50 books. 50 movies. One year - 2016 edition

GK86

Homeland Security Fail
I think I will end my 2016 challenge. I didn't come close with the book total at all, but I reached my personal goal of reading at least 10 books. Next year, I'm setting a personal goal of 25 books.

Final Tally: GK86 - 11/50 books | 106/50 movies

My favorite movie: Tied between "The Little Prince" and "Vampire Kiss" (yes, the Nic Cage movie)

My least liked: "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" or "The Quest"

Biggest disappointment: Tied between "Batman vs Superman" and "Suicide Squad"

My favorite book: "Captain Blood"

I will probably start updating the final tallies next Tuesday. It is a shame Orthodoxy1095 is banned. Hopefully you come back soon!

"Vampire Kiss" (yes, the Nic Cage movie)
Ha yes! You watched it for HDTGM purposes too, right? At first when I thought it was just another vampire movie I was barely paying attention and then I was like wait what IS this? and then when I realized what was really happening I thought this is amazing. If it weren't for the book being out before this I'd not at all be surprised to know American Psycho is an homage to Vampires Kiss. Btw, I love that June still isn't sure if Cage is a vampire or not.

It is just a mindfuck of a movie. The whole time I was viewing it, I was thinking to myself, what in the world is going on? The accent, the crazy mood swings, him chasing that poor woman, the ending. It is downright amazing. Nic Cage is a national treasure (no pun intended).

And June's reaction to the movie was great lol.

I did it!

Books were actually 52, but I decided not to count a couple poetry ones I read due to the low word count.

Loved doing this challenge, it really helped me to put reading back on the forefront of my activities. And as a writing exercise I've been posting reviews of the books I read on Facebook too (in Portuguese).

Next year I think I'll have an easier time with the challenge, I'll start from January proper and my monthly scheduling will be better since now I'm more aware of my limitations.

49 books done now.

I've decided that I want to end the challenge with something worthy so I'm going to read Slaughterhouse-Five as my 50th book.

Edit: While I have been counting TV shows in my movies total, I am actually right on 50 movies if I take the TV shows out.

I may update my book list tomorrow after I finish the one I'm currently reading. I've read 14 book (15 with this last one) and, according to goodreads, at about 6.445 pages.

Not near the 50 books challange, but a very good personal record! =D
Next year I intend to read even more!

Holy shit, I actually did it. I have never even got close to reading 50 books in a year, but I managed to do it this year!

I think maybe the fact my kids are a little older now (4 and 2) has given me a little more spare time compared to previous years.

I can't really pick a favourite book as there were so many that I just absolutely loved.

Films this year have been a mixed bag. Some big disappointments and some surprising gems.

While I did count TV seasons in my total, I actually watched 51 films this year so my 50/50 is complete regardless.

Next year I'll be participating, but have already queued up quite a bunch of longer books which I have been putting off this year, so I don't think I'll be "winning" the challenge in 2017.

I have not been able to complete the challange, but I'm very happy with my own personal record. I intend to more or less double the ammount of book reading next year! =)

From those I read this year though, there are some that really surprised me: Harry Potter (#2) and the Chamber of Secrets, Dom Casmurro, The Hobbit, O Grande Mentecapto (The Great Insane) and Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas). Highly reccomend these! And for those who are not familiar with Brazilian classic literature, please, try Machado de Assis, he was a genius writer!

This year I got pretty much only books I was already interested since a while. It probably helps with the fact that I haven't read one single book that I considered bad (yeah, I liked them all).

Here goes my updated list:

