3DS 2.0: What's next for the 3DS?

I don't think it's that unrealistic - the Dreamcast sold proportionally far more consoles than the Vita has, and still struggled. The Vita is simply not selling.

There's a big difference between SEGA and Sony. Vita isn't the only gaming platform Sony has. Dreamcast was the only gaming platform SEGA had. To say the situations are comparable means you've neglected more than a few things.

3DS XXL.

I think Nintendo is entering their casual push mode with Animal Crossing, Art Academy, NSMB2, and Style Savvy among others. They're gonna try to drive that install base as high as they can with releases like these so more 3rd parties will develop for the 3ds while Nintendo turns more of its resources towards the Wii U. That said there is definitely a new Zelda 3ds game on the way.

That is one hell of a line up.

There's still some massive sellers to come (Animal Crossing, MH4, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Smash Bros), plus any other games Nintendo has under the sleeve (hopefully Super Mario 3D Land 2) and basically all third party support.

It's still lacking a new Zelda as well.

Hopefully they make a 2d/3d Metroid for it as well.

I want an awesome, ambitious, gimmick free 3D Zelda.

I also hope we get to see a new Castleoid with beautiful hand-drawn graphics.
Lords of Shadow just doesn't do it for me.

I don't think they'll put SNES games on there any time soon. They don't even have GBA games for sale. I get the feeling they're trying to milk the GB, GBC, GG, and NES stuff as much as possible now.

Every game is just an appetizer for "phase three", the onslaught of JRPGs:

Bravely Default
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Etrian Odyssey IV
Final Fantasy Project
etc

I'd like to see a revision with significantly more power, a second analogue stick and a 5 inch qHD OLED screen. Ditch the clamshell design too.

Yes, that's fine, but that doesn't mean Sony is done. Dreamcast was Sega's only console. The PlayStation consoles are still doing well. It's not as if the 3DS was doing well at this time last year, however.

If the Vita fails, that doesn't mean Sony is going third party. That's a silly conclusion to jump to.

Er, I believe the handheld marketplace is more appealing when there aren't two identical pieces of hardware competing. As it stands, each system has its own strengths. This is better for consumers.

In regards to system capabilities rather than games, as far as I can remember, Nintendo said they were going to integrate Miiverse into the 3ds. If they add in some fundemental friend list actions such as messaging friends and an account based system, i think it would be a huge improvement.

Vita is struggling but it's far from done at this point. Wait for price cuts. If it still doesn't sell then you can start putting a fork in it. Otherwise, I don't see why this discussion has a place in a 3DS thread.

While going 3rd party completely IS a silly conclusion, going 3rd party in a space they theoretically abandon isn't. Rare (after being owned by Microsoft) released a few GBA titles. Not saying that it's likely this will happen, just that it isn't outside the realm of possibility.

They need to expand the Virtual Console beyond handheld games. I want to see SNES, Megadrive etc on there. I'd be on my 3DS forever then. Make it happen Nintendo!

I wouldn't be surprised if major Sony titles like LittleBigPlanet make an appearance on the 3DS in the near future, if the Vita sales don't pick up.

Similar to what happened with the Sega franchises after the Dreamcast struggled.

Speaking of Sega a 3D sonic colors or a 3D crazy taxi would be excellent.

Sony's already kind of third party due to PlayStation Mobile, lol. But unless Nintendo releases an Android based phone they're not getting those games.

A redesign in 2014, please. Improved battery life, and better portability than the XL would be my focus.
A free and easy-to-use tool/middleware for download would be nice too. People should be able to create their own (simplistic) games and sell it to other people. A separate channel for buying and selling this stuff would be needed in order to not crowd the eshop.

As far as established franchises go, we still need Pokemon 6 (Pokemon + StreetPass = HNNNG), Advance Wars, Metroid, Zelda, Pikmin (dat stylus control), Picross, Pushmo sequel, Rolling Western sequel, Find Mii 3, Ace Attorney 5, Trauma Center 3D, Final Fantasy V, VI, VII remakes.

What made DS great was new series though, so I'm more excited by that prospect.

I really don't see them ever moving to a Nintendo platform, however.

If anything, they'll just push Android harder. I don't expect they'll abandon the Vita for a good long while either, to be honest.

Remember when Metal Gear Solid 3 coming to 3DS was a big friggin' deal? Y'know, before Konami decided to shoot the port in the back and announced the HD remakes, which are considered superior in several ways.

Yeah, I remember being excited.

Then I played MGS2 and MGS3 for the same price on Vita.

Yeah, I'd like to see the VC store be unified between the Wii, Wii U and 3DS. Let me just buy whatever I want and play it on the Nintendo system of my choice. This needs to be done.

I still love MGS3D. Sure it's totally unplayable without the circle pad, but once I got it I enjoyed it thoroughly. And at least it's an improvement from the PS2 version.

To add to the pessimistic post, I think NCL has announced all the first party 3DS games they were planning to create for the system.

Please tell me you don't actually believe this.

I mean, I know Nintendo has its problems with software droughts, but the suggestion that Nintendo has totally run out of first-party titles to release not 2 years into the lifespan of the console is utterly, utterly laughable. It's baseless paranoia.

If they did that we wouldn't get a decent portable VC library until the year 3000. I'd rather them focus entirely on portable stuff and not pad out the release schedule with a bunch of stuff I already own.

Looking forward to

Castlevania
Fire Emblem
Paper Mario
Animal Crossing
Super Smash Brothers
Zelda
Monster Hunter Quad
Pokémon

So there's a good future for the system imo

Yes it's hyperbole. Baseless paranoia, that's where I've come to.

I also said that Nintendo will probably release individual quarterly first party releases.
(4 per year) to bring my post back down to earth. Did you read the whole post?

Yeah, there are some good games on the way. We still hav'nt finished the first batch announced at E3 2010! (Paper Mario, Saints Row
lol
).

Agreed on the IPs from Nintendo we are waiting for (Zelda, Metroid) and the big names (DraQue, some other Final Fantasy) but I will add some Gamecube ports too.
After all, the 3DS is supposed to be close to this hardware (since Nintendo handhelds are two generations behing home consoles). Mario Sunshine, PSO I&II (the DS even got PS0) are good candidates I can anticipate from both first and third party.

I just want SNES games on the Virtual Console and a couple of really classic '3D Classics' (Imagine a Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Link to the Past etc). I really hope they up their game on those fronts, right now it just isn't good enough.

I'm hoping for an actual 3D Mario game. 3D Land was sort of like 2D Mario taking place in 3D in a lot of places. I'm hoping we eventually get a 3D Mario experience for the 3DS. With 3D being a huge selling point of the system (at least to Nintendo) it makes sense for them to do that. A sequel to 3D Land wouldn't be bad either.

Can't wait for Animal Crossing as well. Think that may be my first digital purchase from Nintendo on the 3DS as far as retail games go. It just makes sense to me.

I want a 2D Zelda.

I'd like a 3D Zelda in the spirit of a 2D one, akin to the DS games but without the touch controls. It's not that they didn't work for me, I just REALLY wanted to control Link via d-pad (or in this case analog pad) directly. Those dungeons in the Spirit Tracks one were just great.

That said, I REALLY don't want them to do another boat / train thing for the overworld. I'm talking good, true spiritual successor to Link to the Past.

Also, can someone take the NiGHTS franchise from SEGA and give it to Nintendo? Even just a remake of the original would be pretty awesome on the 3DS.

A black one is the big thing, I went to buy the nice Game deal last week, the one with a free game (I was going to get KHDDD), but it's not in black, and the normal colours are horrible.

That, announce TWEWY2, and EBA2, and we're all sorted.
