A Look Ahead : Could 2015 Be a Record Setting Year for the PS4?

Everyone?

Nintendo got Hyrule Warriors just today, MK8 not long ago, and MOTHERF@#$ING SMASH soon. Not to mention loads of support for the 3DS.

MS paid loads of money for Titanfall, D4 that just released, SO coming, FH2, and MCC coming. Not to mention they had more big budget exclusive games at release.

Sony's last big exclusive was Infamous and then a downloadable game made with Infamous assets, bad exclusives at launch, indie games that they didn't even really have to work for because of MS's idiotic parity clause. This holiday they've got a game that was supposed to released at launch and LBP3 a sequel to a series that has hugely waned in popularity and isn't even made by the original developer. Sony has all but admitted that they've stopped supporting the Vita on the other hand, instead letting indie developers take the load of selling their systems for them.

I think the comparison is pretty clear. Look, Sony is poor, I get it. Which is why I don't blame them really. But the fact that we've gotten fewer big games and almost non-existent firmware updates with features that were promised ages ago isn't any less true just because they are poor.

Things are looking brighter next year with Bloodborne and The Order (which looks pretty bad TBH), but I just don't have any confidence they can keep that up.

I cannot take you seriously. At first I thought you were a light-hearted troll. But now I can tell this thread may go places.

I cannot take you seriously. At first I thought you were a light-hearted troll. But now I can tell this thread may go places.

Rather than responding by not responding, why not actually address why you think that's not right?

I honestly cannot think of why it takes so long for them to update firmware. I mean I still get odd errors with recording and autouploading gamesaves to the cloud. Still no idea if we're ever going to be able to stream video to our TV using the console. Meanwhile we've heard of Plex on the Xbone and the firmware update to stream all types of video files.

If not for lack of personnel, which is generally attributed to lack of money to hire said personnel, what is it? Sony just doesn't give a damn? That doesn't sound a whole heck of a lot better. I think Sony would admit that the Xbone is the PS4's direct competitor and they don't care to at least try to compete on this front?

I mean seriously why no news on FW 2.0 still? Sony can post a billion blogposts about even the smallest indie that I'm certain almost no one cares about, but they can't spare one to at least give a quick update on 2.0 to reassure people that the promised features are coming soon?

What are they supposed to write? Headline: "Still working on FW 2.0, sit tight!"

Also, no one cares about indies? Please.

I didn't say no one cares about indies. I'm saying they sometimes write blog posts for certain indie games that everyone knows is not going to sell and not many people really are looking forward to. Of course people CARE about indies; Transistor is still my GOTY.

If they can feature a blog post for SOME incredibly obscure and low quality indie games (relative to ones like Transistor) can't they at least keep us updated on 2.0? I'm sure there is a bigger audience out there for these new features than some of those games.

Also every single feature-rich firmware that Sony releases always has a bunch of "hidden" features. How about actually doing some posts giving us a heads up so people can look forward to it rather than leaving it to people to discover it themselves. Look at every single firmware thread here on GAF and within the first 5 posts there's always people wondering what the hidden features are. I mean is Sony itself in the dark about these features that they slip in there every single time or something? Do they get slipped in a day before release so there's no time to do a blogpost previewing it weeks or even months before the actual release of the firmware?

I mean take a look at the recent 8.0.2 IOS firmware update. They took 8.0.1 down because there were issues and then put 8.0.2 up all in the same week. In those days between 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 they quickly talked about all the issues they were aware of and were going to be addressing. How about something like that - acknowledging that they know of the issues with recording, cloudsaves, FL being broken when people have "too many" friends even though they are under the limit set by Sony itself and simply stating that 2.0 will fix these issues?

Posting about obscure indie titles is a way to make people aware of said title so that it won't be as obscure.

And with the firmware, write to them and tell them. Focusing on promoting games is, personally, what I like to see and they can take their time with firmware and get it right. Consoles take time to mature so being upset about that is just really something to shrug off, in my opinion.

This is pretty funny as well if history has anything to say about Sony keeping new content coming to the systems later in life and throughout the console generation.

It's a shame your bias isn't allowing you to see the reality. You mentioned a Xbox/PC game but ignored the PlayStation/PC games. Kinect Sports Rival was the only MS game released this year until last week and it was a downloadable title (something you conveniently decide to count). You attempt to downplay 2 upcoming PS4 games that's been getting great impressions all year (you forgot to add Guilty Gear Xrd btw). TLOU: Remastered and MLB The Show suddenly doesn't exist.

.....this is all coming from the guy that praised Microsoft for the Tomb Raider deal and said they had a better Gamescom conference because of the timed blockade from PC/PlayStation.

If anything, the OP just points out that 2015 is just the year for games, regardless of platform.

PC, PS4, WiiU, and XBO all are going to have a stellar year.

This is pretty funny as well if history has anything to say about Sony keeping new content coming to the systems later in life and throughout the console generation.

I'm not saying the PSBlog needs to be filled with Firmware posts, but how about just one a month just so people even remember what's coming? Also I would assume that with monthly intervals that there would be new developments and new features they made progress on that they can share with fans. Hyping games on the blog does not need to be to the exclusion of everything else.

