I watched Robocop yesterday (why they launched this movie in South East Asia first?). I just wanted to say Robocop fans really need to keep their hype checked as the storytelling and action scenes are not as good as the original. Maybe the original Robocop was a huge legacy to be carried with but even when I went into the cinema pretending the OG Robocop never existed, the overall cinematic experience was underwhelming as I barely sympathized with Alex Murphy/Robocop, the villains were not as menacing as the classic Clarence Boddicker, and the ending was just anticlimatic. If somebody has suggested in previous Robocop threads that Robocop shouldn't be rebooted, you're absolutely right about it. The movie tried to be another Iron Man/Batman Begins clone while borrowing elements from OG Robocop but this approach has made the story really predictable and occasionally dragging the movie pacing.
More on the action scenes, every action scenes in OG Robocop was so memorable. The reboot featured nothing of what made the OG Robocop great and all of the action scenes sparked nothing of creativity or inspiration. I even found it lack of actions really because most of the movie time was spending on the building and psychoanalysis of Robocop, which really wasn't needed because OG Robocop did it in a very subtle way while the reboot has to tell every single details about new Robocop's psyche to the audience. The film immediately reminded me of that it tried to mimic the formula of Batman Begins but it just didn't work. Oh yeah, shaky cams abound.
Music: Yep, original theme was remixed and used twice I think but the main riff of the original theme only appeared about 5 seconds or so. I waited for the original theme to be played again at the end of the film but I didn't get any of it, though I only stayed for a minute but I just couldn't bear with the new theme (very technorock, not to my liking).
To give credits to this new Robocop, it's a better movie than Man of Steel but having said so, MOS isn't a great movie to begin with. The cast of new Robocop delivered good performances especially from those veterans like Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldmand, and Micheal Keaton. I also thought Joel Kinnaman gave a good different portrayal of Murphy/Robocop. All in all, it's a good 7/10 pop corn movie that will leave a Robocop fan reminiscing how good was the OG Robocop.