Kssio_Aug - 15/50 books

  • January 1st - Harry Potter (#1) and the Sorcere's Stone [J. K. Rowling]
  • January 7th - Harry Potter (#2) and the Chamber of Secrets [J. K. Rowling]
  • January 23rd - Harry Potter (#3) and the Prisoner of Azkaban [J. K. Rowling]
  • February 20th - Harry Potter (#4) and the Goblet of Fire [J. K. Rowling]
  • March 29th - Harry Potter (#5) and the Order of the Phoenix [J. K. Rowling]
  • May 2nd - Harry Potter (#6) and the Half-Blood Prince [J. K. Rowling]
  • June 14th - Dom Casmurro [Machado de Assis]
  • July 14th - Harry Potter (#7) and the Deathly Hallows [J. K. Rowling]
  • August 25th - Como Passar em Provas e Concursos [William Douglas]
  • September 16th - The Life of the Mind (One Volume Edition) [Hanna Arendt]
  • October 10th - Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? [Michael J. Sandel]
  • October 21st - Contos de Aprendiz [Carlos Drummond de Andrade]
  • November 16th - The Hobbit [J. R. R. Tolkien]
  • December 19th - O Grande Mentecapto [Fernando Sabino]
  • December 29th - Memória Póstumas de Brás Cubas [Machado de Assis]

End of December Update:
I completely stuffed up this year. I don't think I've ever had a year where I read so little, but I've had a lot on my mind this year and a lot to deal with, and my desire to read just completely vanished. It would probably have come back if I'd just picked something up and started reading anyway but I didn't.

Hopefully I can get back on track in 2017. My reading apathy didn't change my desire to buy books, just my desire to read them, so I have a whole load of books to get started on next year :)

Just barely made my goal of 75. Hoping to hit 52 next year. Am going to be relearning Spanish from scratch so I expect my output to take a hit.

Is someone going to make a best of 2016 thread? I'm sure everyone has recommendations they want to make.

Looks like I am going to have to call time on this. I very nearly did it, but in the end, life turned upside down in the last week of the year.

It goes to show that I was far too complacent in the first half of the year. Actually the first 75% of the year. I will see if I can adjust so I can succeed next year.

December update:

Cade - 48/50 Books - 70/50 Movies

Fuck. I miscounted and thought I was at 48/50 and would easily have time to finish the book I was on and start and finish another.

I was at 47/50 and there's no way I can do two books in 19 hours. So my challenge ends here, with the last book I finished (False Dawn) being decidedly mediocre. Ah well. I shouldn't have taken on the 52 games as well, I guess.

So...

Not sure I'll do it again next year, might shoot for a smaller goal on books and games so I spend less time fretting (and more time reading longer books, as some of the longer books I read were some of my favorites).

Grats to the winners, I wish I could've joined you again.

I guess I might as well round up all my info and do a final tally - I know I wont finish the book I'm working on today (I purposely picked a long one to take me into the new year) and I don't feel like watching any movies.

with the last book I finished (False Dawn) being decidedly mediocre.

lol I just added that to my kindle wishlist the other day. Well that's disappointing to hear. Also, I checked out your books and we have shockingly similar tastes. I'll have to pay attention when you say you like something. :b

I think I bought it off you posting it being on sale in the reading thread, unless that wasn't you? My brain's been scrambled for weeks. It had a cool idea, and the world was okay, but it just didn't do much to set it apart from other post-apoc stuff (part of which, of course, is because it's from the 70s and came before a lot of the stuff that's made post-apoc so commonplace). There's also a weird subplot because
the main character gets raped like ten pages into the book
and is the running explanation for how she treats her companion. It's pretty short though and it's got a couple of interesting sections, so it's worth a read, just not expecting much.

Oh, nice! I should do the same and see what all you've read and liked that I haven't read.

So the year is over now and it's time to look back. I really like the Goodread summary so I'll post it here too. The thing I was most surprised by was that the amount of pages read had gone from 20609 in 2015 to 24489 in 2016 with fewer books.

And lastly, I'd just like to compare my efforts a little bit between these last two years. You can really see how the pace dropped considerably coming into September. Overall very satisfied with the amount of culture I've consumed.

Actually had a hard enough time with the movies and had to watch two today to finish. I was expecting the total opposite but it's easy to read a bit of a book here but watching a movie generally requires carving out a 2hr block of time.

I can listen to an audiobook while working or read during a break, but a movie requires attention. I really need to update my Goodreads. But I'll put the rest of the books I've done on here.

