“Big boos can be defeated by sliding down stairs”

The first time I heard of this omg

Was there actually truth to the "if Yoshi ate a colored shell he'd lose his powers" crap in the manual?

In Super Mario World, Mario can fly through stairs. As long as he is moving upwards as he is passing the stairs, he will go right through.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa.....

Does this also work in the GBA version? Or just SNES?

this one I actually accidentally did because I was goofing off and couldn't find the door there lol

Damn... it seems like every year I learn a secret from a classic Nintendo game that I never knew before.

I wonder... is this also possible in NSMB?

I feel like Mario's movesets are often more expansive and capable than people generally know. I hope that continues.

That's Nintendo for you. Samus and Link tend to also have "secret moves" in a lot of their games.

I can't even imagine all the secret stuff you'll be able to do in BotW. These details are really what separate Nintendo from everyone else.

Yep. Like the Samus "Crystal Flash" energy recharge in Super Metroid.

Your reserve tanks must be empty, you must have at least 10 missiles, 10 super missiles and 11 power bombs and your energy must be under 50. Once this is done, set a power bomb, but when you do, hold down L, R, Down and X and keep it held down until Samus becomes surrounded in a ball of energy, which will re-fill all your energy tanks.

I remember discovering that as a kid and wondering "WHY THE HELL DOES THIS WORK??"

GAF secretly needs a mario tech thread. Time to make the discord

This one I knew because I accidentally went up through the stairs and was trying to find a way back.

What? Wait...

“Big boobs can be defeated by sliding down stairs”

What? Oh, wait...

Oh. What? Wait. WHAT!?

I remember when I used the Storm secret move at an arcade on X-Men: Children of the Atom.

I managed to sell it for a bunch of coins... :)

Why have a missed so much when I was a kid. Granted that is quite a specific way to do it that most would never figure it out. Was how to do it shown in a Nintendo Power or was it discovered by players somehow?

I might be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure I did this as a kid. At first seeing the image it was a bit surprising, but then I was like ...I used to this all the time.

This is witchcraft.

As I kid I always wondered what this random star block was all about. There's only a handful in the game and they spit out a power up like a standard yellow question block:

Turns out if you collect 30 stars before you hit it, you get a 1UP mushroom. I had no idea...

(Yeah ok, it was in the manual, but I borrowed it from a friend so never saw it)

There's also speaker blocks in the game explaining this

Are you fucking kidding me, this thread keeps delivering! That's gotta be perfect RNG though right?

Nope. As long as you hit the block with the cape without allowing Mario to touch the block you will get a 1up every time. I remember getting the tip out of a magazine or book when the game was in its prime.
