3DS Game Recommendations/Condemnations | Thread 2 | Two screens, three dimensions!

3DS GAF, help.

I treated myself to a 2DS because they were discounted and i have a good reason to celebrate. (My thesis was approved! I'm going to get my LL.M.! )

But money is tight and 3DS games are expensive so i can get only one game for now.

Suggestions?

I'm thinking of Fire Emblem or Bravely Default or Etrian Odyssey 4 or Soul Hackers.
(Don't say SMTIV because i am in Europe.)

First things first if you treated yourself to a 2ds is that you can go visit the eshop and download demo's they have demo's of Fire Emblem, Bravely and Etrian so you can check them out if you like them or not.

Now for my opinion Fire Emblem is my GOTY so that one has high priority It has a lot of content and there is dlc if you wish to further expand upon this magnificent world. The game is one of the best in the fire emblem series. I didnt like the Demo of Bravely because it feels like Final Fantasy and never been a fan of that which is funny because i absolutly love Dragon Quest. But if you played a final fantasy game you should try it one of the best rpg's out there.

Also i still want to buy Etrian, but money is thight and still have to complete EO 3 which i imported. so i try to finish that. And while Devil summoners is probably great but your money is thight so i would wait for SMT4 to hopefully make it to EU shores this year so you can buy that one because i heard SMT4 is superior to Soul Hackers.

Oh duh, demo's! I'll definitely look at those, thanks.

You're in the same boat as me on EO3. I probably should at least try to finish that before going for 4, yep yep.

All of those games are great, but Fire emblem is probably the best whole package. Amazing game.

It's a fundamental difference that Sticker Star is not driven by its plot, but by exploration and puzzles :/ I can see why people wanted more scripted fun dialogue and stuff, I guess.

I think the game is surprisingly decent, I'm still in the middle of world 3 but I've been surprised by some of the puzzles (can they be called that?) and how clever some things are hidden. However my main problem with it is I can't for the life of me figure out why I should battle anything but the bosses. By not making it a RPG they took away the sole reason to fight, to gain xp and get stronger. In this all you get are coins and if you're lucky a sticker to replace the 2 or more you used in battle.

Also some of the puzzles are way too confusing. I spent an hour trying to figure out how to get by this tornado in the second area only to look online and see that a
vacuum cleaner
, which I had in my "things" inventory, was the answer. How the hell do you figure out something that damn wacky and nonsensical on your own?

Animal Crossing is one of my favourite games. I don't think I need to explain what type of game it is since you've played before. This version has a lot of things to do. I've only played Wild World on DS before so I can't relate to Gamecube versions but this game is absolutely wonderful. It is filled with charm and there is enough to do that you will be busy for a long time. I recommend checking out some of the features listed in the OT. I'll also quote my write up from the old recommendations/condemnations thread.

Thanks that helped a lot. I think I may just give it a go.

Congratulations, it's awesome! That's what got me to buy one earlier this year. Hell of a promotion.

I'm trying to convince my friend to buy a 3DS, if the free SM3DL doesn't sway him I don't know what will!

I made use of the last offer and it's the beat free game I've ever had!

You can't actually go wrong with any of these if you're a fan of good JRPGs. Just pick the style you want: FE is an elaborate SRPG, Bravely Default is a love letter to SNES-era Final Fantasy, EO4 is an old-school first-person dungeon crawler, and Soul Hackers is a PSX-era Megaten game with ridiculous cyberspace hacker trappings.

I bought the last new copy of harvest moon a new beginning today at gamestop while I was there trading in Knack and Killzone for $40 each. What is wrong with me?

Seriously though I heard this one was really good and it's been quite a while since I played one so I figured why not.

I want to play that too, but I fear I might get really into it then completely forget about it, Animal Crossing style :P

I ended up getting EO4 in the end, since the local shop suddenly had a secondhand copy of it behind the counter.
Will definitely aim to get Fire Emblem next/eventually though, since everyone seems to recommend it so heartily.

Really, really enjoying EO4 so far. First TPK was at the hands of three rats, ahaha.

How come there's no FPS for the 3DS?

Also I've never played a Professor Layton game before, do I need to play the previous ones or can I just jump in with the 3DS one?

