That's just the money if you win a medal. The fact is the support for local athletes is in a deplorable state. Our local rower who qualified for the Rio Olympics had to use her own savings and needed crowdfunding to support her training. It is just a shame.
That sounds awful, what country?

The medal ceremony was hilarious. When they handed out the silvers it looked like Schooling was a tag along extra in a normal medal ceremony for the 3 winners. :)

Were there any good beach volleyball games worth catching up on today? I know the US women play tonight, but I wouldn't mind watching some of the other interesting matches

Im amazed that there is no one watching the athletism first day. The stadium seems empty. I have never seen a summer olympic games with this kind of attendance, you can see empty seats in almost any event.

Its so pathetic to see every time they zoom out the cameras

The quarters for the women's soccer Brazil match is packed on the other hand.

Just read about the 100 butterfly. Schooling swam better than at his SF and the 3 way tie was great. SG has struggled to gain traction in any medals in Olympic sport for a long time so gold must be especially satisfying.

The tickets are expensive for most locals, so they'd gravitate towards sports they're most excited about first and make the most of their money. Also, it's rather late in Rio and they have to work. It's disappointing, but I can understand it.

Edit- Women's 100m camera really likes Lgalova-Collio :3

this has been like the whole olympics though.

I laugh irl whenever they play the Star Wars imperial march in this Brazil x South Korea women's volleyball match.

So... For those who are in Latin America and own an iPhone 5s/6/6s or a powerful Android phone.

Get the Claro Sports: Rio 2016 app since it has every live transmission for free.

Watching Brazil vs Australia, I'm gonna laugh very hard if Brazil is eliminated. Looks like it's headed to extra time

This one? It's not available in Brazil, unfortunately.

I've been using the local SportTV Rio 2016 app and it's pretty great, but yeah, it requires a cable TV account.

Not surprising considering the extreme fear mongering created by western media before the event.

yep

-international media did everything in their power to scare people away from Rio.
-tickets are too expensive for most of the locals, who will favor their favorite sports to begin with (like Mobius 1 mentioned above).
-part of the country is against or doesn't give a shit about the event for multiple reasons.

Looking at the medal table after the first week, Mexico, Austria, Finland and India, among many others, are still not on the board.

Austria actually hasn't won a summer olympic medal since 2008. I wonder why it doesn't do as well as the other rich european countries with a similar population.

I'm also always surprised at how poorly India does at the Olympics. It's obviously a poor country, but with its gigantic population, there must be a middle and upper class in the hundreds of millions. They also have the facilities from the Commonwealth games.

When they include cricket maybe they will care.
