Microsoft squashes rumors of a cheaper, all-digital Xbox One

Microsoft has no plans to build an Xbox One sans Blu-ray disc for $100 less than the current model, according to a tweet by Xbox chief Aaron Greenberg. The rumor floated up from the NeoGAF forums recently after Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) said that a white, employee-only version of the console could hit retail "waaaay in the future." When asked to confirm if a cheaper Xbox One with a 1TB drive was coming, Greenberg replied "no, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet."

Shame, because I would totally buy one. Scrap the Kinect too while you are at it.

But they are hardly going to tell people now if it is coming.

Aw, I might have actually bought that one since my XB1 would be for a few exclusives only. Still, bin Kinect for that $100 and we're still talking, MS.

Hopefully it's just the 'all-digital' part that wasn't accurate. Ditch that Kinect and gimme a cheaper box.

I wouldn't doubt that they ditched the idea because of the negative press the leaks got (notably and especially from Pachter).

They probably decided recently that there was more bad news surrounding their "Idea" of this disc less sku so they quietly said no to it and now replying that this rumor is false.

Somehow i feel as though, this can be applied to a lot of things both Major and Albert said.

A white xbox would be pretty decent looking, i wonder if either ps4 or xbox will go down the n64 route and make special edition consoles again, get myself a nice God Of War console or something lol

Why would he confirm this? Even if it was true, confirming this would be suicide. Of course he's going to deny it.

He really had no choice. Even a "no comment" is taken as a confirmation these days. Besides, these people lie for a living. They have no problems doing so, they get paid for it.

I thought this rumor was pretty dumb, I mean you expect the price to drop $100 with the removal of the disk drive? That thing probably cost them 25 dollars at most.. and the 1TB hdd would be a more expensive swap.

Im curious why they never went with the subscription plan thing that was rumored before.

You forget the video chat/voice chat capabilities? I thought it's pointless too and I'd rather still have an Xbox One without it, but I'm not saying a Kinect is just for navigation.

Well they have a $499 console in the market right now, obviously they wouldn't admit if they had a cheaper version coming later.

Well, thats some damage control after those leaks. We all know that a new SKU is coming and they need at least a few bombs for E3 after many have been revealed.

I don't chat with anybody online. Literally nobody. That's probably why I didn't even consider it.

His job was attempting to nail CBOAT to the wall, the leak details were secondary, and possibly need to be taken with a grain of salt ;)