How come there's no FPS for the 3DS?

The device only has 1 analog stick as the standard, most normal FPS would be unplayable. Not to mention extremely ugly with the low power on 3DS.

On a more positive note I've been playing more of Luigi's Mansion and I've started to really like it. It has some cleverly hidden secrets, although there's really no point to get any of them other than to say you did (I really wish nintendo had achievements!). It's a pretty long game too, after 11 hours I only have the first stage on the 3rd mansion done.

That's not a good excuse. DS had some FPS and it didn't even had a analog stick and power wise it's way worse.

I think that touch screen control for FPS, like Metroid Prime Hunters work great, and 3DS can put out some beautiful games.

Plus, a lot of old FPSs would work awesomely on the 3DS like Doom, Heretic, Duke 3D and so on. Not all games need two sticks.

I started playing Soul Hackers today and I've gotta say I've been enjoying it a lot so far. I think the game got some unfair review scores due to how old school it is, (it's an improved port of a PSX game after all,) but it has been a great game so far if you enjoy that kind of thing. (I do!)

Classic MegaTen for sure.

Yup. It's a very fun ride, all but the last run, which wasn't as bad as some folks make it out to be. I love its vibe, though.

I would love a FPS on 3DS, or ports of older shooters. Don't know how they'd feel, but I'd be happy to try them out.

Cult County is coming eventually, though I get the impression it has a stronger focus on survival horror.

I guess it's just difficult with only one stick, otherwise I guess there would be more shooters? The stylus kind of works but it's tricky. How many actual FPS's have there been on the system?

If you're OK with a TPS, IronFall comes out next year and looks AMAZEBALLS.

If we're good with third person, Kid Icarus is almost a shooter as well and the game is fantastic.

I am ok with the old N64 style controls. That is XYAB for movement and stick for scope/look. Then just R for trigger, L for crouch and double tap L for jumps/interactions. Tap screen for reloads?

Bring back the simple arena style shooter. Gimme UT/Q3 on my favourite gaming device. I'll be all over it. Or maybe a simple CS?

I'll recommend Steam World Dig at its price. I booted it up for the first time on Saturday and couldn't put it down for several hours. Here's why I got hooked and recommend it if you don't have Steam/want the game on the go (I suppose a laptop is similar):

-It has Metroidvania style progression and exploration; you upgrade your gear, get new gear to explore areas you previously weren't able to.
-It's like Dig Dug/Terraria which I personally did not like from what I played of the 360 version.
-It's kind of like Dark Souls in that if you die, you can retrieve your bag of minerals that you can bring back to the surface to level up and unlock new gear/upgrades.
-It has a robot protagonist/NPC's. I got a Metal Arms vibe from it but set against a Wild West backdrop.
-It plays great and it looks fantastic; there's many little touches in the animations that give it more detail e.g. lighting, smoke effects, etc.
-It's a pretty decent length. I put in 8.5 hours and have some backtracking to do but I think I'm almost at the end. It should be probably 10 hrs or so.

I really like the boss fights, although many people found the 4th mansion boss to be quite difficult.

This is the main thing I was wondering about. I love Metroidvanias, so I'll definitely pick it up when I get my 3DS, seems pretty cool. There's no reason the 3DS version is inferior, right? This seems like the kind of game that'd be nice to have in portable form.

Miracle Mask is the 2nd in the prequel trilogy. Last Specter and the original trilogy are all on DS. If you really care about the story and wanna go in chronological order you only need to play Last Specter and watch the movie, otherwise you're good.

I just want to say. If you have played the previous Phoenix Wright games (and I mean ALL of them available to you), then you must get Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies on the 3DS. Sooooooo good :D

Great list, i highly recommend adding these:

Tales of the Abyss

A fantastic RPG, and this is coming from someone who buys consoles strictly for RPG's. Memorable story and characters, great battle system, superb music, and definitely one of the best looking 3DS games. Follows the story of Luke Fabre, it gets interesting very quickly (which is rare in most RPG's).

Pheonix Wright Dual Destinies

One of the best in the series. Incredible production values, visuals, music, story and dialogue. A no-brainer for any 3DS owner. Pheonix Wright excels in story telling and immersion.