  20. Jungle Book (2016) - ★★★★☆ (Apr. 22, 2016)
  21. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Extended Edition 3D (2013) - ★★★★★ (Apr. 28, 2016)
Kind of questionable waters here as I've seen the non-Extended version before, but not since it's original release. Combined with watching it on n3DSXL (you can stream 3-D movies to an n3DS!!!), which makes for a different experience, I'm gonna count it as a new movie. Knowing a bit more about the later movies, it's interesting to go back to the first and see the progression. Also love watching 3-D movies on the n3DSXL. Yes, it's a smaller screen, but this is what I've been wanting since the 3DS was announced. It's a joy to finally see it come to life (in a way)!
  22. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Extended Edition 3D (2014) - ★★★★★ (Apr. 30, 2016)
Same reasoning as Hobbit 1 here for inclusion. Think extended use of 3-D on n3DSXL might be affecting my eyes, but I do love watching movies on 3-D at home now. Will deal with it for the third one. (^_^) Lots of details I had forgotten from the original version. Part of that was I really didn't like the original versions spending so much time doing nothing compared to LotR trilogy, which was so packed with actions. Appreciating it much more a couple of years later, though. From reviews, the Extended Edition is supposed to make the transition between sections better, too, so that may be part of it. Don't recall enough of the original version to notice the extensions much, though. I do like this version better than I recall thinking of the theatrical version, so that's something. On to the third!
  23. Huntsman: Winter's War (2016) - ★★★★☆ (May 1, 2016)
Too bad the series is dead now. Liked this one. Jessica Chastain? Great addition!
  24. The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies, Extended Edition 3D (2015) - ★★★★★ (May 2, 2016)
Barely recall the theatre version, but this one is interesting. Still prefer the old 1978 cartoon version of The Hobbit, though! :lol
  25. Superfast! (2015) - ★☆☆☆☆ (May 5, 2016)
Superbad! (But then, that's why people watch these parodies!)
  26. Captain America: Civil War (2016) - ★★★★☆ (May 5, 2016)
Wonderful. Had no interest in a Black Panther movie before this. Stoked about a Black Panther movie now. Tony Stark continues his slide into irrelevance.
  27. Dr. No (1962) - ★★☆☆☆ (May 19, 2016)
Don't think I've ever seen James Bond #1 before. Missing the fancy gadgets and only some of the 007 tropes are present. Decent enough for a start, I suppose.
  28. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Season 3 (2016) - ★★★★☆ (May 20, 2016)
Love this series! Looking forward to more of it. (^_^)
  29. From Russia With Love (1963) - ★★★☆☆ (May 20, 2016)
Familiar with the name, but the movie is new to me again. Started off hating this one as Bond is so uncaring of how he uses these women, but he turned around toward the end showing some care for her after
finding out she was duped by Spectre, too
. Still don't like the handling of women in these early films. I know Daniel Craig flirts and has relations with women, too, but it seems much more like consenting adults than the manipulations and behind-the-scenes coersions in these early Bond films. Can't wait to get through to the modern ones on this Bond journey, but most will probably not be reported here due to having seen many before.
  30. Goldfinger (1964) - ★★★★☆ (May 22, 2016)
Finally the Bond tropes start making appearances! Q's in top form (2nd movie, but just a bit part in the last one) showing off all kinds of gadgets, Aston Martin with fancy doo-hickies, wildly inappropriately named females, and bad guys walking out on Bond when he's going to die before he turns it around. It's all here, at last! Had seen parts of Goldfinger before (I'm pretty sure) but don't recall seeing the whole movie. Will see how long this goes. :)
  31. Thunderball (1965) - ★★★☆☆ (May 24, 2016)
Old Bond. Really don't like the treatment of women in it, but it's a "classic."
  32. You Only Live Twice (1967) - ★★★☆☆ (May 25, 2016)
There's actually a progression with these Bond movies! They're not just all one-offs! Like the last few, remember seeing parts of these a long time ago when younger on TV but never the full movie. Always good to see space stuff. (^_^)
  33. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) - ★★★★☆ (May 27, 2016)
    Loved it. Wish
Apocalypse had survived, though. Thousands of years of human history in his mind? Need to get that info stat!
Don't get the poor reviews. Also, Poe Dameron is Apocalypse. (o_o)
  34. Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) - ★★☆☆☆ (May 28, 2016)
The Bond stinks, but I like Teresa (the Bond girl he
    marries before she's killed
). The Bond is self-aware, references the previous Bond (Connery), fights terribly (swings like he wants to be countered), and has no real skills. Teresa, on the other hand, is strong, doesn't "fall" for Bond's ways but keeps herself intact, saves Bond, doesn't use her sexuality as a manipulative tactic (hate it when girls do that), comes from a family built on illegality yet fights to be better, and doesn't just fall back on her laurels. Also don't like the replacement actor for the Spectre chief from YOLT. Teresa was a breath of fresh air for a Bond girl, though. I recall seeing parts of several of these Bond films when they were shown on TV a long time ago, but don't think I've watched all of any of these, so far. That should change with the Roger Moore ones, but we'll see!