I'm fully aware of their history. Have owned every Playstation console and handheld since the PS1. Even now I have 4 PS3s, 4 PSPs, 2 Vitas, and 1 PS4 soon to be 2 PS4s. Sony is great at supporting their console for a LONG time, but they are not so good at supporting them in the early goings (talking primarily of 1st party or paid exclusives). PS2 era they had incredible early support but not because of 1st party or paid exclusives, they were all de facto exclusives because the competitors were garbage in comparison.

I know I may sound like a MS fanboy, but I call it like it is. It's how I am in sports too. I don't praise my favorite teams, I criticize, criticize, and criticize some more because I expect my favorite team, console, whatever to be better. Praising something you love does nothing to make it better.

Your not looking at reality Sony has brought out as many games as MS this year and come next year they already have 2 big ones for early part of the year .
Now your thinking they good or going sell well is another matter altogether .

Rather than responding by not responding, why not actually address why you think that's not right?
Probably because the way you've framed your responses makes it seem as though you would not listen to reasonable counterarguments if they were presented to you.

If I say there are many highly-reviewed indie game exclusives, and list a few along with their Metacritic averages, I have no doubt (because of your previous comments in this thread) that you will simply say the games don't qualify according to your criteria because they are indie titles. If I say The Last of Us: Remastered is one of, if not the most highly-reviewed current-gen AAA title(s) to date, you will say that it does not count because it is a port of a last-gen game, despite the fact that you listed Forza Horizon 2 and Titanfall as your counter examples, both of which have (or will have) versions readily available on the 360, and despite the fact that The Last of Us: Remastered sold over a million copies in a month, just like Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and Knack. I could do exactly the same with Final Fantasy XIV, which, as far as we know, is a current-gen exclusive.

Also, regarding

Sony's last big exclusive was Infamous

Could you please tell me what Microsoft's last big exclusive to date was? The last one I remember was Titanfall, which came out in March, and I also realize that you seemed to forget The Last of Us: Remastered in that quote, which, again, has already sold over a million copies, and Velocity 2X, which has reviewed very well.

I think a huge problem with the "PS4 haz no gamez" argument is that it lacks specificity, perhaps intentionally, which allows the claimant to shape it however he or she wants to suit the situation.

Is the PS4 lacking multiplatform games in which it is the best-selling current-gen system? Certainly not.

Is the PS4 lacking exclusives that have sold millions of copies each within the past year? Obviously not.

Is the PS4 lacking current gen exclusives that have averaged within the 80+ range on Metacritic? No, and the evidence is about three clicks away, though I can post it if needed.

So what is the real issue here?

I'm not saying the PSBlog needs to be filled with Firmware posts, but how about just one a month just so people even remember what's coming? Also I would assume that with monthly intervals that there would be new developments and new features they made progress on.

Because it is redundant if there is no new information to share.

If you know this, then why be an early adopter? Wait for the features and games you want to be released first then buy in. This is what I am doing.

I know I may sound like a MS fanboy, but I call it like it is. It's how I am in sports too. I don't praise my favorite teams, I criticize, criticize, and criticize some more because I expect my favorite team, console, whatever to be better. Praising something you love does nothing to make it better.

Criticizes all you want, praise all you want as well, it is not going to hasten their release date of the firmware/games/etc.

Are we confident on that 2015 date for Battlefront?

I mean .... a game just a year away I would love to see atleast ... something from first. Why I was hesitant with Uncharted lol.

Uncharted though will be the big E3 splash along with God of War ( fingers crossed )

If they're willing to let Hardline slip, I think Battlefront will too.

Yeah and seeing that gif again after so long makes my body scream out PLEASE DEAR GOD BE GOOD AND ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE THAT

looks like the F'in movies, ridiculous

Battlefront has been on tap to release in 2015 since being announced.

Plus they are going to want something to coincide with the new movie.

Games that i'll definitely will get on day 1:
Bloodborne: $60
The Witcher 3: $60
FF Type-0 HD: $60
Uncharted 4: $60
MGS V: TPP: $60
Batman AK: $60
And many more indies, my wallet is gonna cry in 2015 :(

Metal Gear Solid V
Uncharted 4
The Division
Star Wars Battlefront
The Witcher 3
Batman Arkham Asylum
Bloodborne
Rime
No Man's Sky
Rainbow Six Seige
Halo 5
Zelda U
Xenoblade X
Quantum break
Scalebound
All of these games I want on day 1.
2015 greatest year in gaming history comfirmed

Final Fantasy XV
Uncharted 4
Bloodborne
Megal Gear Solid V
Witcher 3
Batman: Arkham Knight
Persona 5

These in themselves are megatons that could carry a flagging system through a half year or more long game drought. And this leaves out a landslide of games like Rime, The Witness, No Man's Sky, The Order, Final Fantasy T0, etc, etc, that all look great.

2015 is going to be absolutely bonkers.

agreed, the PS4 isn't the only platform that will have an amazing 2015.

