Activision details Skylanders: Imaginators for the Switch

I felt this was significant enough to warrant its own thread away from our OT. If anyone feels not, please join it with our OT!

The innovative design of the Nintendo Switch also introduces a new mechanic for Skylanders: No Portal of Power? No problem! With the Nintendo Switch you can load and store more than 300 toys from the Skylanders universe in a digital library, allowing players take the Skylanders and their adventures on the go.

So Nintendo has worked with Activision and Skylanders before on the Skylander amiibos of Donkey Kong and Bowser....but this is a huge development for the Skylanders series, which has thus far needed a "Portal of Power" accessory to plug into the system to scan the characters in. So you can scan them into the game using the Joy Cons now, as well as store the data for them digitally. The 3DS versions of the game have utilized this feature and looks to be a combo of that and the "Instant" characters which can be purchased digitally to play the game.

If the series continues this year (and right now, we don't really know) there's a big chance for Nintendo to score the franchise potentially even exclusively. I'm relatively sure the series performs the best on Nintendo consoles and recently the series jumped ship from the Wii (which had always been the best seller) to go to Wii U.

This is also interesting because it means that other companies can develop NFC related accessories without the need for them to be straight up amiibos.
