The Source Engine just keeps on giving. Almost 10 years old and it still looks great to this day.

How the hell does this look so good? Mods? And if so can you list which ones and where to get 'em?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

You're my new best friend, guy. This is Cinematic mod. A guy named FAKEFACTORY said, "Fuck it, I'll make HL2 into my dreamworld", and redid pretty much everything. Great mod, IMO, and complete crap in the opinions of most GAFFERS.

Here's the dude's website.

Beware, it's a huge download. The mod doesn't affect your HL2 games, but borrows from their folders, so make sure you have HL2, episode 1 and episode 2 installed.

Also when you post screenshots of it, do this

There's like three people here who like the mod.

On to the topic!

Looks fantastic. FakeFactory is a 1 man army. The MOD also vastly enhances gameplay. I.E. thanks to Irinsights you can easily do a no HUD run. Plus the AI is vastly superior to the original. It also features location based damage in the player character.

It's up to the user, you can have it really close to canon or as outrageous as you can imagine.

Note: Witchfinder if you don't want to bother with new HD models, i think theres a lite version of the mod. You can save some gigabytes.

Great Monster Hunter shots Wanny. I could never try Dolphin because I didn't find a way to properly rip my DVDs, but damn if I'm not impressed every time I see what it's capable of.

Yea it's a great emulator. There is a lot of SweetFX in those shots tho. Otherwise it's bit bland.

that actually looks kind of nice.

I don't see why anyone would bash Cinematic Mod after this pic. I mean, just turn off lens flares, dust filter and Pornstar Alyx and you're good to go no?

That's how most ENBs are by default anyway. Tits and blurs.

I've said it before and I don't want to dwell too much so I'll make this short but it's not really the graphics themselves but rather the fact that FF totally ruins the atmosphere that was intended in so many levels by adding unnecessary stuff where it has no place. Think Lucas and placing that rock in front of R2D2 or all the clutter he added on Tatooine.

Cinematic Mod is a mixed bag to me. I think the work done is impressive from a technical and a dedication standpoint. I think that actually having hatred for a mod like this or saying the original game is perfect is a bit overly nostalgic. I think Half-life 2 is quite a good game, with some negative aspects. And of course that's super generic and describes most any game.

I don't like the mod's character model changes, and I don't like the strange modern graffiti (if I recall correctly it has memes in the graffiti, and someone got banned for posting a picture of one with porn in it).

However, looking at this picture for example, I'm not sure the picture on the left speaks as much to me of artistic vision as it does of limited resource budget. If higher end computers and better effects had been available to the level designers then, would they have done things the same? Was their vision truly perfect and realized perfectly, or were certain texture or level design aspects the result of the limitations of the time? I think it's interesting to see the changes, and this particular shot looks pretty decent to me.

Why the bridge? Why those trees in the backgound? This mod just ruins Valve's artistic vision, I'm ok with hi res textures and fancy effect but not this kind of changes.

I see nothing wrong with trying to visually improve a game that is almost a decade old. I see what you're saying though. I'm always bitching at Wanny for trying to add color to the Fallout games. But his shots are stunning none-the-less. It's like he replied: "To each his own."

Why trees outside? What?

Combine hates trees. SHOCKING RIGHT?!

The art style of vanilla HL2 is why it continues to look good, even if it's not pushing photorealism.

I really should finish playing those games some day. I never got around to the episodes.

:D The trees in HL2 are leafless in that area, it can transmit a certain desolation or if you don't want to read too much into that you could say it's autumn or something. The thing is, those specific trees were put there for a reason. This mod instead has the same trees we later see high in the mountains.

The same with the bridge. Having a bridge there implies that one can easily reach that place by car for instance, and doesn't seem so isolated has in HL2. The story i'm building in my head according to my experience in game changes drastically with this changes.

o_O! Stunning.

No wonder the game hit a the end of the console cycle. It took then thousands of hours to render all those objects. Kind of a waste, i mean can you use a stick of bread to shoke someone to dead?

The garlic looks insane, most advanced garlic rendering seen in any game.