  35. Diamonds Are Forever (1971) - ★★★☆☆ (June 2, 2016)
So the movie was advertised at the end of HMSS with Lazenby, but Connery gets the part.
Blofeld is killed in the first few minutes only to find out he's alive by the middle and still so at the end.
Lots of bait and switches going on here. Space stuff again, so can't fault that. Guess it was a theme of the time with the moon landings? Like that they had a fake Moon Landing going on in one of the sound stages. Wonder if that's fueled some of the conspiracy theorists over the years. "I saw them fake it in that Bond film, so I knows its a fake!"
  36. Octopussy (1983) - ★★★☆☆ (June 11, 2016)
I'd seen every Roger Moore Bond up to this one. Was thinking I was going to have seen them all before, but nope! Really like the cultural use of India here, too. Very fun!
  37. A View To A Kill (1985) - ★★★☆☆ (June 16, 2016)
Saw Elsa from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in her first role! Minor one, but cool to see her so far back! Movie was very empty of use, though. The last Roger Moore bond goes out with a whimper.
  38. Finding Dory (2016) - ★★★★☆ (June 21, 2016)
    Great fun family movie!
  39. Free State of Jones (2016) - ★★☆☆☆ (June 25, 2016)
Bit of a bait-and-switch. Thought this was going to be focused on a seemingly independent Free County in the South during the Civil War, which would've been a really cool concept that I wasn't aware of from history. Instead
it's about the Civil Rights Era trial of some kid who had a black grandma from that time period, and the Civil War parts are the flashback providing details of his situation. Also, the "Free State" was like one small section in the movie, not recoginized by anyone else, and quickly lost.
    What a let down.
  40. Independence Day: Resurgance (2016) - ★★★★☆ (June 26, 2016)
Great movie to bring current viewers on-board that aren't intimately familiar with the 1996 original. Looking forward to how they take
    the interstellar war
    going forward!
  41. The Living Daylights (1987) - ★★★★☆ (June 28, 2016)
A James Bond where he doesn't try to bed every woman he sees, makes a long-term investment in one, and protects her to the end. Nice! Hadn't seen this first Timothy Dalton Bond before. I think this may be the last Bond I haven't seen before in its entirety, though. Will continue on through the Daniel Craig ones (that I love), but this should be the last entry on the new watches. (^_^)
  42. Legend of Tarzan (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (June 30, 2016)
Tarzan is too stoic. Needs more fun with his life.
  43. Central Intelligence (2016) - ★★★★☆ (July 1, 2016)
Loved this one. The Rock makes it work so well. Surprised!
  44. This is Where I Leave You (2014) - ★★★★☆ (July 9, 2016)
Watched it twice. Feel really connected to the main character with the insanity around him and embarassment for others hurting him. Good movie.
  45. Zoolander No. 2, Magnum Edition (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (July 13, 2016)
    That face!
  46. The Infiltrator (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (July 13, 2016)
    Basic story. Good acting.
  47. Ghostbusters 3D (2016) - ★★★★☆ (July 17, 2016)
Didn't like Thor in it, but liked the rest of it. Too bad it'll never have a sequel. (-_-)
  48. The Departed (2006) - ★★☆☆☆ (July 19, 2016)
    What a horribly depressing movie.
The only good "winner" is the guy who was a prick to the best guy in the film for no good freaking reason. Everyone else died stupidly and needlessly.
Apparently this is an Oscar winner, and it sucks. Really sucks. Great acting. Really great acting. Horrible movie.
  49. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) - ★★★★★ (July 20, 2016)
    Loved it!
  50. The BFG (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (July 20, 2016)
That kid's clothes should've been way dirtier than they were. Clean feet after all that walking with no shoes? I think not!
  51. Star Trek Beyond 3D (2016) - ★★★★☆ (July 22, 2016)
They always destroy/nearly destroy the Enterprise in these rebooted movies. :/
  52. Inception (2010) - ★★★★☆ (July 23, 2016)
What happens with the top at the end!? Ahhh!
  53. Planet of the Apes (1968) - ★★☆☆☆ (July 24, 2016)
This was a hokey movie. Heston's character is way over the top. What, did they pick random regular people from a list of volunteers for this mission? These aren't scientists. This is crazy. Finally found out where that laughing GIF of Heston came from, though.
  54. Daddy's Home (2015) - ★☆☆☆☆ (July 25, 2016)
Saved from 0-stars by the completely unrealistic turnaround at the ending (
from the point the wife starts manning up like the step-Dad should've from Day 1 and forces the real Dad to try to be a real dad to his kids and realizes he can't take it
) which I normally hate but it was so bad before that I welcome unrealistic magic-fiction over the crappy cesspool that the movie had become up to that point. Basically cut out the middle 20 minutes or so (
from the skateboard scene to the point the wife mans up
), and it wouldn't have gotten to those levels. Just really bad in there.
