A Look Ahead : Could 2015 Be a Record Setting Year for the PS4?

This is why the no games argument is stupid. It sold 10 million "without games" imagine what it's going to sell with stedy flow of AAA software. Exclusive and 3rd party.....which i see a few are already discounting. Which is funny because 3rd party games sell the most on PS4.

There's a good lineup of games coming this year too. If Sony does a GTAV bundle that alone would increase PS4 sales throughout the holiday season.

O_O To me that's a hell ton of a lot! What exactly could you even need to say it would be enough otherwise if not for this huge arse list? Your saying all those games is not enough to pick up momentum??

Confusing statement, such a huge list of Games both format and or console exclusive, and then the better multi-platform versions (consoles) means a price cut is the last thing it needs??

I will explain. The list is ok but its size is inflated by a lot of indie, cross gen and niche stuff. In my personal opinion, out of the list provided the games that have the potential to boost the console's sales are:

Bloodborne
Metal Gear Solid V
Batman Arkham Knight

Even Bloodborne is a stretch, not because it doesn't look interesting (it does, very much so) but because the Souls series is not massive as people believe. It sells a couple million copies, decent but not great. The series is huge on GAF and rightly so, but it's not mainstream.

So yeah, I do believe Sony will need a price cut relatively soon. Triple-A production is not what it used to be and the vast majority of games is available on multiple platforms.

The way they will open with Bloodborne and The Order is just crazy.

They have loads of exclusives for 2015 and some of the big multiplats titles for 2015 (like MGS and FF) are perceived as PlayStation franchises. It also doesn't look like indie devs support will change anytime soon for the PS4.

Add to that the fact that Sony still has a considerable number of studios working on games we don't know about that should at the very least result in some very interesting conferences - SSM, Polyphony, SCEJ(at the very least TLG and the next Gravity Rush), Bend, Quantic Dream, MM,Guerrilla Games,Guerrilla Cambridge.

A price cut during E3 2015 would also be great to keep the PS4 on track to achieve PS2 numbers, project Morpheus should help as well.

To top it all they close the year with Uncharted 4 with ND coming out of TLoU success.

As long as Sony can keep the momentum going until the beginning of 2015 we are looking at a massacre.

Software wise maybe, hardware wise I'd doubt it. At least not until they hit a $299.99 price point which will probably happen in 2016.

Why phantom pain? That's crossgen.

But i still gotta disagree...with such a huge dearth of titles coming, and bundles and actual hype going on, i do think people are going to be less inclined to want to play a lot of these games on the crusty ass 10 year old consoles.

I kind of get what your saying...since 360 and PS3 didn't really shoot off into the stratosphere until the first official pricedrop, but i don't really think its necessarily necessary just yet. I'd put my bets on a price drop sometime in 2016 instead.

Aren't all of these except few multiplatform games? I dont see how it would see any drastic change sales wise. Its selling good now and will do good later as well.

That's one diverse and potentially high quality lineup indeed. However, I am almost as excited for what's not on your list in terms of ps4 exclusive software. I'm certain there are unannounced games from Sony WWstudios that we'll be seeing next year. There has to be at least a few surely, with the wealth of Sony studios that we know have been working on games since before the ps4 was even announced. Sony bends game and the next Gran Turismo look likely candidates to me. And I know some of you may snigger at this, 2015 will be the year that we finally get to play The Last Guardian.

Because it's a game series with a huge devoted audience that will want to play this on the best available quality. Then again this will be PC this time so who knows.

Wait wait wait...then how does that change anything from all the other mutliplat releases?

People are gonna want to play atleast a few of these games in much better quality than 360 and PS3 for sure, and that involves either getting a PC, or next gen console by default...

2015 seems to be a great year for the ps4, xbox one and wii u. I have games, both exclusively and third party for all of the systems that make me extremely excited.

