A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

I just noticed it wasn't working today and was about to look for the thread and cry but damn you're fast.

Hopefully this will get worked out soon =)

Important Notice!

I got an e-mail from my web host today (Dreamhost.com) that the site where I host the web app has been consuming too much CPU usage (probably the web app itself), so they have temporarily disabled the entire domain completely. I have contacted support to see what my options are. Initially, they appear to be suggesting I upgrade to a private server solution but this could cost $$$ depending on how much memory my PHP scripts require... for which I have absolutely no idea.

Further information as it develops. In the mean time, the web app is unavailable.

Dreamhost, really? I know it's cheap, but man, I have never heard worse things about any other web host...

Guys, let's not organize any fundraising yet. I'm not even certain how much money would even solve the problem or how often we'd need to pay. We should first try and find free solutions before we go throwing money at the problem.

Also, please post in this thread any offers of help rather than PMing me so everyone can see what options are on the table. I hate having to respond to PMs. Here's what I know so far:

  • In the past 30 days, the web app used 6.5 GB of bandwidth.
  • Dreamhost doesn't care about bandwidth, I basically have unlimited. They however do care that the web app is slowing other users on that server down.
  • They offer a Private, Virtual Server option but they charge by the MEMORY allocation. It starts at like $15 a month for 100MB of memory (on top of the $9 I already pay) but the prices go up dramatically.
  • I have no idea how much memory the web app consumes. The first week is free and you can find out how much you use. However, I could be locked in at that point which would suck especially if it cost hundreds per month.
  • They also said in their initial (automated) e-mail that if I just optimized my code that would be fine but I don't think that is a reliable solution.

Well, you'll need a (virtual) dedicated server but optimizing your code is handy seeing it'll lower your costs.

Is there any chance you can get some stats on memory usage / script exectution times etc?

I'm not affiliated in any way, but MediaTemple just seems to have updated the specs on their virtual servers. Seems like an alternative to consider.

? That's overblown. Sure, they've had their share of issues in the past, but the staff has always been incredibly open and helpful about what's going on and the fixes involved. I'll tak their support over any other host I've ever used. Hell, they keep an external blog just in case you think there's a server issue.

The problem is that like 1and1 or however many other cheap hosts, if you do shared (cheap) hosting, they cap you based on server utilization, since it's otherwise an unsustainable venture.

ckohler, are you going to try the 1-week trial? I mean, if everything is down, couldn't hurt to just give it a run and see what the utilization is. (The ad page suggests it's $1/month per 10mb...is that 15 a minimum?) Otherwise I guess we just need to know if someone else has a better hosting idea for the cost.

I use this web app, religiously, and would love to help.

You could piggyback off my plan, if you'd like.

I use MediaTemple and I don't imagine this would even put a dent in my current package; could also donate.

really wish we could get neogaf.com to host a mobile version of the site. Makes the most sense in my opinion. Have you tried pming the mods about this?

No joke, I wonder if it's more costly than we'd expect or something? I dunno'.

i'm up for a $10 paypal donation, but any possibility of pushing this to a paid iphone app that parses the site natively?

I swore ckohler had an earlier version of this "app" you could access with on a phone web browser and it worked with my Voyager. But now it just loads up the actual site.

I think they tried this and it got rejected?? Amazing if so.. We can have a giant bomb iPhone app or a player one podcast app.. But a neogaf app? Sorry if it's a hugely important part of many peoples daily lives.. But it's just a fan web forum.. Not accepted use :(

It was rejected before the ratings system was implemented in iTunes. any app that views unfiltered web content needs to be rated 17+ in the app store (yeah, it’s nuts) It could be resubmitted but it hasn’t yet (or maybe it’s been in approval limbo for ages, who knows)

anyway, as for the web app, I wish I could offer services but I know shit all about web programming or hosting services. But if it comes down to required donations, count me in.

Would be really great IMO. Also I'm willing to donate $$$ or help with code if needed. Lucky for me my iPod Touch is down in California being fixed so this outage isn't hurting me that much :lol

Do you have any information on how much bandwidth it is eating up? I guess if nothing else shows up I can host it.

It's not bandwidth, it's CPU time. Those are not the same thing.

Hope you come to a cheap solution soon enough. If not, I am also willing to donate. This is my most used app/site on my phone (N97)!

Totally willing to donate, but please don't make it a native iPhone app. I use it on Android.
Not like making an Android app would be any harder than making one for the iPhone.

It's all brilliantly falling into place.

ckohler fakes the website outage, GAF cries.
ckohler releases native application and charges .99c for it, ckohler retires.

I'll happily donate or pay some kind of registration fee. If you'd rather a one-off donation, might I suggest waiting until the Australian dollar reaches parity (or higher) so you can get more out of it? ;)

I've sent an e-mail to a guy I know with who has a dedicated server asking if I can host it there. If not, then the MediaTemple option is the best alternative so far.

The real issue is that unlike bandwidth, which is easy to calculate, I have no idea how much CPU/memory resources I need to host this web app and I am not skilled enough a server/programmer guy to calculate it. Thus, the best solution is to use a dedicated server where how much CPU/Memory I use won't be a problem.

Great...now we have to worry about your private server 500'ing just like GAF does...

You've got my money, whatever route you need to go, dude.

...and of course I'm kidding.

...about the 500 thing, not the money.

...I love you...

I could host the site on a server I have set up and a redirect could be done to your page so the URL stays the same.

I'll check on this thread in a bit, but if you want it fixed now I have no problem uploading it to my domain either indefinitely or while things get figured out.

I though GAF was down; I had almost forgotten the regular website was still accessible on he phone.

I can't read that without the webapp.:lol :( Count me in for a donation.

Has anybody tried to make an android app? Don't need approval for that, but yeah I'm also one of the guys who uses the web app everyday. If donation is needed I'll donate, this thing is the only reason I'm sane at work.

Just want to say that the web app is like 50% of my Safari use on the iPhone (probably more). That and google reader mobile. Hope this gets sorted out soon.

Even if EvilLore was up for that, neogaf.com already has memory/cpu issues. I think he said it's a quad core server with 16 gigabytes of memory. If that machine is 500'ing every so often, adding additional PHP tasks for it to process wouldn't be the smartest idea.

  • Making it a native iPhone application is foolish. I'm sure he's not going to do that. I'm not sure why it was even suggested in the first place.
  • I suspect there are a bunch of GAFers that can help you optimize the code. I think this is a great idea since it improves everything as a whole. Even if you do change hosts, this is still a good idea.
  • If it comes down to it, I suspect you can get a lot of donations from a substantial amount of GAFers, me included.

Whatever we do, let's move move move. I am not looking forward to tomorrow being a NeoGAF web app-less day :(
