Thread going well? Excellent, how can we 'fix' that.

Hobbun said:To be honest, if it's going to be that difficult to make the 'classics' a proper 3D rendition, I'm surprised Nintendo is going to bother at all. I'm sure they will make enough money with the VC GB/GBC (and I know GBA eventually) titles. Nevermind I feel 3DS games are going to do well enough on their own.
Why do the classics if it's that hard? Especially if they wouldn't sell them at full retail price.
As I said before, I played it at E3, and it really is the perfect 3D remake. The fact that it's a vertical shooter where you shoot ships in the sky and also bomb things on the ground makes it perfect, as if the game was designed for 3D. In the past I've never been a big fan of Xevious, but I thought it was really neat playing it in 3D.From The Dust said:Nintendo has mentioned that Xevious is a remake. jett said:I've thought about this too. I frankly don't see the point in converting a 2D game into 3D. And like you said, to do it properly the games would have to be remade entirely from the ground up.

While they are actually doing 3D Classics, they aren't necessarily doing it with all those games. At the time they just said that was a tech demo, and most of those weren't playable games but still pictures.KevinCow said:Wait, they're actually doing this? Holy shit, that makes me happy.

No moreso than rereleasing a game in color or HD form.RockmanWhore said:Isn't it a little stupid to add a gimmicky 3D on a 2D game?
Does turn out pretty nice.Tathanen said:Obviously Yoshi's Island is the best game to do this to. Every layer is pretty well distinct already due to significant parallax use
Heh. In some ways that's almost as big a change for better-known games. And a welcome reversal from, say, the GBC port of SMB which lost 60% of the screen pixels.Big One said:You have to remember that these classics will not only be in 3D like this, but their resolution shall be changed to fit the 3DS' like a real port. It seems to be the case with that Xevious pic shown a while back, at least. It should be interesting to see how well game's end up looking to see something like Super Mario World in widescreen. There's already hints of it with Super Mario Bros. for NES in the very first 3D video released for the 3DS.
That is another interesting possibility, and would allow for "internal" depth rather than just between the layers.140.85 said:I'm sure someone has thought of additional ways to add 3D to 2D without having to dissect the entire game. Like adding a depth map for instance.
This is far from foolproof thinking, but if I was in their position and it was going to be such a rare thing, I wouldn't have coined a "3D Classics" name to differentiate them, rather than them just referring to them as occasional 3D remakes available on 3DSWare.David Dayton said:I'm surprised so many folks seem to think there will be a giant pile of 3D converted classic games. I really see this as being far more limited... just a few remakes, with most of the focus on the new downloadable games.

edit:
Heck, I'm not even sure how Mario Bros. would work - black background, side view, all gameplay is on the same plane...

Hmmm, maybe some Super Metroid? DKC/Killer Instinct might look nice do to the rendering perhaps?Mik2121 said:DAMN IT SON.
That made me purchase the app.
Do you guys want to see any game looking like that? I could make it and then record a video.
Add Pilotwings 64 and 1080 Snowboarding and this would be the system of forever.1-D_FTW said:If they ported Waverace 64 and did nothing but lock the framerate at 60fps and add 3D, I'd buy the system solely for that. Mario 64 with analog control, 60fps, and 3D would just be icing on the top.

The thing about three images is that it's compatible with both parallel or cross-viewing, depending on whether you use the left two or right two images. If you see one with just two images and it's not working for you, it must be made for the way you don't use.abstract alien said:I still don't understand why I can see these types where three pictures are lined up, but not the ones where there are two pics lined up.

If anyone has a pair of 3D glasses laying around I actually used Youtube's under-utilized 3D mode for some footage of WarioLand VB, and it looks pretty nifty:

Youtube's 3D stuff seems a bit wonky at the moment so if doesn't work try going to "Other Options" in the menu, setting up how you want to view it, and then reload the video.
Could you describe how it looks? For example, does the effect look similar to this:VOOK said:At the start of the video on the 3D Movie Channel on the 3DS there is a still of Mario Bros in 3D... it looks quite good

i don't care about the 3D so i hope they don't hurt themselves too hard over converting them well into that format. Just bring them there for cheap. If the 3D conversion is shitty that's fine by me.

It's quite glitchy but is one of the most effective uses of 3D I've seen. Great depth.

If you want to see the cross eye view then just hover over the 3D button and swap the left and right images.
K701 said:Has anyone that's played with the JP 3DS confirm that virtual console games actually have individual depth for different sprites on the screen? I always thought Nintendo would just make the whole screen 3D so you get the exact same image, just that it pops out. I just don't see Nintendo putting in the extra effort to actually make this all nice like OP would want to (remember when they said they could add stuff to roms on the Wii Virtual console, like online? the most we got was some button graphics changed from N64 to Wii VC classic controller, if at all cause I might just be remembering wrong)
