Yeah this game is basically a clone of advance wars.
There was a DL game on 360 that I liked that NO ONE ever talked about. I think it was called 'Commander Attack of Genomes' or something like that. It was very Advance Wars and a lotta fun.

You'll need to emulate, Warsong for megadrive, this Langrisser 1 the only game in the series to get a localisation. Langrisser 2 on MD, Der Langrisser SNES, Langrisser 4 PS1 have fan english translation patches. Warsong and Der Langrisser are the best of the bunch. Also while there are Chinese PC remakes of some of these games they aren't anywhere as good and not worth playing when the originals are easy to patch and emulate.

Literally nothing like Advance Wars other than being turn based. Much slower game with units you level up and waaaaay more depth to each individual unit.

For mobile (both iOS and Android), you could check out the Kingturn games. I think there are 4 or 5 of them out now. I've only played one of them, but I enjoyed it.

There's something in the neighborhood of a billion SRPGs out there. Grid based, even. Disgaea has the most fun with the limitations of the genre, imo. Vandal Hearts 1/2 are pretty great, also.
EDIT: How is... Fire Emblem etc similar to Advance Wars but not Disgaea / everything else mentioned? AW is just a generic strategy RPG. Is it different because they have map wide powers? I don't get the distinction.

Great Big War Game is very good. Well worth 2-3 bucks or however much it's selling for on Android/iOS now.

To be fair, there aren't many games like Advance Wars outside of RTS, like Warcraft/Starcraft, Command and Conquer, etc. and even then I'd hesitate to call them similar.
Well, it's multiplayer only at this point (online and offline), but if you want a free Advance Wars-like game for iOS (with some differences, like being able to buy upgrades for your units), you could always check out Swords & Arrows. I worked on the game myself, and we're in the process of making a new version with single player, more units etc.

Doesn't play exactly the same, but Civ Rev can kinda fit as it takes out a lot of the city management in favor of mostly just fucking with your units.

It may not seem like it at first but Unity of Command (PC) is very similar to Advance Wars. FOR INSTANCE:
Turn-based war game (obviously)
Fast-paced. Levels are over relatively quickly.
Very easy to understand with useful tooltips everywhere
Randomization is minimized. You'll know how much damage your attacks will do before committing.
Heavy puzzle elements as opposed to more traditional tactical military games. There are clearly superior strategies for every level.
It's a brilliant game. It's also a lot more difficult than Advance Wars but I'm not sure if that's something you'd be interested in.
There's a demo too!

lol the suggestions in this thread... even after what the OP said. If Tactics Ogre (bleh) and Valkyria Chronicles are "like" Advance Wars, let's just name every turn-based or semi-turn based game with a map there is. However, that could be what the OP actually wants, in that case, I would suggest looking checking out this site and it's (incomplete?) list of reviews:

As for direct Advance Wars successors (style or systems), it seems like the best you can do is look to western mobile games (although I have my doubts any of them would be as good), because AW made more of a splash in the west than it did in its home. Unfortunately, I don't have a great deal of experience here (the above site and its news are probably your best bet lacking more specific recommendations here), so I can't be much help, depending on how much like AW you want the game to be (if you had said Fire Emblem, this would be trivial lol).

I did some research myself and Skull of the Shogun seems to be quite good if a bit different.
I think my suggestion is actually pretty close and it's not often mentioned on GAF.

That's a common theme in a lot of Japanese strategy games, sadly, especially the campaign/character heavy ones. It's not too often you find ones with solid balance. The frustrating part is that it's rarely hidden away to some niche element or trick like being tucked away behind some oddball unit development method. It's always very blatant like one character or class who can essentially solo the entire field, hell a lot of the time it's the main character.
