Valkyria Chronicles?
Eh no. Even as a fan of both series, VC does nothing to scratch that Advance Wars itch for me (it's still a great game though)
Valkyria Chronicles?
That's like saying "well he likes Counter Strike and wants to play more CS type games, wouldn't he might want to play Halo?"
Probably not, actually! AW is a totally different game from SRPG's.
Woah, thats giving me major Battle Isle vibes
Future Wars on Steam and it is only $.99 right now!

It isn't great or anything, but I really enjoyed playing it. Scratched the AW itch for me.
XCOM EU?
Better to recommend him Halo than a third person shooter
It's not grid based, but Skulls of the Shogun scratches that AW itch for me. It's accessible but surprisingly deep.
I was going to suggest this games. Very well done, a lot of fun. On Android too.The Great Little War Game series is very similar to Advance Wars. I have them on iOS but I think the first couple of games are available on PC.
Wasn't there a Transformers strategy game released on ios a few years ago that was supposed to be very Advance Wars like?
I remember hearing it was pretty good.
EDIT: Transformers G1: Awakening

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on the 3ds is an often overlooked gem , it's great.
Any mention of Sentou Kokka yet? It's the gameplay of advanced wars but with real-life units. Tanks, stealth bombers, artillery, etc. Got a few sequels too.

Langrisser/ Warsong
I love this feature and it's a shame more games don't use it.
ITT: people who have never played Advance Wars.
Woah can't find any footage on Google! Must be very obscure!
Mecho Wars
It's very similar to AW, so I think it will be right up your alley.

I haven't played this one yet, but it got a raving review at
Pockettactics (which is a great site at reviewing TBS games)

Battle for Wesnoth
Massive TBS, with tons of content. It actually has more than a dozen different campaigns with their own self contained stories. Really, it's great. It's available for PC, Mac, Android and iOS.

Battle Academy 1 and 2
If you are serious about TBS, these are the real deal. They are very
expensive though. First one is on sale for $10 on iOS.

Which is better, 1 or 2?play shining force
I really like how this looks.
My itch for a new Advance Wars game is rising and I would like to know of good strategy games that are similar and that are not FFTactics, Shadow Wars, Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles or Tactics Ogre.
On any platforms, even iOS. Thanks!
