sounds like 343 really wants to get fan feedback. Especially after the way the first few months of Halo 4 ended up.

famous obviously means long term commitment. I expect we won't see much after 2016 in terms of new IPs.

Yeah. My worry when I bought the xbox one was it was gonna be like the 360 in terms of having a lot of "moneyhat" exclusives for a few years and then fall into just having "huge" games and the kameos and lost Odysseys stopped coming.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that is happening again, I'm *just* talking about his leaks which was heavy on established franchises and didn't have a single new IP we hadn't heard of prior. But ms obviously has more in the pipe than just what this guy leaked.

Yes, MS does help out teams quite a bit (much like sms does for sony). Capcom Vancouver got a lot of help from MS to get dr3 ready for launch. You're absolutely right that they deserve credit for that.

it was clear as a day especially with them confirming that halo was coming this fall that everyone and there mother were expecting to play a shiny new halo on their shiny new system.

You can't argue with fact. This is exactly what happened. if you want to justify delay for whatever reason, that's fine. but people were expecting Halo 5 not a decade old port.

The lackluster reception of Ryse is probably going to cement the Xbox as a Halo / Gears / Titanfall / CoD / BF factory for this entire gen.

Can't say they didn't try new IP.

Yep, Ryse was the only hope... let's all pack up and go home!
Cancel Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break and all of the unannounced... shows over!!!

Neither company has a huge hit on their hands unless Sony gets uncharted out. I do agree that sales aside (which, seriously, fuck sales bickering) that what we know as of now has more exclusives I want to play on the xb1 than the ps4. Which was also true of this launch, imo.

Sony has an absolutely jam packed 2015 but getting there they are going to have to lean really heavy on stronger multiplats and indies.

I think you underestimate how big of a megaton Halo 2 HD is for Halo fans...
It's what tons of us have been wishing would happen for years.
My friends and I are more excited about H2A than Halo 5.

And that tweet is obviously purposefully hiding the identity of the Halo game, doesn't imply Halo 5 at all.

Yeah true. Maybe he thought focusing on 2014 or what "most" people want is the better idea. A lot of people are obviously still invested in Gears and Halo. While he talked a bit about 2015 and 2016 it's pretty clear we don't know everything MS is planning for these years yet. 2014 on the other hand is probably locked down with TF, D4, Rivals, Forza, SO, QB and Halo. Although I still expect QB will get pushed back to 2015...

Halo was known. A given for at least H2A
Spencer mentioned crackdown "wink wink" every 5 seconds

I'm talking more in roadmaps then Anything which is what that leak read as. A broad roadmap. I'm just wondering who took it seriously industry wise

2016 is a long way away. Who can really say with any certainty that we won't be seeing new and old IP's then? By that time we could be getting Ryse 2, Crackdown 3, Platinums game, Whatever Undead Labs is working on, Gears 4, and MS has Press play working on something too. They are committed to exclusive games imo.

Not necessarily; the original Crackdown included access to the Halo 3 beta, but that beta didn't actually start until like 4 months after Crackdown launched, iirc.
