Scariest movie monster (and the movie it's from)

I haven't seen the full length movie. but she was hella effective in the short film.

In a majority of the full length film she's out of focus or far away or obscured by darkness, but near the end she's a lot more visible and her design isn't as impressive when it's not out of view. What you imagine that she looks like is a lot scarier than what she actually looks like.

Cat's Eye (1985): the troll

My oldest brother HATED this segment of the movie that he'd complain it freaked him out. We were little kids when we watched it. Over the years, he'd get pissed when ever we mentioned the scene or poked fun about him being scared of this scene. Even to this day, I don't mention it around it....its pretty much taboo at this point.

Edit: It Bothered him because as a little kid, he actually thought it could "theoretically" be real, and it would "get him" in his sleep....and he had a dagger and could stab you in the ankle when you weren't looking down on your feet.

He's trying to steal Drew Barrymore's soul while she sleeps.

I was terrified of this GIF until I realized the monster was wearing a blood-stained bandage around its mouth. Its mouth wasn't some kind of giant torn-open hole.

For years and years I've thought that was a giant mouth too. Thank you. THANK YOU!

I can't believe it's taken nearly 350 fucking posts before someone posted this. That scene gave me chills when I first saw Signs.

My turn:

Eddie Quist from The Howling. I still have to partially cover my eyes during this scene. The best and scariest werewolf designs and more frightening than the ones in AAWiL IMHO

The original 1950's The Fly

One of the very first "Monsters" to grace my 8 year old virgin eyes and fucked me right out of a good 2 or 3 nights of sleep. Sleeping with the lights on was mandatory after seeing this guy.

Creepshow 2 crate monster.

That is actually from Creepshow 1, I remember it well because it also gave me nightmares. Creepshow 2 had the Indian, the nasty blob raft monster and the hitchiker on it.

Speaking of that hitchhiker, he needs to be on here.

To be completely honest, Mama's design starts to fall apart when she's not far away or out of focus
tumblr_mm3ibuOEEv1rcftp7o1_400.gif

I agree. The first half of the film she's pretty terrifying, but once you get a good look at her she seems much too stylized or something. When its just her hair flowing or you get fast glimpses of her face like the closet scene, she looked great. That being said, Mama was the first movie to legit scare me in quite a few years, granted I don't watch many horror films. It's just a shame it turned into some sort of fantasy/tim burton-esque deal towards the end. But man... that under the bed scene... the camera flash scene in the cabin. Great scary stuff.

God damn. Ghostbusters 2 scared the piss out of me when I was little.

Ghostbusters 2 is just a surprisingly scary movie. Especially coming off of the first one, which is pretty tame in the scares department outside of the opening librarian.

GB2 has:

1) The Photo development scene.
2) The underground train scene.
3) Ghost Janoz.
4) The bubblegum tub trying to eat Oscar.
5) The Ray/Viggo hybrid.
6) Janoz hallway eyes.

That movie came out when I was 9, but man, it scared me more than I expected. I was so excited to see it, too. I still love that fucking movie, though.

As Sartre noted in his contemplation on Hell in No Exit, the true horror is other members.
Alien Resurrection was a turd but the Newborn creeped me out:

The Creeper from Jeepers Creepers was surprisingly good. At first you think it's just some slasher pic, but then he's gradually revealed to be utterly inhuman. It was an attempt at a brand-new kind of monster, and it largely succeeded. I especially like the self portrait that you don't realize what it is until far later.

That whole movie was pretty solid. The main characters being brother and sister instead of romantic interests and the ending
oh god, the ending. The horrible, traumatizing final shot of that ending.
were a nice change of pace from the usual horror movie fare.

The sequel (where this pic is actually from) was okay.
should i see the first one?

Ive only seen the 2nd one, and enjoyed it.

I thought the Jeepers Creepers films were bad movies with a great monster design. I disliked the first and hated the second, but since you liked it the first might be worth checking out.

It's one of those movies where the lead characters make every possible stupid mistake you could possibly make in any given situation. I was actively rooting for their demise by the end.

Well the only reason i like the 2nd was because of the monster and it killing the annoying characters lol

Edward Scissorhands, It's not a scary movie or anything but he really scared me when I was young. Probably more so than any other movie monster I had seen till that momento.

johnny-depp-as-edward-scissorhands-1990.jpeg

I was scared shitless of him for years. I refused to walk past the video rental place when it came out because they had a life size cardboard cutout of him in the window. I'd leave the room when a Fox VHS was starting in case there was a trailer for Edward Scissorhands before the movie. When it was due to be on TV a couple of years later, I didn't go in the living room for the whole week in case the TV guide was open to the picture of him that I knew was in there.

