Fixed, unfortunately. You can also do it with the menu on the top left, but same problem, it always kicks you out to the front of the shop each time.

Yep.
-eShop
-Menu
-Settings
-Your Downloads
-10 NES games (need to be downloaded individually, so rinse and repeat)
-10 more Game Boy Advance games, by the end of 2011.

These games are hard! I want super guide implemented in them

Finding out I suck at Ice Climbers was heart-breaking, but at least I want to keep playing.

I won't even try Zelda or Metroid because I consider them fundamentally broken.

Okay, I bough my 3DS used, and according to Nintendo.com I'm an Ambassador, but when I go into the "your downloads" section it says I have no purchased titles. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Ice Climbers has one of the worst jumps in a game I've ever played.

I'm liking Zelda II so far, but one thing is really annoying me so far: You have to ALL THE WAY BACK to the castle when you get a Game Over. It's even more annoying since I'm on the swamp palace right now. It seriously makes me want to throw my 3DS across the room sometimes.

I'm also playing Metroid and doing a little better than the last few times I attempted to actually beat it (got Ice Beam, kept dying in a million weird ways, such as caught in the hatch with an enemy, and ragequit). Maybe I'll actually finish this time.

man i really want to like zelda II, but this combat is killing me. i dont mind wandering aimlessly till I find the next place to go, but these boomerang bros. and shielded guys are just IMPOSSIBLE to fight intelligently. the only way I can beat them is to jab randomly like a madman, and I still take a ton of hits when i do that. and jesus christ, am I missing something with the shielded guys, or are they SUPPOSED to block my sword attacks perfectly every time?

it's a shame because i feel like i have a tolerance for the things that ruin this game for a lot of people, but i just can't get the hang of the combat. it's not like i don't know where to go, i just can't beat the enemies and i'm trying as hard as i can :(((

I've noticed they kind of randomly move their shield. What you should really be concerned with is blocking them. Watch when they put their sword behind them, if it's high or low, and block accordingly. Just strike whenever you have the chance. They die in fewer hits as you level up more.

i'm actually really surprised at how those NES games look on the 3DS, I wasn't expecting much after seing the DS games all stretched out.

But people who did not actually ever play NES games will just assume some of them don't work, because even I had trouble navigating the menus in those games, until I remembered that START/SELECT was used everytime.

yeah, if i play super patiently and methodically, i can eventually beat those guys. i'll try grinding some more and see if that helps. any tips for the boomerang guys? i can usually block their low throws, but the high throws go over Link's head, i think, so you can't block them until they come back around the other side which is tricky. do i just need to use more skill?

can't speak for him, but the lack of map, inability to hit the numerous short enemies and starting with only 30 health every time you restart kinda killed it for me. i'm slogging through a bit better now that it's portable and i can just play a few minutes whenever i want, but it's pretty rough.

I have trouble with those too. I usually put on my shield magic if I have the MP to spare for it. Otherwise I guess you could try to jump, since it puts you only slightly higher in the usually small space it gives you to fight those guys, and maybe you can block the boomerang that way.

Zelda II is the one game of the bunch that I really can't stand.

Played/beat it when I was little so it's not like "zomg what is this?", but I don't want to ever do it again. That game is way fucked up.

My Zelda II grind area was here:

Against the weak enemies in these woods, they are easy to kill and give 150 exp a pop. That's 300 per screen. After enough practice, you just go into autopilot mode. And if you need to heal, the town is right there.

Zelda II on the other hand... amazing. The gameplay really holds up. I wish they'd make a new Zelda in this style, like Paper Zelda or some shit.[/QUOTE]

Totes. I used the same area :)
For me Zelda 1 holds up fine, but that's maybe becasue I grew up with games from that era. I've been doing a Zelda series playthrough this year and I'm now doing Zelda II (not doing them in order) and I have to say Zelda II's controls might be amongst my favorite ever. It has an absolute perfect feel to it, just the right weight and everthing. I really do wish they make a similar game again someday.

The Darknuts (shielded guys) are actually some of the easier enemies if you know how to hit them. Only the blue ones can go die in a fire, becasue they shoot sword beams. Just jump right in there and hit their head. Done, 100% chance of hitting him right there. It's the exact opposite of the bone guys, there you just duck and hit and you'll always get a hit as well. The main problem with Darknuts is their raw power, but hitting them is not the problem.

