Wow, looking at the rowing now, there's probably a real advantage in an early heat.

There's no 'fastest loser' qualification, is there?

No, all losers from this first round go into the repechage round and the top two from each of those earn their way into the quarter finals.

It's amateur boxing only, quite different from the pro scene.

Starting with these games, pros will be allowed. No more headgear as well. It will change the way the fight plays out and I'm more excited for it. It will still be 3 rounds as opposed 12.

Don't expect much of a change in Rio, but in Tokyo, it should be exciting.

I don't know why NBC is showing cycling when there are more exciting events going on now.

Because NBC is garbage. I think they got worse after Comcast bought them out.

Yeah, that's a problem to say the least. The competitors would be practially dead by the time of the finals :P
How do they do it in the boxing?

Amateur boxing is all about point scoring, not KOs or beating your opponent into submission. I guess MMA could do the same but it would have to be handled differently than UFC. Something to accentuate skill without the need for fighting violently.

Ah, I didn't know that. Don't know how I feel about it but we'll see.

Could they do something based solely on submissions?

Fucking hell, this handball match is hype!

Fencing is so stressful. That Rembi (FRA) - Gherman (ROU) match is close.

edit: 13-10 for Rembi :) Good result. I hope french fencers do better than in London.

They could. It all depends on what we all think MMA is supposed to be. Limiting too much of one aspect like striking kind of goes against the entire concept of the sport. But an Olympic category open to let's say jiujitsu, amateur wrestling, judo and anything else grappling heavy would be fun to see.

I'm officially overstimulated. I don't know what to watch!

Croatia seems to be better than the US in water polo, but I don't know much about it to say it with confidence.

They could do something like ADCC and Pancrase. I would rather they do that or BJJ (replacing something like TKD) and adding MMA as well. There is an International MMA Federation, which I think is recognized under the IOC, and they do have yearly amateur championships

Two windows - tight contests in handball Brazil - Norway and volleyball Korea - Japan

I got WP on TV, Handball on the app, gymnastics on the browser. And I wanna watch ping pong lol. This is too much, I need to start working again on money so as to not get distracted.

Impressed by the Belarusian rower here. Gold in 04 and 08, other medals at times, and qualified well here... at age 44

If the aim of these Olympics was to make me want to visit Brazil, then its working - the scenery during the bike riding and the rowing is gorgeous.

Happy to see Twigg qualify comfortably, especially after Brennan had issues.

I think I'll stay up and watch Bond & Murray destroy everyone in their path before going to bed.

LOL at our handball girls right now. Just tank and take this L and move on. We've lost plenty of opening matches and still won the tournament... but so far this looks limp.

Rugby7 starts in ten minutes!

I know absolutely nothing about rugby but I'm gonna check this out. I was watching beach volleyball on NBC Sports but I went upstairs to watch fencing on the stream.

35 events only two channels showing stuff and they're holding back popular sports to botch up in Primetime. This strategy is awful

Didn't NBC used to have it on all their networks like USA, CNBC, etc in previous years? They're not doing that this year? That sucks if true.
