360 Elite problems?

Hey everyone,

I'm another on-the-fencer about which system to get, PS3 or 360 (I own a Wii). I'm wondering if any Elite owners here have had the RRoD problem, or if the Elites are indeed more reliable. Cause if they are, I'd probably get one. Thanks.

Jesus. You people act as if buying a console is like investing in real estate. How many threads like this do we need?

$400 and up is a lot of money to some folk. Myself included.

Elites aren't really any more reliable yet. The newer ones have the 2nd heatsink, but you may not get one as you can't tell from the box.

They also do not have 65nm yet.

If you want a system today, get the PS3. If you're willing to wait for MS to sort their shit out, the Elite will be a fine purchase soon.

Ive seen some being DOA and a couple of RROD but i think on the whole they seem to be more reliable...or maybe it's because there are fewer of them out there so we don't hear as much.

I dont know. If the games attract you get the Elite and make sure to pick up that in-store warranty.

But yea...what is with these threads? It's 480 bucks. You people pretend like once you get one or the other you will NEVER be able to get or afford the other system.

I understand that. But we get 5 threads like this every day. I mean, come on. It's like making a "What's the best videogame of all time" thread, at this point.

yeah, can't we just have one running thread? someone list all the pros and cons in the OP or someshit so people can just scan those and decide :lol

New Elites are supposed to have an added heatsink, which should (theoretically) aid in system reliability. Prior to that they were the pretty much the same hardware (minus the HDD) as the Core and Premium systems.

New smaller, cooler-runing and more reliable 65nm chipsets are expected this fall, last time I heard. Don't forget that you get a 3 year warranty too, at least if you're in the US.

The new heatsinks make them reliable.

Well, according to some reports, the Elites have extra heat sinks to remove excess heat, so I would say they are less susceptible to RRoD, but surely not immune to it.

The 65nm chips should be when the problem is finally eliminated completely. And maybe the power brick can be housed inside the box.

I'd honestly wait a couple more months and see if this "new hardware revision" comes to pass. Better to wait two months to buy a 360 and then not have to send away for a coffin.

The PS3, ironically, is incredibly solid. I find it hilarious that Sony somehow managed to get past their poor hardware build problems.

Assuming you can even find an elite there is a good chance it will be the 'newest of the new' considering how difficult they are to find.

Well I'm a full-time grad student, so $480 is a lot to me. Sorry, but not everyone has the same amount of disposable income (or rich parents to buy them shit).

My thing is, MGS and God of War are pretty much my favorite games. But the 360's lineup is hard to argue with. Only thing really holding me back is the hardware problems. I really don't want to have to be sending my console to MS for repairs.

If you get a 2nd heatsink in yours and they're still 90nm. 65nm is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. Personally, I'd just wait a little while if I was going to get a 360 so I don't have to deal with a 6-8 week wait for a replacement system down the road.

That's why I said, if you want a PS3, get it now, that way you get 5 free Blu-rays and the PS2 hardware BC.

If he wants a 360, he should wait.

EDIT: You said you love MGS and GoW and it's a lot of money for you. Want a reliable system now that will get those games later, get a PS3. Want an unreliable system (we still don't know what the effects 65nm will be) later on, get a 360.

But why spend MORE money on a system that might be more reliable hardware-wise but have less in terms of gaming content?

All 360s now have a 3 year warranty. If it breaks you are covered, if it doesn't break you have tons of games to play. Don't worry about it and get the console that has the games you want to play. My launch system is still going strong. YMMV but there is nothing certain about the 360, one way or another, when it comes to hardware.

Yeah man, i might wait -- has MS said anything about when these new systems will be out and how we'll know they're new & improved?

Sounds pretty normal to me. Sony = hardware business. Microsoft = software.
Experience pays i guess.

Original XBOX was not known for massive hardware failings. Does that mean that MS had MORE experience when they first came in but are losing it as time goes on?

I bought an Elite 5 days ago. It was built in June 07 and has the extra heatsink.

How can you tell the build date and # of heatsinks? Do you have to open up the box or is it on there somehow? Sorry if that's a retarded question, but I have no idea.

