Core Themes in Your Game Taste

1. Mastery Through Challenge

• Elden Ring, Hollow Knight, Dungeon Master, Rick Dangerous—these aren't just hard games; they reward persistence, pattern recognition, and strategic experimentation.
• You're drawn to games that don't hand you victory—you earn it. That suggests a mindset that thrives on growth, resilience, and deep engagement.

2. Exploration and Atmosphere

• Super Metroid, Skyrim, Starfield, No Man's Sky—you love worlds that feel alive, mysterious, and worth getting lost in.
• You value immersion, discovery, and the feeling of being part of something vast and layered. You probably enjoy solitude in games—not as isolation, but as a space for reflection and wonder.

3. Aesthetic and Mechanical Elegance

• The Last Ninja, Turrican, Super Metroid—these are visually striking and mechanically tight. You appreciate design that's both beautiful and functional.
• You likely have a strong visual sensibility and a respect for how form and function can elevate an experience.

4. Legacy and Innovation

• Your list spans decades—from 8-bit classics to modern open-world epics. That shows a deep respect for gaming history and a curiosity about its evolution.
• You're not just chasing trends—you're interested in how ideas develop, how mechanics mature, and how storytelling adapts.

This is really damn hard when you have decades of games to consider. Part of me wants to list the games I have the most nostalgia for, and then another part wants to think of modern games that I've played recently that I enjoyed. It's really hard to say.

I guess I'll just list what my first responses would be in no particular order. Try to avoid multiple titles from same series.

Final Fantasy 11
EarthBound
Persona 4
Metal Gear Solid 2
Dragon Quest 11
Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
Resident Evil 2 (original)
Parasite Eve
Everybody's Golf Hot Shots
Gal Gun Douple Peace (this one is on here because it's a good one to show you what I find funny. If you really wanna know me, you gotta know my sense of humor)

That's really just scratching the surface. I feel like I could easily listed 100 titles. Tried to put in different genres and types of games that I enjoy.

1. Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
2. Bloodborne
3. Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)
4. God of War II (PS2)

In no particular order, other than which came to my mind first:

  • Guardian Heroes
  • Baldur's Gate 2
  • Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
  • Dungeon Keeper
  • Twilight Princess
  • Master of Magic
  • Tales of Eternia
  • Terraria
  • Xenogears
  • Warcraft 2
So I thought about it a bit more, and I'm going to change a few things in this list, and try to write down the games that made me the gamer I am today - who I am today.

  • Golden Axe. One of the oldest games I remember playing, and I loved it as a kid.
  • Master of Magic. Although I only played it for the first time much later, looking at my brother summoning stuff for his armies and blasting the opponents' armies with magical nukes definitely left me a lasting impression.
  • Worms. Damn, that was fun. Just... fun, and that's what I'm expecting from a video game.
  • Warcraft 2
  • Dungeon Keeper. These two are some of the first games I "owned" (as much as you own stuff when you're 12 years old)
  • Total Annihilation. My highschool self was in awe of the massive battles and explosions everywhere, and this game made me meet people that I'm still friends with 27 years later.
  • Baldur's Gate 1. I initially put down 2 in my first list, but this one was my first foray into cRPGs and D&D.
  • Link's Awakening. My first Zelda game, and I'm still a huge fan after all this time.
  • Grim Fandango. I enjoyed point and click like Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle before this one, but Grim Fandango is a piece of art.
  • Tales of Symphonia. One of the first games I bought with my own money so it has a lot of sentimental value, but after replaying it on Steam a few years ago, I can confidently say that the magic is still there.
There you go. Not all of these are my "favourite" games ever or anything, but they are some of the most important ones in my life.

1. Halo
2. Halo 2
3. Halo 3
4. Halo 3: ODST
5. Halo Reach
6. Halo 4
7. Halo 5
8. Halo Infinite
9. Halo Master chief collection
10. Halo Wars

Alpha Centauri
Age of Empires III
Street Fighter II Championship Edition
Shining Force II
SSX Tricky
World of Warcraft
Super Mario World - Super Mario 64
Super Smash Bros 64
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Let's see... Favourite games, trying to keep it to 1 per franchise and/or genre...

  • Donkey Kong Country 2
  • Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Final Fantasy 7 (PAL version)
  • Ape Escape
  • Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
  • Mod Nation Racers
  • Bloodborne
  • Hollow Knight
  • Deep Rock Galactic
  • Outer Wilds

It's hard to focus the list on just 10. There are others excluded that influenced me just as much but didn't fit or had a representative in there.
Honourable mentions:
  • R-type Delta
  • Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Guilty Gear XX reload.
  • Guild Wars 2
  • Golden Sun
  • Ace Attorney: Phoenix Right.
  • C&C: Red Alert 2
  • Baldur's Gate 3
  • Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Pinball Dreams
MechWarrior 2
1nsane
Multi Theft Auto
Live for Speed
Age of Empires 2
BeamNG
Dwarf Fortress
Mechwarrior Living Legends
Re-Volt

All PC exclusives it seems (or best played on PC)
And many are over a decade old and still getting new version.

1. Castlevania series (mainly SOTN and 3)
2. Mass Effect 2
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Baldur's Gate 2
5. Fallout 3 (not even my favorite in the series, but I feel like it is the most emblematic of my taste)
6. Streets of Rage 2
7. The Last of Us / Uncharted 2
8. The Witcher 2 + 3
9. Panzer Dragoon Zwei
10. Contra

Edit: Now that I think about it, I love belt scroller beatem-ups, but the ones I like the most have RPG mechanics and leveling and skills. So The Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom arcade machine or Guardian Heroes on Saturn or Dragon's Crown are more represenative of my tastes then Streets of Rage 2. SoR2 has the best 16 bit soundtrack ever made tho.

5. Battlefield Bad Company 2. (Thursday night boys night with young kids)
6. Hell Let Loose (So many hours)
7. No Mans Sky (Pulp science fiction made into a game. Many hours, ultimately a tad shallow but only after many years)
8. Hellcats over the pacific (curve ball for the youngsters, its why I invert Y axis though)
9. Elite (nod to ancient history, wireframe fascination for the primary school brain)
10. Descent (another nod to ancient history, something about the no primary axis gently massaged the brain)

Many more besides.

In no order :

Xenogears (The 2nd greatest JRPG at the time)
Final Fantasy VII OG & The Remake series (The game that got me into RPGs)
Persona 5 : Royal (The modern day GOAT of JRPGs)
Hollow Knight (Wasn't a huge metroidvania fan until I played this)
Sonic 2 (Was always a Sega kid growing up and Sonic 2 was THE 2D platformer at the time)
Knightmare (Classic Sony MSX title. Very first videogame I distinctly remember playing as a 4 year old)
Theme Park (Put countless hours into this game on the PSX)
Elden Ring (The best game of the 2020s)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (Just edges Metal Gear Solid for it's narrative)