Also, silent hills is already confirmed to be a 2016+ game, it's 100% impossible for the game to come out in 2015 in my opinion.

and the "ps4 has no games" argument is just because it's the first year for the system, and in my opinion is has close to no games that make me want to make a purchase of the console right now, the same goes for the xbone. But next year will change it, as is expected.

Dearth doesn't mean what you think it does. But on topic, that's a very nice mix of western and Japanese games, which is exactly what I want (and expect) out of a Sony console. Add in Xenoblade, Zelda, and Splatoon for WiiU and you've got a fantastic year.

So yeah, I do believe Sony will need a price cut relatively soon. Triple-A production is not what it used to be and the vast majority of games is available on multiple platforms.

Games being on multiple platforms doesn't mean people wouldn't be more likely to pick up a PS4 to play them on than anything else though.

2015 does look like a promising year, but OP is really, REALLY on a dangerous hype course here, especially making it sound like PS4 is the only gaming platform that'll have a "good" year in 2015. Lots of hyperbole and grandiose dreams that will disappoint if not realized.

I'd say lets let the year come and see what happens.

I mean, 30 million consoles in a year? ComeOnSon.gif

I'm gonna have a hard enough time keeping track of my PS4 games, let alone my Wii U games i want to get too....-sigh- such is life

Will they? More importantly, who are those people? Many hardcore console gamers already have a next gen console, many core gamers in general have a PC that is more powerful than either next gen consoles. That leaves the mainstream, an audience that must be lured if the PS4 is to achieve the explosive growth that the OP wants. Will mainstream buyers buy a new console to play many of the same games that are available on their current platform just for the better graphics? Personally I doubt it.

This is the exact same thing that happens at this point in every console gen cycle. Year 2 is almost always better than Year 1, especially for platforms that are viable.

Well its sure as hell to sell better as it gets cheaper. I expect a holidlay 2015 price drop to accompany Uncharted 4.

Uncharted 4 is going to outsell all three of those games.

Theres like... only 5 games on that list(not counting indies since I usually will play them more than AAA shit) that I'll get but it's still a p good sized list to get people talking about the platform

I think 30mil is only believable if you're on drugs but this will be a good year for the platform

OP, where the hell is Uncharted 4?

The early 2015 lineup is looking great. There's still too many games with vague "2015" releases dates though. Rime, Persona 5 (release in general), The Tomorrow Children, and others seem like they're coming out in the first half of the year but there's no announced quarter/dates.

Can't wait for Bloodborne.

But the list in the OP is looking mighty nice overall. Should be a good year.

Damn it OP, how can you forget such a return after a 10 year absence?

2015 is going to be better than 2007. Can't believe Battlefront is making a comeback.

Even Metal Gear? o____O
Metal Gear?!

Yes, unless that pulls out surprising numbers and rockets past 10 million or something, which I kind of doubt. MGS will do really well though, since it's not locked to one platform. It's much harder to predict with this one really, because it could theoretically kill it.

Is that coming out in 2015? If so then obviously it is also a system seller.
It's been announced as a 2015 release. Twice now I believe, once last year and once at E3 earlier this year. It's the big holiday game.

2015 is a more interesting gaming year in general, not just for the PS4. Half of those games listed aren't even exclusive.

It's probably going to be the best year for it's software so far but that's a relatively low bar for it regardless.

He didn't say only PS4 will have a great year, he's talking about how great it's software lineup is, that's all.

I can see how it will likely sell more hardware this this year than last. Much more reason to jump in.

They didn't announce 2015 last year

I know at least six people who are buying a PS4 because of bloodborne and they are not hardcore gamers at all. Saying Bloodborne is not mainstream and only for the hardcore gaf players is hilariously wrong.

Why? If anything the fact that it's looking as good as it does now should only give you confidence going forward.

I'm just sceptical these games will provide a big enough boost to sales in the Japanese market next year leading to less support going forward.

I prefer to be pessimistic so I can be pleasantly surprised though :)
