Books
40. Doctor Sleep - Stephen King
41/42. The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

Movies
44. Sharknado 5: Global Swarming (2017)
45. Atomic Blonde (2017)

52. Death Note (2017)
53. Bigfoot vs. D.B. Cooper (2014)
54. The Mermaid (2016)

Books side: Doctor Sleep was actually a pretty compelling sequel to The Shining. After having slogged through rest of his Bill Hodges trilogy last month, I'm glad King didn't phone this one in too.

The Book Thief was a little tough to get through, because the narration style was driving me crazy. Using an
angel of death
to narrate made sense, but was handled poorly and constantly broke up the flow of the story.

I attempted to read Gardens of the Moon for a 2nd time ever, from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series - and gave up by chapter 6. I just couldn't.

And finally decided it's high time to finally finish the Harry Potter books, but the first 5 will be rereads and so aren't listed in this post. Currently working on #3

Movie side - clearly it was largely bad movie month for me. Which is great, I love bad movies. Now that I've crossed the 50 threshold, I expect movies to slow down.

Congrats to Mumei for finishing the challenge!

---

We are getting into Sept/Oct which is optimal Horror media consuming time for me. Expecting my film count to jump highly as long as I don't overdo it with rewatches and hopefully I can get back on track with books as well.

Books:

  • Romeo and/or Juliet - Ryan North

Movies:

Hmm, no movies this month. Read Ryan North's second Shakespeare "gamebook" on a whim, not as good as the first. Planning to start Abercrombie's Best Served Cold.

How is it so far? It's in my to-read list, so hoping it's good

So sorry, totally missed your post. Still about 150 pages in, it can be charming but it's a slow book. Hard to keep going when the book keeps reminding you
it won't end well
, heh. Edit - Saw that you've already read it lol. I also find the narrator annoying at times.

August (and also I think July) update

mu cephei - 18/50 books | 44/50 films

Since last update I watched:

Wonder Woman (2017) dir. Patty Jenkins
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) dir. Guy Richie
Power Rangers (2017) dir. Dean Israelite
Merantau (2009) dir. Gareth Evans
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) dir. Luc Besson
Dunkirk (2017) dir. Christopher Nolan
Life (2017) dir. Daniel Espinosa
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) dir. James Gunn
Your Name (2016) dir. Makoto Shinkai

Valerian and Power Rangers are the ones I least enjoyed. The leads in Valerian were written so unsympathetically, and the guy had no charisma at all. Plus it had some really bizarre tangents that just didn't work.

I loved King Arthur, so unashamed of itself with its elephant the size of skyscrapers and glowing eyes, and the soundtrack is excellent. Merantau was great. Your Name was wonderful and I was probably the only one on the plane back from Canada grateful for the announcement our landing at Heathrow was delayed 15 mins, as it meant I got to finish watching it. Added to the tension.

Apple Turnover - 48/50 books | 56/50 movies

Books:

43/44. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - J.K Rowling
45/46. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J.K Rowling
47/48. What Happened - Hillary Rodham Clinton (love you Hilldawg, but Jesus, that was some dry reading)

Movies:

55. Sharkansas Women's Prison Massacre (2016)
56. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

Came incredibly close on books. While I technically did read 2 others (HP 4&5), they were rereads, and so I've left them out here. I will definitely be finishing the challenge in early-to-mid October though.
