Either way, i'm excited. Tomorrow i will get to see some stuff and see the locations. Hope everything turns alright for the first day. Looks like the olympic hype is finally kicking off.

London was terrible for the money they spent, sorry. The only thing i remember from London was a holographic Freddy Mercury, that was the highlight. The rest was terrible.

Rio wasn't bad, the coverage by NBC was what was complete shit.

Rio was better than I expected, but London had Mr. Bean. Nothing could beat Mr. Bean.

I noticed NBC not having the balls to show lower half body area of all the samba dancers. Shameful, predictable, typical of america. Appreciate violence over the human body brehs.

You will have to extract it from his body with your bare hands.

This can't be real can it? I knew American media was prudish but this would be hilarious.

Yes that was my perception. They barely showed the most visual important part of the body when doing the samba, when the camera filming the middle passageway when all the different samba schools came. From what I remember, they did show decent amount of dancers on that stage doing whatever dance, including the samba. There was a couple of nice women doing their thing and thats about it. No zooming or anything. During the time, NBC had the gall of showing what looked like a couple American athletes trying to samba but failing miserably for a good 10-15 seconds. I know its an American broadcast but that was cringe worthy.

Edit-for short nbc cameramen are trash lol

I'm on the west coast so I just finished watching the entire opening ceremony.

I thought it was pretty good considering the resources they were able to put into it. It had heart. But I do think the pacing was off. It kind of dragged in certain parts.

Beijing still remains the gold standard in terms of spectacle. I think Tokyo might be able to challenge it in for years but there are few nations that have the resources and manpower to pull off something comparable to Beijing. Though I think Rio might be the new Silver standard.

I saw up to the Athlete's parade before falling asleep and wasn't bowled over: nice messages, ideas and imagery but it didn't all click together for me. Not sure what it was. But I know that was a lot more to come, so looking forward to seeing the second half.

caught little of the opening ceremony cause I was at a con but they the thing showing on one of the TVs in the hotel. When they did the countries parade, I saw a bunch of people gathered in front of one of the TVs and made small bets/guesses on how many athletes would be representing their respective country. Found that to be a little weird

Read that swedish reporters were kidnapped in Rio. Never been happier to watch the olympics by distance. Hell if I'd go to that fucking city.

I will try to go to Tokyo in 4 years tho. Safest big city in the world.

Just don't go to Kamurocho/Kabukicho thugs on every street corner will want to fight you.

IIRC you can watch every event live on their website or through the app as long as you have a cable subscription, PS Vue, or Sling TV.

How on earth was it not broadcast live on TV in the US though? That's insane - it's the fucking Olympics! Here in the UK there would be unimaginable outrage if the BBC didn't show this stuff live.

Tried watching the broadcast on "old tv" but the quality was shit.
Just bought a months subscription for $30 to get HD on the PS4 app, hope it will be worth it. I'm not really a sports guy, but the few disciplines I want to watch (I guess only shooting, fencing, rugby from what I can recall) I would like to not watch in potato quality.

Same here, but I think the US populace has been conditioned for decades to tolerate ads everywhere all the time. The olympics are no exception.

Oh, I know a lot about Caetano and I love his music, but let's not pretend he isn't a Dilma Rousseff supporter.

So tell me: why he is "throwing his reputation in the garbage bin" if he is doing what he is expected to do? This is no surprise at all.

I fell asleep last night before the opening ceremony starting, but watching now some highlights it seems it was a great one. The torch cauldron structure was very impressive and beautiful.

Well done, Rio!

The rowing waters may be poopy but darn they do look good right now as single sculls is underway. Full skyline of Rio with the mountains and blue skies.

Sod the sport, I've just found that the off-air Red Button channels are showing the BBC trailer on loop. Glorious.

Edit: I suppose it's not a major sport - and only the early rounds - but I don't like how empty the fencing venue is.

Okay now the balancing act gets real.

Archery underway.

Fencing underway.

Handball coming up.

I'll keep open a few windows, both archery and fencing have medal events today, but not until later, so I can multi task for now.

Edit: Beach volley and real volleyball also coming up.

Anyone watching the fencing?
Are all three disciplines fought in a similar way? that is: one hit then reboot the stance? Or are anyone more of a fight thing.

Yes. The differences are on what part of the blade you have to use and/or what part of the body you have to touch to get a point.
I have a window open with the french fencers, watching France-Malaysia in archery too.

Hmm. They didn't show a lot of the Samba dancers but they did show full body images.

Watching a bit of archery as well, but I can't shake the feeling that all those things on the bows take away from the experience. Like, why not use simple longbows? Wouldn't that make it so much more interesting and challenging?

The rowing venue indeed looks really nice.

Unfortunately the Tron fencing arena from London is not back.

Forgot how it looked like and googled it, holy fuck that looked awesome
