How video games are fuelling the rise of the far right (oh noes!!!)

Gaming cultures are connected to violence – but should be considered in terms of the rise of far-right political discourse and the prominence of “alt-right” misogyny and racism. While Trump is firmly on the right and the WHO may embody normative centrism, there is an aspect of gaming that should worry the progressive left.

Needless to say, after that it turns into a shitshow article that makes me think of this -

And the author (Alfie Brown, author of "The Playstation Dreamworld") secure in his convictions naturally doesn't feel the need to have a comments section to be called on his BS (always an alarm bell in my view when it comes to the thoroughness of position).

So how much of this is straight out copied from Matt Lee's Guardian article? GG truly seems to be the Schrödinger's cat of online movements. On the one hand they are a bot-army of impotent misogynistic neck-beard cellar dwellers, but on the other hand they put the president of the U.S. in power and guide political movements on a global scale.

looks like Brad Glasgo did a survey about why did you join Gamergate

Note: Its over 100% because people often have chosen more than one reason

Thanks Dunki, first time seeing this.

On another note, i wonder why this is still in the gaming section. Should be in off-topic IMO

Are you actually trying to defend pedophiles as being better than rapists and abusers?

You can be atracted to children because you were born that way and you never could do anything about it but NEVER touch or do anything to a kid. A rapist RAPED someone. An abuser ABUSED someone. So objectivelly speaking based only on those facts.....yes?

Video games offer positive portrayal of men every now and then? Truly "Violent, isolationist and misogynist desires course through games", true oppression right there.

I'm sure you would agree they should get mental help, correct? Because that shit is not healthy at all.

OF course it is not healthy and they will never be able to live a normal life. But it never was a choice for them unlike rapist or abusers had a choice..So these comparisons really suck.

Which is completely reasonable when you consider the batshit stupid gaming journalism. Polygon of all places is one of the biggest gaming media there is and yet people are surprised some have rioted against that absolute nightmare.

No no it's totally misogyny. Just look at this anecdote from some girl who abused her ex boyfriend and set a hate mob after him.

Yeah lol and let's not kid ourselves here and pretend that gaming journalism would just accept the reaction and go on, they needed to change the focus and remove the limelight from them and the current political hysteria made it easy. It helped that some of the people involved in GG were assholes, but then again you have assholes involved in every single human activity.

Some people were dicks on Twitter, meanwhile some of their precious journalists are in prison or were disgraced by being outed for shoving their hands down some girl's pants.

To be honest, I never really cared about the different personalities involved in this, because I still think that private stuff like this should be kept out of the public arena. I'm more interested in the kind of criticism that the far-left ideologues are raising at video games.

That being said, I always wondered why Gjoni's accounts were so easily dismissed, because to me it looked more like the desperate attempt of somebody trying to get out of an abusive relationship. Had a woman written something alike, people would have been lapping it up like crazy. I'm still amazed how quickly the usual suspects in gaming journalism took sides and rallied behind their crony.

Remember when people tried to dismiss the IRC leaks from her website of her talking about grooming her underage cousin? Some people tried to lie and say she was a kid when she was over 18 at the time.

Gjoni is the perfect example of why game journalism is scum. They've slandered him so badly.

There was also that one guy who tried to out Zoe Quinn for sexually harassing him and Phil Fish jumped down his throat. like a scumbag.

Yeah, that was absolutely one of the lowest points in the community, people defending her knowing what she did were 100% defending pedophilia. It's scary to think that to this day some people probably still think she was slandered and did nothing wrong.

I think games got worse once political ideas started to influence game design. Battlefield 1 having a ton of black people running around the battlefield doesn't help the immersion. The AAA industry today is tightly locked behind creative barriers and it doesn't seem to get better anytime soon.

I remember all that talk if the honeybee inn stuff should be in the FF7 remake. That is another example of how a fun scene in a game is questioned because of the zeitgeist. This doesn't make sense in my opinion.

I'm fairly old by now and looking back, developers were better off and made better games when they didn't have to deal with all that serious stuff. If a dev wants to create a serious game, thats fine, but don't shoehorn agendas into things that don't need it.

There were a tonne of black people in WW1 but in their own units mostly. Was BF1 mixed units? I have not played it.

It has more to do with armies fighting in regions where there would be no African soldiers. I saw a video that made sense of it pretty well but I'm on my phone so I can't look it up, might link it later.

