How the hell do they decide the amount for these fines anyway? Half a mil cause of a tweet? You serious?

It was the substance of the tweet. Arison basically said some owners are holding everyone back...you know Stern ain't gonna take that

Stern is just upset that the amount of money paid to the refs during the finals didn't result in Bron getting his first ring. He's requiring the owner to pay him back.

Good management goes unrewarded. A system reilo can be proud of.
Maybe if your team was in the East they might have been somewhat relevant.

Besides, what does Outlaw have to do with me?

Houston should use it on Kevin Martin.

Or at least Hasheem Thabeet.

In news that will cause many Lakers fans to pop champagne bottles as if it were New Year's Eve or the end of another Lakers championship run, forward Luke Walton is reportedly considering retirement.

"One team insider said that Walton, though just 31, has indeed begun to contemplate retirement because of a debilitating back condition, with Walton himself telling ESPN.com’s Andy Katz earlier this summer that he’s seen multiple doctors who have advised him to stop playing," as reported by ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Chad Ford.

Lakers fans may need to hold on tight before popping the cork just yet. Walton is still owed $11.46 million in the next two years. Presuming his assistant coaching gig with the Memphis Tigers doesn't suddenly put him on the market as one of college basketball's elite coaches, there's 11.46 million reasons for Walton to resist hanging up his laces. The Lakers, though, may very well force the issue.

Should the new collective bargaining agreement entail an amnesty clause, as expected, all NBA teams will be able to shed one contract as if it were a Monopoly's "Get Out of Jail Free" card. There's plenty of reasons why the Lakers would most likely use that on Walton. Even though he got through the 2010-11 mostly injury free, his extensive back injuries could return. His triangle offense expertise no longer holds value with Phil Jackson gone. His lack of athleticism and speed are not good matches with Mike Brown's fast-paced offense.

So Lakers fans, hold off on celebrating for now. Like a championship run, these things don't happen overnight.

Wait, if he retires, lakers don't need to amnesty him. They can use it on Ron!

The story you posted had me completely on board till I read this.

Mike Brown's fast-paced offense.

You had enough reasons to suggest why we don't need Luke Walton, did you really have to make one up article writing guy?

The Lakers would never use it on Kobe and they never should. Jim Buss's stupidity aside based on how he handled this past offseason, the Lakers have always been loyal to their greats...it's the reason why Jerry Buss agreed to retire Shaq's number.

I'd much rather be mired in mediocrity for the next 3 years than just amnesty Kobe if we can't resign him...besides, the team botched 3 years of his prime by pairing him up with the likes of Kwame Brown and Smush Parker, the least they can do is let him stick around for his twilight, especially when said twilight is still better than 97% of the league.

do you mean re-sign or resign? as in quit. Cause if you meant re-sign, yeah.... you already did that, for $30M Per.

cutting Kobe wouldn't accomplish much anyway. We'd probably still be at or over the new cap with just Pau, Luke, Bynum, Odom and Blake. We'd just be a 45 win team instead of a 55 win team.

Some solid players to be had for on the cheap after the amnesting is done. Richard Jefferson for a couple million wouldn't be bad. And hell, I'd take Rashard back on the Magic for the minimum considering his help defense is KG-like compared to Brandon Bass.

....not only is this attempt at a joke confusing (so Stern paid a ref off to win Bron a ring but is asking for the owner of the Miami Heat to pay him back? what?) but even if it were somehow executed properly, it would be terrible and not up to the standards of this thread.

urgh

Kanter, Jeremy Evans, and probably CJ playing in the Jazz game, $30 for tickets sucks though. Hayward and Burks won't, they're playing and training in Indiana right now.

Yes. He is asking the owner to pay him back because his player caused the Heat to lose the finals, ergo his money was wasted on the ref. The ref did his job but Bron Bon didn't do his.

Oh. That was the joke. That was what you were going for. Genius.

Someone please end this lockout I can't take any more of this.

It would save them a butt load of luxury tax money on a team that isn't going to be winning it all.... But that would be about the only reason. The thing buss would have to weight up is... how much money does having Kobe on the lakers generate vs how much does he cost?

Hey, did you guys hear that Kobe was a classy player and did everything in his heart and soul to help the Lakers win every season? DID YOU!?

More like "didnt show up to the most important meeting of my career, going to McDonald's like Lebron"

Would not hit that

I meant re-sign. If we could amnesty him, pay him the 90 million over 7 years plus sign him for like 1 million per and not have the 30 million per season he's currently owed count against the cap...than yea I would be all for that. But the amnesty clauses won't seem to allow you to re-sign your own player after you amnesty them for obvious reasons...so then it's not worth ditching Kobe for any reason.

As I said, I'd much rather be a contender and not win or even be mediocre for the next few years than drop Kobe in his twilight.

You can't re-sign players you amnestied to avoid that exact situation.

The heat would instantly amnesty LBJ / Bosh.

According to multiple league sources, commissioner David Stern was lobbied by some of Arison's fellow owners to levy the stiff fine. Arison and several of his peers have been at growing odds as the lockout has deepened -- a rift which spilled over into cyberspace last week.

lol i wonder who...