  55. P.S. I Love You (2007) - ★★★★☆ (July 25, 2016)
Hilary Swank brought the movie down, but Gerard Butler and (surprisingly) the mom's actor helped this turn out pretty good. Love the story. Really surprised to see The Comedian from Watchmen (the actor) in it. Don't recall seeing him in anything else before. Really love the story, though.
  56. Nerve (2016) - ★★★★☆ (July 27, 2016)
Impossible to pull off but a good commentary on spectators enabling terrible behavior.
  57. Jason Bourne (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (July 28, 2016)
As good/bad as the third one, which I didn't like. Disappointed. (-_-)
  58. Gone with the Wind (1939) - ★★★★★ (July 31, 2016)
Very long. Tara! Classic Tragedy. Love the period-specific lifestyle references.
  59. 5th Wave (2016) - ★★☆☆☆ (July 31, 2016)
As useless as I expected it to be.
  60. Captain Fantastic (2016) - ★★★★☆ (August 2, 2016)
"We're always respectful, except of Christians." At least they're honest about it! Guy promoted lying in his kids. Not a good path. Lot of loyalty in that family. Love the focus on academics, even it is kind of pointless with the life they lead (in the wild).
  61. Great Gatsby (2013) - ★★★☆☆ (August 3, 2016)
Don't recall a ton from the book in High School. Loved the narration style. Story left something to be desired.
  62. Casablanca (1939) - ★★★★★ (August 6, 2016)
Best. Ending. Ever. Another complex story with emotions and reasons and honest mistakes and despair like Gone With the Wind. All led up to
    a surprising best ending ever
    . Great movie.
  63. Secret Life of Pets (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (August 13, 2016)
    Meh. Not bad. Cute stuff.
  64. Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) - ★★★★☆ (August 19, 2016)
Love stop-motion stuff, and this one worked really, really well mixing origami in, as well. (^_^)
  65. Roman Holiday (1953) - ★★★★☆ (August 30, 2016)
Audrey Hepburn's first role. Story seems a little too smacky but fun romp, nonetheless!
  66. Suicide Squad (2016) - ★★★★☆ (August 31, 2016)
What really stood out to me in this was the true love showed between Harley Quinn and The Joker. Loved that. They constantly risked everything for each other and trusted each other beyond implicitly. The rest of the cast was kind of throwaway, but those two really did a number to lift the film. Looking forward to a proper Batman with them in it.
  67. The Light Between the Oceans (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (September 5, 2016)
Would've been 4 stars, but the couple just totally ruined their chance for a happier life
when they didn't do the right thing and call the authorities about the body and the baby. I blame the wife who was majorly freaking out about the shame of having two miscarriages. Different times, but she had unfailing love from her husband, prospects for more trying, and adopting, if nothing else. Didn't need to lie, which ultimately led to 4 "happy" years followed by 20-30 wasted years.
Nice story, in general, though. Good to see Rachel Weisz back in something.
  68. Better Call Saul (Season 1) (2015) - ★★★★☆ (September 15, 2016)
Good prequel stuff for Breaking Bad. Stories are a little oblique, at times, but still care about the characters.
  69. MacBeth (2015) - ★★★★★ (September 20, 2016)
Got it for Fassbender and the girl from Dark Knight Rises. Wasn't disappointed. Took a hard to understand tale when reading directly in words, and made it digestable in context with some excellent locations and acting. Wonderfully done.
  70. The Do-Over (2016) - ★★☆☆☆ (September 27, 2016)
An Adam Sandler Netflix movie. Way, way, way too many F*bombs. Completely unnecessary. Fairly funny story otherwise. Typical empty plot twists. Just really weighed down by the out-of-place cussing.
  71. Sully (2016) - ★★★★☆ (October 1, 2016)
Good story. Good use of dramatic tension for a result in keeping with expectations.
  72. The Brothers Grimsby (2016) - ★★☆☆☆ (October 4, 2016)
I guess this would be considered a vulgar British movie. I'm not British, so it's basically just vulgar? Huh.
  73. Centurion (2010) - ★★★★☆ (October 7, 2016)
Have a soft place for movies
with happy romantic endings (call it wishful thinking). Yeah, all his fellow soldiers died, but he gave his all and was betrayed when he finally got back to Roman territory. He fulfilled his promise to the General and was still free to return to the beautiful, abandoned love in the woods.
Also a minor theme of endings being beginnings and the continuation of the story meaning the story, in the end, is what really matters and not the beginnings/endings.
  74. The Magnificent Seven (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (October 7, 2016)
Curious conflaguration but didn't like the end
    with so many dying
. If Chris Pratt is reducing his movies, he picked a poor one here. (-_-)
  75. Welcome to Me (2014) - ★★★☆☆ (October 15, 2016)
Mentally unclear woman wins the lottery and runs a talk show all about her own life. In the process, she gains some needed perspective on what matters in her life in the midst of her massive self-indulgence. Well portrayed if a little rough conceptually.
  76. Denial (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (October 20, 2016)
Annoying Brooklyn accent and manipulative, backwards English courts, decent movie. Good acting. Good to find the end to this true story that I vaguely recall from the 90s.