2015 IMO is pretty damn close to being one of the best years in gaming ever.

Huh... so you tried it in another thread, ran away when you got called out and now I guess you're trying again.

Maybe for some, but it's the Year of Wii U Part 2 for me.

Yoshi’s Wooly World
Zelda
Xenoblade Chronicles
Mario Maker
Splatoon
Mario Party 10
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem
Project Giant Robot
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Project Guard
Star Fox

vs.

Bloodborne
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
Persona 5

EDF, Dragon Quest Heroes and Ys aren't confirmed for 2015 in the US so they're aren't included in my list. I also need to beat the rest of the MGS games before I consider getting MGS5.

I mentioned Bloodborne and The Order in my edit. But holidays are always the most important time of year for the success of a console. In my original post I stated how I believed that the tide would begin turning this holiday because the competitors have FAR better releases coming. Also with the Xbone constantly getting new features every single month, the box itself would look better feature-wise compared to the PS4 during holidays as well.

I mean seriously why no news on FW 2.0 still? Sony can post a billion blogposts about even the smallest indie that I'm certain almost no one cares about, but they can't spare one to at least give a quick update on 2.0 to reassure people that the promised features are coming soon?
Competitors? That's plural.

You mean Wii U?!

So jomjom is a joke account, basically?

He's pretty much so full of shit, his eyes are brown.

The funny thing is sometimes he posts like he has sense, but this side always comes shining through. The new thing is constant firmware begs anywhere it fits, and anywhere else as well. :lol

judging from your obscene bias to microsoft, do you own a ps4 so you can find its secret weakness?

What are they supposed to write? Headline: "Still working on FW 2.0, sit tight!"

Also, no one cares about indies? Please.

As much as it saddens me, he's right about indies, at least when it comes to mainstream gamers. No one outside of the hardcore is going to buy a console to play an indie game, Minecraft excluded as the exception that proves the rule. For the majority of the console mainstream audience indie games are mostly a tasty little treat to pass the time between triple-A action releases. This is why indies should not be included in a list of potential system sellers. Not because of quality, in fact many indie games put many triple-A games to shame gameplay-wise, but because of the audience's preferences.

If anything, the OP just points out that 2015 is just the year for games, regardless of platform.

PC, PS4, WiiU, and XBO all are going to have a stellar year.

Based on that list, what is so stellar about it? A ton of sequels, lots of indies with niche appeal, remasters and very few big original IPs. The start of next gen was supposed to be all about innovation and starting new IPs. Do you guys see anything of the sort?

If you think 2015 is nuts, imagine what 2016 could look like if the first party studios finally get around to announcing what they're working on:

Guerilla Games - new IP "Horizon" hasn't been announced yet.

Media Molecule - besides Tearaway: Unfolded, they're working on a new IP.

Sony Bend Studio - working on a PS4 game.

Sony Santa Monica - the Cory Barlog project + most likely another internal game as well.

Sony Japan Studio - The Last Guardian (hasn't been canceled yet!) + Gravity Rush 2 (not announced for any platform, but seems obvious for PS4)

Guerilla Cambridge - working on a PS4 game

Plus 3rd party games:

Respawn - Stig Asmussen project (if he's not there for a new IP, I don't know why they hired him) + probably Titanfall 2

Kojima Productions - Silent Hills

And even some 2nd party titles:

Quantic Dream - working on a PS4 game

Rockstar North - Agent (hasn't been canceled yet!)

If you only own a wiiu, its looks like a very boring year honestly, the only game that i would get is zelda, i'm sure people also want splatoons and Xenoblade, but that won't sell consoles. i only plan on owning one console this gen, since i just don't have enough time for gaming as it is, especially with so many good games coming out on ps4.

PS4 games i want

Dying Light,
Saints Row IV: Re-Elected,
Bloodborne,
Final fantasy 13 not sure when this coming out
The Order: 1886,
Witcher 3
Mortal Kombat X,
Batman: Arkham Knight,
Dead or Alive 5: Last Round,
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain,
No Mans Sky,
Resident Evil HD Remastered,
Resident Evil: Revelations 2,
Uncharted 4
Rime

The next year certainly looks very promising, but it remains to be seen if it can match or outdo 1999, 2001, and 2013.

The reason I chose that title for this thread is because of how the PS4 has been perceived up until now by the general press / gamer. It is considered the console with " No Gamez! ", which is of course hyperbole but if you state the same thing enough eventually that statement becomes a sort of reality for some.

"Simplify and repetition. That is the secret of modern propaganda."

Repeating the no-games mantra doesn't make it any more true, but every generation since the PS2 it happens. It did apply to the PS3's first year though, and the PS2's pre-EU launch period.

agreed, the PS4 isn't the only platform that will have an amazing 2015.

2015 IMO is pretty damn close to being one of the best years in gaming ever.

Seems you guys are missing the point.

Yes all consoles will have a good year, but the thinking is that the PS4 will benefit the most since it's selling so well now with "barely any games." What are sales going to look like when you have a bunch of AAA 1st and 3rd party software releasing throughout the year.