Nope, sorry. The current guestimate is sometime around Halo 3, but no one knows for sure. It could be November for all we know. There's bound to be tons of older systems already in the pipeline, so you don't know what you'll get, especially with an Elite, because the Premium model will most likely have HDMI marked on the box, which makes it obvious.

The Xbox1 was not rushed to market with cheap components.

You have to open the box and check under the system for the date and for the heatsink you need to shine a flashlight at it. Either way, you have to buy the system.

EDIT: Actually yeah, they have a little tab on the box that says lift here for serial number.

When there's confirmation of what dates have 65nm, I'd say do some research and then go the store and hope to find a new one.

There's a poke hole you can see through in the box without having to open it. It should reveal the serial and manufacturing date on it.

This is how Wal-mart/Target checks to see if you swap your Xbox 360s.

that's the ironic part, though. experience hasn't paid in the past. the PS line has been riddled with minor problems, that one would've expected wouldn't exist from a hardware company. the original xbox was largely ok. there were some issues but they were didn't appear to be any worse than the ps2, and for some revisions perhaps a little better.

Lift up the flap that reveals the system serial number. The date is on the sticker.

Shine a light through the vents at the bottom of the console (opposite end of the hard drive) you will see the two heatsinks and the gold/copper pipe that the new one is mounted with.

Since you have a 3-year warranty on the console anyway I don't see why not no buy one now.
Even if your 360 red-lights, the time you'll have to wait for the hardware revision is going to be longer than the 30 days repair time.

What Barnolde said. After doing some research on the web pretty much all Elites built in June 07 have the extra heatsink in them. If youre still concerned buy one from a place like WM, Sams, Costco, etc.... you get a 90 instore return at minimum. That way of the new models come out in the next couple months you can just go exchange.

Not when I went through four PSX and two PS2s it isn't. :P

That's a decreasing trend right there. ;)

IIRC, I bought 2 or 3 PS1s and 2 PS2s. My first PS1 died on me after surviving upside down for a year and a half after I got it. PS2 died after 3 and a half years.

But you don't know when your system will die. He doesn't want to be on the last level of Halo 3 and have the system die on him, then have him wait over a month to just finish his game.

If you buy it from certain stores like MechDX mentioned (Costco is another one), they will let you swap them out, which is another possibility.

I have an Elite from the the Elite launch. It hasn't given me any problems and is much quieter than my original launch 360. Not much more I can add, but perhaps wait at least until the price drop on the 12th or so.

Oh yea, new heatsink, plus 3 warranty=win. Supposedly the Elites manufactured in July or after are going to have the new motherboards, but who knows when those will hit the shelf.

I don't believe the Xbox 360 will die with the new heatsink.

So I'm guessing he won't have a problem with it dying with 3 ROL.

That's cool, but you have no proof, but it's nice to believe things. It's still full of cheap components, you just don't know. That's the keyword, guessing.

360 = unreliable, buy it later as 65nm is right around the corner and that should help.
PS3 = stable, buy it anytime.

get an elite. if it stops working or gives you the rrod. msft will fix it for free. 3 yr warranty sounds good no?

True, I've experienced that first hand: mine died during the Halo 3 beta, about a week before my Forza copy arrived...

You have no proof that the PS3 is reliable, too.

That's also filled with Made in China components.

The new heatsinks weren't in there.

yeah but the cheap components were never really the cause of the failures that most people have seen, were they? it's not as if Sony doesn't fill their equipment with cheap components either -- just you haven't seen a recent article about it.

The same can be said for all hardware. I bought my Xbox 360 in January 06 and I never got red-ringed. Only sent it in for repairs was because of some issue with the disc drive, and they hit me with a refurb that's still trucking with no problems.

Meanwhile, I went to play my Wii a few weeks ago and it was dead. No rhyme or reason, just didn't want to turn on or eject the disc anymore.

PS3 doesn't have this massive ****ing thread:

Again, this is anecdotal and does not represent the obvious majority.

Like I keep saying, if you want a system NOW, get the PS3. If you're willing to wait for better hardware, the 360 SHOULD be capable in a couple months.

I'm just saying, it's sometimes a matter of if, not when. While plenty of folks are having problems, obviously, there is that minority that hasn't.