I didn't sit through the whole thing until I was about 20. It's not a scary film but the bits in the castle still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

wasn't really a horror movie but when the guy starts peeling his skin and turns into a werewolf...fuck, as a kid i was scared shitless.

gifsoup not working for me atm

Going to second the crate monster from Creepshow (creepshow was AMAZING) and even the newborn alien from resurrection. While i never found the xenomorph scary (not its appearance anyway) the newborn was quite disturbing..

The thing is probably my no.1

Here's another one:

Mystery-man from Lost Highway

Mystery Man: We've met before, haven't we?
Fred: I don't think so. Where was it you think we met?
Mystery Man: At your house. Don't you remember?
Fred: No. No, I don't. Are you sure?
Mystery Man: Of course. As a matter of fact, I'm there right now.
Fred: What do you mean? You're where right now?
Mystery Man: At your house.
Fred: [pause] That's fucking crazy, man.
Mystery Man: Call Me. Dial your number. Go ahead.
[Fred dials the number and the Mystery Man answers]
Mystery Man: [over the phone] I told you I was here.
Fred: [alarmed] How'd you do that?
Mystery Man: Ask me.
Fred: [angrily into the phone] How did you get inside my house?
Mystery Man: You invited me. It is not my custom to go where I am not wanted.
Fred: [into the phone] Who are you?
[Both Mystery Men laugh]
Mystery Man: [over the phone] Give me back my phone.
[Fred gives the phone back]
Mystery Man: It's been a pleasure talking to you.

This one is from Mulholland Drive. I am not sure if it's been posted already or not, since I am too scared to go through the first two pages (I got as far as the last three before giving up).

Everything about this scene is masterfully executed. The way the man explains his dream and essentially foreshadows what's going to happen really gets you scared and tense about what the man will find behind the diner. When it actually happens, my heart almost jumped out of my ribcage. It was such an intense moment - and the funny thing is that Mulholland Drive isn't even a horror movie!

I like those Mama gifs
tumblr_mho7eswKdN1r59cjso1_500.gif

I have not seen it but people saying it's shit doesnt really motivates me to go watch it.

My fav's are The "serious" Freddy from the first Nightmare On Elm Street and "IT". I kinda wish i had read the book before watching the movie, i haven't read it at all to be honest but people people claiming it to be way more terrifying than the film is intriguing!

I also like the idea behind the Hellbound/Hellraiser Cenobites, thats some horrifying shit!

There's a corridor scene in The Woman In Black a bit like that Mama scene where the woman is getting closer to Radcliffe and as she gets closer, the lights in the corridor turn off. Movie was pretty generic, but that scene was pretty scary.

Signs Aliens.

Fuck these things. I watched this movie when I was 12, and for some reason it scared the shit out of me. That footage they show on the news where the alien passes in front of the driveway is still burnt into my retinas.

The alien in Signs really scared me in this scene.

I had the same fucking reaction when I saw that movie, me and Joaquin just yelled "WHOA" completely in synch.

How come no one posted the tortured girl from Martyrs? Am I the only one terrified by that part of the movie? That movie is so close to some real freaking things that happen in real life...

As mentioned already in the thread.. the old woman ghost from Insidious really stuck with me and created a few sleepless nights.

I just can't imagine getting scared by newer horror films. The monsters/ghosts just look too computer generated and they all follow the same "scary" movement, like going slow and then rushing towards the camera or victim in fast forward. Meh

Was trying to find that gif.

Yep, the first time I watched, damn man.

Yeah. I was screaming the same thing during that scene, "there is no way that's a real person!!" I guess the guy suffers from some sort of bone decease. He did the mocap for Mama and I think physically played the role in the short film of the same name (which I thought was a creepier version than the hollywood release).

Also for me...

Probably not the scariest but I saw the Werner Herzog remake when i was really young and it freaked me out. Especially cause I didn't really know what movie it was. The beginning opens up like a cheesy 70s soap opera or something. Slowly the movie gets darker and more creepy.

I thought the movie was quite good, but yeah that scene - I had a bit of an issue with the bathroom mirror for a few days after watching it (kept glancing up at it while in the bath), its a very freaky scene.
