$1.6 Million Battlefield 3 Console Tournament Announced

lol so fucking stupid.

Throwing a 1.6 million tournament for a game that doesn't even have a competetive scene on the platform. It's like betting 1.6 million on 2 kids wrestling each other.

The majority of players are going to be on consoles, so they aren't going to have any problems finding a competitive scene there.

No. Just no. There is no way in hell that the comp scene will have matured that far with a BF game on consoles to justify a 1.6 mil prize pool. CoD or Halo maybe but not BF. I'm talking hardcore CS, SC2 or MOBA comp scenes, not codbro playing with his flatmates every night.

BF3 on consoles will not have a comp scene.

Trying to one up Valve I take it. How much more is the pool then Valve's Dota 2?

NM...winner takes 1.6 million...so unless there's no money for 2nd or 3rd place, this will be a larger payout..

I can think of at least 15 rude responses to this, but I think a simple, ambiguous "lol" will do.

You can ignore competitive Halo tournaments all you want but they have been going strong for many years regardless of the fact that it's almost an entirely console exclusive franchise.

Halo says hello.
As a Halo player, i say Halo is not interesting to watch.
...
But then maybe that's just me. I don't care about watching stuff, i want to take part of them or read about them...

As a console player, i wonder why Battlefield. It is really a PC game (that said, we console people are absolutely allowed to enjoy it).

I just don't understand why they are leaving the PC version out. I think that is the real issue, and not the fact that they're doing a competition with the console version. If they included the PC version alongside it, nobody would have batted an eyelid.

The PC isn't included because Virgin Gaming only supports the PS3 and 360.

What's with all the console/console gamer bashing? I understand that it should be a PC tourney but why shit on anybody but EA for that? I thought all of this master race stuff would become funny once I started gaming on a PC but it didn't. I don't know. Just seems lame to constantly separate the members of our hobby. :/

Because sales are greater on the consoles platforms, end of story.

People actually offended by this are being silly.

Welcome to GAF I'm afriad.

This.

I'm sure eventually they'll be doing tournaments for the PC version, just not with Virgin. It'd be incredibly silly not to.

I would prefer if it was top team to win 1.6M instead of top player, I mean, it is a team game. It's not like I'm saying this because I have no chance of winning without the help of GAF.

Who is offended? It just takes any real interest out of it. It'd be like watching a SSF4 AE tournament with players restricted to NES pads.

I dont think anyone is bitter, more bemused!

Valve flew the best dota teams in the world to gamescon, and let em battle it out in a 4 day or so tournament.

And now everyone is copying their style but not as well >.<

Hows that?

I really enjoy playing shooters on console and their is a huge difference between good players and shit players.

Tournament will just be as exciting / boring as it would be on PC.

It's a console tournament because like it or not that's where the FPS money/attention is now. It's just a pill me and the rest of the PC master race will have to swallow because while I'm sure the PC version will sell fantastically, this game will likely be colossal on consoles.

When I watch professional competitions I don't expect them to be full of amateurs.

Try playing a competitive FPS and then make a decision.

PC version has more players per map.

Also, PC version doesn't have auto-aim. I can't see any excitement watching an FPS tournament where the aiming is done for you.

To say all of the aiming is done by the game is really silly.

The aiming is done for you!

Do you think it is like auto pilot or something?

Also I played on PC for years (BF1942, CS:S, BF2 etc) before you start preaching about the difference.

Auto aim is a bit of a misnomer.

NES pad SF sounds awesome.

To me the interface places certain limitations on it.
It becomes slower, more about positioning, more cautious, it's harder to be that one man army and take down people 1v4 with 4 perfect headshots in under a second. You just can't do that with a gamepad against good players.
That is to not say it is bad. A slower more tactical play out of BF3 might be really neat, but at the same time I have to think a vast majority of the good BF3 players are on PC as well.

I'm disappointed it isn't PC, but I really do hope everything turns out well. More visibility and more legitimacy to pro gaming is good.
I'm mainly wondering about production values and streams.

I'm talking about an actual eSport.

Ok .... who says that this comp is for people like that?

Actually putting it on console removes 'professionals' out of the equation.

That is something I can get behind.

Auto Aim is obviously a factor that lessens the importance of precision, which is like the main thing that fps is about >.>?

It is incredibly short-sighted not to do a PC tournament, which would on its own entice more people to actually get the game Day 1 than not.

The PC is where the best and most dedicated FPS gamers are and 1.6 million is a good enough incentive for everyone to start sharpening their knives so to speak. Just the idea that the best may play is enough to attract a wide audience of participants looking for worthy opponents.

So much butthurt console haters here.

My problem with this tournament isn't that its console vs PC.... lets be honest, a game like Battlefield with its ADS and such doesn't benefit a HUGE amount from the added accuracy of the mouse.

The problem is the entire notion of a Battlefield Tourney...

CoD I might still understand...
Halo? Sure, competitive Halo is huge and only recently got eclipsed in MLG by Starcraft.
Competitive Gears would make sense too.

But Battlefield? Didnt take that as a competitive shooter... is it 4 v 4?

I hear what you are saying.

But isn't positioning, slow pace .... more tactical and lees 'one man army' scenarios more suited to Battlefield.

The type of scenario you are painting is a 'twitch' shooter .... which Battlefield is not.

It is unfortunate exclusively PC gamers are excluded.

But is that not the scenario for console exclusive gamers who play FPS when it comes to these tournaments usually?

Depends if they care about a pro scene or just want to sell extra copies to people imo.

Everyone on PC who knows about BF3 is already buying it and maybe even a new PC.

Right, that is exactly what I am saying. It might be fine for something like Battlefield.
On the other hand I enjoy seeing twich mechanics as personal skill as well as team skill.

'Best & most dedicated'

Care to provide reasons as to why?