  77. Underworld (2003) - ★★★★☆ (October 30, 2016)
Interesting. Still deciding if I like the series or not but have the other movies to help decide.
  78. Tales from the Darkside (1990) - ★★★☆☆ (October 31, 2016)
Liked the third story with the Gargoyle
(stupid people can't keep secrets forever when instructed)
and the wraparound story. Rest were pretty bland, though.
  79. The Accountant (2016) - ★★★★★ (November 1, 2016)
Really loved this movie! Could identify with the main character some, loved the intense capability to digest information, and the focus on putting what he really cares about in a moveable place. Hope this one has sequels!
  80. Doctor Strange (2016) - ★★★★★ (November 5, 2016)
Really went into this unsure, as I didn't want magic to be entering into the Marvel Universe. Turns out they could explain it as
energy pulled from other Universes via programmed words/actions instead of magic caused by spells
, which is enough for me. Other part concerned with was "why do I care about this limitless Dr. Strange fellow in a world of the Avengers"? Turns out Benedict Cumberbatch really makes the character whole and sensical. Post-credit scenes were great, too. Looking forward to Thor: Ragnorak now!
  81. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (November 8, 2016)
Loved the book, but they just cut out way too much in the movie. A relationship built over several books got compressed into a weird turnabout with a sheriff at the beginning of this one. Reacher isn't some clairvoyant but more like a muscle-bound, hulking Sherlock Holmes. They don't carry that over so much in this one like they did the last one. Oh, well.
  82. Miracles From Heaven (2016) - ★☆☆☆☆ (November 13, 2016)
Man, this was bad. The action itself (tree branch drop causing cure for a paralyzed bowel) seems like the kind of thing God does, but the story is so self-serving, shallow, and completely devoid of God's Hand. The terrible church services all about singing with some of the most useless preaching. The shallow, appearance focused mother parading really terrible qualities. ("I'll just force my way into some super famouse doctor's schedule by flying to Boston, not at the prodding of God, but out of self-important concept of my family's need.") Using the church as a way to promote the husband's business. ("You've turned my Father's House into a house of thieves.") Just really bad.
  83. The Nice Guys (2016) - ★★☆☆☆ (November 15, 2016)
As bad as I thought it'd be.
Using a porno to sabotage the evil machinations of her government mom.
Wanted to see it for Gosling and Crowe, but really wasn't much redeeming in the movie.
  84. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3D (2016) - ★★★★☆ (November 18, 2016)
Another main character I can definitely identify with and loved the *secret* carried through by HP fans that
Grindelwald was the bad guy before the reveal at the end
. Loved the 3D, the less-focus on Oh-It's-Magic and more-focus on just the story. A grown up story indeed. Looking forward to the further four movies!!
  85. The Arrival (2016) - ★★★★★ (November 22, 2016)
Great Sci-Fi movie with a surprising focus and message that really speaks to me. Can't recommend highly enough.
  86. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (December 19, 2016)
Also one I'm glad I didn't see in theatres based on the previews. Really liked the main woman actor in Casino Royale, but she's just been a big disappointment (to me) since then (e.g. 300: Death of a Franchise, this one). Story was vaguely curious but way overly convoluted. Another one where I don't like that boy actor (the one from Ender's Game), either. Actors I don't like keep appearing in disappointing movies. Why are they drawn together? Hmmm.
  87. Star Wars: Rogue One 3D (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (December 20, 2016)
    Really didn't like that
    every major new character died
. Like, really didn't like it. If I ignore that and pretend that
    some survived
, it's a good Star Wars movie, but that fact just kills my caring about this movie so much!
  88. Passengers (2016) - ★★★★★ (December 25, 2016)
Loved this movie! Can't identify with the guy's action
of waking up the girl, as I'd be more inclined to go into perpetuity alone and die without condemning someone else, too
    , but it
saved the whole ship in the end. Another Ends Justify the Means justification?
Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence really carry this. Like the Sci-Fi part of this, too. Not too amazingly far out there. (^_^)
  89. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) - ★★☆☆☆ (December 27, 2016)
Another one I was right in that I wouldn't like it based on the previews but that I wanted to see based on the actors in it. (April from P&R and Anna Kendrick) Not the worst thing in the world, but definitely a waste of time to watch. *shrug*
  90. Assassin's Creed 3D (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (December 29, 2016)
Liked the past story (same as the games), but the present story was very unclear (same as the games). Unfortunately, it looks that if they keep the series going, it'll be focused on the present day stuff. Too bad as the past story is where these games (and also the movie) shine.