/edit; oh confused Darknuts with Iron Knuckles!

For the Iron Knuckle it's a timing thing. Your priority is to block their attack which they telegraph. When you see their attack, they no longer change the height of the shield, so when they defend high and attack low or vice versa you can strike. Other methods are to jump and stab them in the face, of do a crouch jump and stab them in the chest.
Remember, timing when to attack and when to move forward/jump is key in surviving this game, especially when you'll get harder enemies, because they all have a pattern you can exploit.

As for the Goriya, you can just block everything if you've got skill, but it's easier to crouch and block the low ones, and as it cannot defend you could kill it before any boomerang hits you in the back of head. Then is the time to block the remaining boomerangs of course.

Actually, would this be a likely candidate for 3D Remake? Its simple, it uses a TON of repeated assets, and its popular. Easy win right?

Nope. Because it's actually from Irem, who seem to be in business trouble.

Same. It's the only one that doesn't feel horribly dated. I don't know why I can't get into these games. I play SMS games all the time they just don't feel so.... meh.

So I decided to grind up my attack power at the outset of Zelda II yesterday and got it up to Level 4 with 1100 experience towards Level 5. I paused and placed the system down to go the bathroom. Came back and instinctively hit the POWER button instead of start and couldn't figure out how to get back to the game (the only two options were home menu or power off). Lost all that progress...but then started back up again after a few hours! Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

Ok. So I played these games for ~20 minutes collectively and I think I'm done. Like most classic things, it's more fun to have them than it is to use them. It was nice to play Balloon Fight and Ice Climber for the first time.

There's no expiration of when you have to download these by is there?
They're attached to your account as if you'd purchased them. So you can "redownload" them whenever and as often as you'd like.

Man, Zelda 1´s 6th dungeon is such bullcrap :/ Game just keeps throwing enemies at you. I only have to get at the boss now, but ugh. And I just don´t want to buy a potion, I´m sorry, but modern Zelda taught me that only a pussy would by a potion.

Btw. is dungeon 6´s item any good? It shoots waves, but why not use the boomerang instead?

I mean for the initial download, or are they already attached? I may not be able to download until January. I wouldn't assume there would be a time limit but just wanted to make sure.

The Dungeon 6 item is not needed to beat the game at all. You can safely do 7 and 8 and tackle 6 later if you're having trouble.

You can't even download them normally since they aren't technically available on the store. You need to redownload it from your download history even if it's your first time.

boomerang guys, just watch if they're throwing high or low. block and attack.
shielded guys, simply aim for their head. this works even if u have no headroom.

I was pretty much aimlessly playing Zelda 1 for the past two days. I then looked online and realized I missed the Raft in Level 3.

Why would they make an item essential to progress skippable? I'm loving the game, but I guess I'm fine now looking up what to do next so I don't pull my hair out.

The lack of map can be frustrating, but getting the first few items isn't really hard because there's just so many ways you can go, and after that it becomes even more linear. You can kill all this short enemies with bombs, wave beam and even the screwattack can help you. Starting with 30 health is bullshit though.

But really, the only harsh part is the first 20 minutes. And Zelda is a treat to play today as well. As for Zelda 2 combat just focus on high and low attack, all enemies telegraph their attacks. And use the shield magic whenever you're fighting tough shit.

Boomerang guys will hit you from your back if you're far away and frontally if you're close, so get on hitting distance as fast as you can.

Buy a potion, this isn't modern Zelda. And I find Level 6 to be the hardest so you can do that later. And magic wand deals frontal damage like your sword beam, whereas boomerang freezes enemies and can shoot in more directions. It's your call on which to use.

He deserves to suffer if he refuses to use things in the game "just because".

This is just a theory, but it's possible the system qualified for Ambassador status, but the original owner unlinked their Club Nintendo account from their eShop account, which may have cleared the purchase history, meaning the games are no longer flagged as purchased on your system.

Again, just a theory, so you should probably exhaust all your options before giving up hope.

'Modern Zelda told me I don't need a potion'

Classic Zelda is gonna tell you you need a blue potion in dungeons 6, 8 and Death Mountain. Dungeon 7 is a comparative cakewalk and I usually did it as soon as possible to get the heart container. You want the 12 heart containers so you can have the master sword before you do Dungeon 6.

You'll also want a blue potion.
