Olympics operate different ticketing policies for the host nation and other nations and the host nation get the vast majority. Worldwide tickets go to national IOCs to sell on to people in their country. Seems like the problem with the empty seats is them not selling enough to Brazilians.

I'm from Brazil. The tickets were sold out here. No USA game had any ticket months ago. I got one by luck when i bought a game on the qualify before people knowing who would play who, but after the qualify, everything was sold out in 2015 already.

Nope. Most of the stuff was pretty available. I got to see games by buying tickets ten minutes before starting.

It's just games or events that were high regarded that got this problem. Track and field with Usain Bolt was the same shit. No one could get a ticket, but you won't see the stadium totally filled. Outside of the stadium you could get a ticket for 300 dollars minimum in the hand of someone less than trustworthy though.

The fact that they don't have to build a specific stadium (I guess they'll use Tokyo Dome?) must help. It would have been expensive to do this in Brazil.