Barely got it in, but it's in! Don't think I'll be able to keep this up next year. My book reading will definitely be up over two years ago before starting these goal threads, but I just want to do so much more that I can't devote this much time to just books with everything else going on. These threads have really kicked me into gear these last few years, so I'm in great debt to them and those involved. Thank you to all and good luck for next year! \(^o^)/

I did read some books but didn't bother recording them. Will make an actual attempt at completing the book portion of the challenge in 2017.

What was a great start of the year pretty much went to shit quickly after that with one great disappointment after another, with the summer movies being almost all disappointing. That said, I still managed to watch quite a lot of good movies, but somehow the stinkers have left the most impression just by being part of 2016. Well, hopefully 2017 will be better. And also I should reaaaally read more books. This movie thing I've covered, but books not so much.

Mort (Terry Pratchett)
Babylon's Ashes (James S. A. Corey)
The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Conan Doyle)
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (J.K. Rowling)

109 movies and 46 books, close enough. If I use the over 500 pages cheat, it's 54 books though. I probably won't participate in the 2017 thread, it's my final year at college and I probably won't have as much time for books.

For my first time, I think I did ok, but I was really trying to hit that 50 movie mark in the last week of the year. Family and holiday things came up and I couldn't watch those last 10 movies that I need to! So close. Maybe next year I will pace myself better for the movies. We shall see. Congrats to those that were able to complete both sets of 50 and even those who only got through only 1 set of 50!

Happy New Year to all and have a great 2017 everyone. Keep reading and watching movies!
