About the allegedly sales coming from Xbox France

So... I left my tab earlier on that thread, and now that I'm back to the Pc hit F5, and saw this post (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=241064211&postcount=230) saying that the source of those numbers were from wiki.

I clicked the link and turns out whatever it was had been corrected already at 29M. When I tried to reply I noticed the thread was already locked.

Anyway... Going to the point, I found strange that the page was altered so close after he posted and looked at the history, turns out the change is fairly recent, only 6 days old (the same day as Ms E3 conference), as seen here: https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spécial:MobileDiff/138098195
I tried looking if any change prior to that also made similar changes but at least until the point I got bored of looking I couldn't find any previous change to this data (it doesn't help Wiki's history browser being really shitty)

This caught my eye, because the image, if real, was hyping out the Scorpio reveal on the 11th, so it would have been made before the wiki changes and if so it's likely someone erroneously edited the page looking at the leaked image, instead of the image being based on incorrect data.

I tried, searching, reverse image the picture, looking for terms in the pictures to try and find an article, looking at exif data, all to no luck, I have no way to confirm the date these images were created. So, detective gaf, do your thing!

Here's the thread source: https://xbox-anywhere.com/2017/06/17/la-marque-xbox-se-porte-bien-la-preuve-en-images/

And the image for reference:

Hopefully this thread isn't as much of a dumpster fire. I think I speak for many of us when I say that it'd be nice if Microsoft made their console sales numbers public. Could actually lead to some interesting discussion without the fanboy wars

I'll admit I'm confused. So what's the OP getting at?

That the 36.2 is real or that it's not?

That the number didn't come from the wiki. It's still highly unlikely to be real though, considering the huge spike in Xbox sales that would be this year, without any real exclusives to back it up. If the sales were suddenly this good, MS would be shouting it from the rooftops.

Going by the EA report, that 36.2 X1 number can't be real.

According to EA total Ps4+X1 sales were 79mln by the end of 2016. Sony mentioned 53mln Ps4 units sold in beginning of january this year. This means 26mln X1 consoles were sold at the end of 2016.

If 36.2mln number is true, MS has sold 10mln X1 consoles from january until may this year.

Who would believe this? That's better than Ps4.

Does it really matter enough to reopen a thread about it?
There's circumstantial evidence that suggests those numbers are bollocks, but theres no actual public numbers either way, so honestly, believe wtf you want.

There is no reason to take the forecasts from EA as gospel. They are not actual figures, they are guesstimates low balled for the purpose of forming a baseline to rely on for extrapolating their own sales targets. We should likewise not rely on data from random industry watcher firms either, which are notoriously bad at forecasts.

If the numbers are real, I feel like someone would confirm them from MS's end, perhaps via twitter if someone wants to ask Spencer or others. If they are way off, I also feel like someone might confirm as much. Or not. Can't hurt to try though, right?

don't mix estimates
just because EAs estimate is 79mln combined, they don't necessarily have their Ps4 estimate at the same number like Sony spot on at 53.4mln.
so you give 100% of the possible EA error margin just to one side of Xbox One.
but that is very flawed. If the EA estimates are off, they're off for both Ps4 and XB1

also sold through =/ sold in or shipped

so even IF this number would be correct, it does not mean they sold 10mln XB1 in 2017 already....

anyway i don't know what we should take from this topic.
so i hope the OP could explain it

None of the numbers in that image are official. In fact the infographic is not even from Microsoft.

Even the Halo 2 (2004) number is from Chartz.
The Xbox number has been inflated by 600,000 units. Microsoft shipped 24.0 million. Not 24.6 million.

I'm sure EA has actual figures.

kind of impossible, as they vary with Activision estimates (back in year one, when Activision gave out an estimated installbase, too - don't know about any updated number)
they can't have both actual figures and be different

and i don't say EA estimates are way of or anything.
just that they're estimates.

Well, the image also says something about the CPU (jaguar) and GPU (Radeon HD 7000). Is it officially confirmed?

EA released its numbers after Sony did. So one would hope they looked at the numbers Sony sent out months prior.

That the 36.2 is real or that it's not?

We know it cannot realistically be correct and the OP's post is hard to follow. There's no conspiracy and I'm not sure it's thread-worthy as the other thread was locked with good reason.

Wikipedia France had chartz sales total 25.47 million prior to May 31st.

An anonymous user edited the figure to read "36.2" on that date (17 days ago): https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spécial:MobileDiff/137819431

6 days ago someone attempted to "fix" the figure and instead of reverting to the old Chartz figure, they replaced with the current 29.6 million chartz figure. https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spécial:MobileDiff/138096984

This was reverted as vandalism in the link the OP found. Back to 36.2 million.

It looks like whoever created the "xbox france" image used the figure that had been entered anonymously at the end of May and displayed on wikipedia france during the first few weeks of this month.

Does it really matter enough to reopen a thread about it?

Nope.

Not that this really changes anything, but to just to clear up some confusion, the 36.2 number did not come from VGC. As far as I can tell, this is what happened:

  • The wiki article has always referenced VGC for its sales figures (and these did match the data from VGC). Look through the article history and you can see this.
  • Somebody seeing the apparently leaked image goes to the wiki article and edits in the 36.2 number. However, they do not remove the reference to VGC.
  • A thread was created on GAF. Someone looked at the wiki article, saw that the reference to VGC was still present, then rightfully mocked the number. The thread was closed based on this.
However, what people probably should have done in the original thread, is actually check VGC itself. Anyone doing this would then realise that VGC currently has the XB1 down as selling 29 million.

EDIT: Beaten by the post above saying pretty much the same thing.

yeah you would hope, but you can never know for certain

it was just meant as a basic principle one should avoid.
would probably not change the numbers by much anyway, but it makes a difference

you could also argue, that Superdata and everyone else doing estimates is looking at those numbers, but even then they're more often than not different from official numbers

Thanks detective GAF (i just believe you on this without double checking myself)

No one should take anything Superdata says seriously.

That last thread ended as a graveyard, why do this again?

The numbers were fake, mistakes were made all around, let's let it go.

Hmm come to think of it, 36.2 million would be a fairly substantial increase. My dumb ass wasn't thinking properly when I made a post thinking that this number could be plausible in the slightest.