Honestly thought it's only a MP thing so I don't really care. You also didn't have every soldier running around each with their own variant of a gun.

I just Googled it out of curiosity. From Wikipedia:

Most African-American units were largely relegated to support roles and did not see combat. Still, African Americans played a notable role in America's war effort. For example, the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters", was assigned to the French Army and served on the front lines for six months. 171 members of the 369th were awarded the Legion of Merit.

I haven’t played BF1, but I’m pretty sure I remember the Harlem Hellfighters from the reveal trailer.

By the sounds of it, they were there in numbers but didn’t see much action on the front lines.

WW1 was mostly fought by white men in the European theater, which is what BF1 depicts. Yes there were a few regiments with Indian and black soldiers, and there was that Russian female fighter squad, but those were exceptions rather than the rule. Minorities probably made up less than 2 percent of each country's army.

In the game though, many of the soldiers are always minority ethnicities. The British medic is always Indian. German snipers are always black. Russian snipers are always female. Maybe they patched it since launch and changed this, I don't know for sure.

Personally I don't mind too much that these minorities are vastly over represented in the game. I think it would have been better if there was just a flat percentage chance to spawn as a black or Indian guy regardless of class, but maybe that's too much to ask. It's just a bit weird. Like them focusing on the Harlem Hellfighters, when they fought with the French army (which somehow wasn't part of the base game at launch) because the US army was too racist to work with them.

Even units like the Tuskagee Airmen from World War 2 are credited with things that they did not accomplish. POC washing World War I was unforgivable cultural appropriation.

Oh black Americans? That was what I was wondering. That's bad.

Medics always being Indian and German snipers always being black is ridiculous though.

If it were whole units in the British and French armies then there were huge numbers of colonial troops that saw combat in real life. German too but in much lesser numbers.

This is the video I was talking about.

I think people are confusing WW1 with 2 which did have a lot more non white soldiers. WW1 was pretty much, to lead and modify a term black people like to use; a white man's struggle.

Over 1m Indian colonial soldiers alone fought on the Western front. The centenary was a big thing over here and we have heard a lot about colonial soldiers fighting for the allies the last few years. A lot of Chinese were in Europe too.

I see it mentioned ad nauseum on this forum. I have only seen it mentioned a couple of times before here.

What is it? Why is it so controversial? Why does it matter now?

Make me an expert on it.

Thanks!

I don't think it matters anymore as it is the talk of gamergate is dying. Or at least not being talk much as it were before.

People enjoy imagining different things. Nice things, Bad things, unusual things. These things that are imagined are not necessarily things that are to be believed as true. Some people are good at bringing their imagination to a sort of life that others can share in. Books, movies, video games. When we partake in the imagination of others, sometimes it will involve things that we've never imagined ourselves.

There are times when some will view these stories as "problematic". They don't include enough imagination for everyone to share in. A story, in any form, needs to include things that everyone can relate to. And if your story doesn't include these things, you are a bad person. There is some reasoning in this, even if the conclusion will stifle the creative impulse.

Others disagree, they think that the stories should be free to imagine whatever the limit of imagination is. To limit the imagination is to control. There is some reason in this, even if unbridled creativity is usually hard for others to find any meaning.

These two groups both want to be right. They fought about it for months and months. Feelings were hurt. Friendships were broken.

Ultimately, people who want to be right will find other things to be right about and leave the things you enjoy alone. I think they are fighting about guns or something.

So wait... I feel this video had to of left something out. But...

Guy and girl gamer date. They break up. Guy called girl a skank or whatever. Her friends are gamer journalists who attack the guy and the entire gaming consumers as sexist for her being called a skank or whatever.

Gaming forums split with many getting pissed off they were called sexist and saying they are not sexist while the other side is saying they are not the sexists and the other half is to defend themselves.

So then the side pissed they got called sexists by the journalists now are also pissed at the other side who tried to pin it on them as a defense also?

Is that the gist?

So pro-gamergate means you believe the gaming community is full of sexists and anti-gamergate means you think there is no sexists?

Um... I feel I missed something here.

No it was about how the games journalists classified all gamers as sexist and misogynistic while in truth it was only a very very small minority. They attacked the gamer identity (yes for many gamers who were often victims of bullying myself included was this a kind of escape from being bullied out of society). And after all these coordinated gamers are dead article it became really ugly. Gamergate never got a chance because the games journalists which some of them by the way were later also fired for being sexist assholes who harassed women in their workplace labeled them sexist and misogynistic.
