A friend brought the Wii version of this over yesterday and I scoffed at the prospect of even trying it, because
- every single FIFA game on the Wii had been utter rubbish, worse than even the completely outdated PS2 versions at that point
- the last good FIFA game was France 1998
- PES is better
- FIFA sucks anyway
Well, I had to eat some crow.
EA has done something remarkable with the Wii version of this game. Instead of chasing down PES Wii or the PS360 version of the game (and failing utterly and completely every fucking year since 2006), they ditched most of the simulation ambitions and just balls-out took it in an arcade direction, made it into something of a hybrid. Stylised art style with semi-realistically proportioned characters (think Grand Slam Tennis), but the gameplay borrows a lot from older classic arcade games, and newer fun footy games like Soccer Slam or Mario Strikers Charged. Slo-mo shots, effects on the ball, viewpoint changing to behind the ball before a particularly powerful strike - it's all good stuff. The strategic elements of footy are still in there (leading passes, sending players, one-twos, manual passing controls, controlling the keeper directly), but it's coated with an arcade layer (emphasising timing and quick reflexes in crucial scenes) that makes it oh so much more enjoyable to play than the rubbish that came before.

Ful disclosure: I haven't played the Wii Version of FIFA 10, only tried them up to 08 - which was more than enough to turn me off of the Wii efforts entirely. :loljlevel13 said:FIFA 2010 for the Wii used pretty much exactly the same system as the Wolrd Cup game, by the way. Every review I read seemed to trash it, so I skipped, even though I thought it looked interesting - I mean, I like the idea of a more arcade / exaggerated version of soccer. Interesting to read somebody finally say some good stuff about it though... anybody else?
jlevel13 said:On PS3 this seems especially laggy, probably a combination of not as many people picking up the game and that I live in California. It seems like the game doesn't matchmake on connection quality, but just on next available game? I'd rather wait a while for a good ping than this. It's unfortunate that it seems like people can't quit even out of an incredibly laggy game without getting a loss. There should be a couple minute grace period, or something - as around ten percent of the games I've tried to play were basically unplayable (less than half speed), 25% were extremely laggy - maybe only 10% of my games have seemed lagless - it's damn frustrating (maybe it's better online with the 360?). And I only picked this up because I was craving some online competition![]()
Toma said:Hm. I have the PS3 version as well. And maybe 10 percent of my games are lagging and I only had 1 game which was unplayable. I have another problem though. Its probably the fault of my internet provider but I can only start about every 10th or 20th random game only.
jlevel13 said:It sounds to me like a NAT problem... you're probably on a strict NAT so you can only play against other people with a strict NAT. You want to be on open NAT, then you can play with everybody, I think. I'm not sure how you change that though (I'm sure somebody here knows).
Yeah, it's pretty easy to do, but it differs for each router. So the router model and brand are needed.jlevel13 said:It sounds to me like a NAT problem... you're probably on a strict NAT so you can only play against other people with a strict NAT. Go to http://192.168.0.1 (username and pass should be admin///admin unless you changed or the companies default is something else) not sure how yours looks like but go to firewall(or something else) and find something called DMZ.Toma said:I guess Easybox a601 wont tell you much. Lets just assume I have my PS3 hooked up to the net and basically the only console I regularly use to play online. Plus my Notebook of course.
I would be glad for any kind of advice.![]()
I honestly think pretty much no one here bothered to even try it. :lolLkr said:how is the Wii version of world cup?
I'll give you a run for your money if I get online at some point. Parenthood is seriously hurting my gaming.AstroLad said:yep i played it a bunch over the weekend and really enjoyed it. went 3-0 in the group stage with congo being my best accomplishmentmade the final a couple of times but no dice so far.
just wish there were more gaffers to play with (360)

6m I think. And you can stop and pick it back up at any time. So I'll just play a game or two and come back to it later. Benefit of group stage not being a true "group" but 3 random people. Works out well though.Daigoro said:huh interesting. sounds like that could take a while. 5 min halves?
sounds cool.
Whoa, is that just regular ranked matches? I've been doing almost only worldcup and vs. friends. Did one ranked match but didn't see any of that stuff, then again I scored 3m in and the guy quit so....Tf53 said:They've tweaked regular online games as well. You play a season of 10 games, starting from Division 10. Get more than 16 points, and you'll advance to the next division, less than 9 and you'll be relegated. After the season you'll play a ranked cup (4 rounds, if I'm not mistaken).
There are no extra times or penalties until you get to the cup, so a draw is a draw. I'm currently stuck in Division 8, and with the amount of gaming I've gotten the last month or so, I'll be lucky to make Division 6 before the end of the WC.
Edit: Daigoro, if you have 3 friends who can come over to play the Captain Your Country mode, you should definitely jump in. It's a better game of footie than FIFA 10, and FIFA 11 won't have the same modes.

woodchuck said:Zoo magazine in the UK has an exclusive about Fifa 11. Full article is somewhere on youtube
My summary:
Graphics
- improved visual likeness (lol they say this every year)
- greater number of body types
- greater number of animations like Ronaldo's running style
- MULTIPLE SOCK LENGTHS HOLY SHIT PRAISE THE LORD
- Actual facial expressions on the players
Audio
- Can record own chants to play during matches
- Can assign entrance music to when your team comes out
Gameplay
- More difficult to ping-pong the ball from end to end
- Installed "Pro Passing" --> control weight of distribution
- Guys like John Terry can't make intricate through balls (I've found this to be the case in Fifa 10 anyway)
- Swerve passes, driven lobs, fancy flicks, through balls with backspin
- players prone to light stumbles and more collisions
- Player AI improved. Players will adjust to the flight of the ball and not just their own runs
- Goalkeepers won't have the same super human reflexes
Personality
- AI work rate will be like their real life counterpart (Dani Alves trying to get forward as much as possible while may be slow getting back)
- Wayne Rooney hustles all over the pitch while Berbatov is lazy
- Certain moves depending on personality (Tevez will do flicks, Drogba will muscle, etc)
Yeah, after the game.AstroLad said:Wow, in ranked people quit about 10000000x more than in worldcup. Don't even know why because tell me if i'm wrong but i think if you quit after 5m it's minimum 3-0 loss for you. Pretty sure i'm in the cup right now but I don't even know b/c I got 18 points in my 7th game then played what i THINK is a cup game and the guy quit, then what i THINK is the second CUP game and the guy quit. is there any where to see where you stand?
damn i was afraid of that :lol imo they should put it a bit more front and center like how they have a really nice setup for online worldcup. so far i quite like this approach to ranked matches.Tf53 said:Yeah, after the game.
Also before the game in the team selection screen. It shows your current Division and match.

This happened to me yesterday. Won like 14/16 including some World Cup runs and then all of a sudden it seemed like my guys were literally running away from any opposing offensive movement and meanwhile I was getting swarmed every time I had the ball (and not in a way such that it's easy to outlet). I bailed after two games b/c I just don't have the patience for it, especially if opponents are doing celebrations and watching replays for the stupidest 99%-luck boring-goal shit like a header that's crossed into a crowded box and for no good reason my defender who is right on his man decides to just sit there.Tf53 said:I've hit my traditional slump.
