Advance Wars-like games

Advance Wars is a "Battle Isle style game" and Battle Worlds is a spiritual followup to Battle Isle.

So you know what to do.

Or you could play Battle Isle 3.

That's a strange way of looking at it seeing as the Wars series came first (though not in the west admittedly).

And I think the Battle Isle devs themselves said they were influenced by Neo Nectaris, a game that was released in the west as Military Madness.

One game not mentioned yet is Falcom's Vantage Master. It's billed as an srpg, but actually it's much more of a pure boardgamey strategy game in the vein of Advance Wars. There's no real customisation and you can't grind or anything like that. It's all about the strategy/tactics.

There's a free English PC version available here: http://www.falcom.com/vantage/index_e.html
It has a hilariously bad translation but there's hardly any story so it doesn't matter.

It's a game I like a lot but never seems to get any attention.

Military Madness has an important difference with Advance Wars: the infantry and vehicles don't can be created indefinitely. You can only repair vehicles in the factory. This make each unit much more precious.

I will try to recommend TBS games only, no RPG's.
The only exception will be Tactics Maiden. If you can get past the ugly presentation you will find a brilliant game here, with highly impressive tactical gameplay that has a fair share of similarities
with AW despite the RPG elements.

Now for TBS recommendations (all mobile):

Would you recommend RAVENMARK: Mercenaries? The one you recommended still isn't available for Android.

Ravenmark is pretty bad IMO :/ It's a shame, but mobile actually doesn't have a lot of games like AW.

I'm salivating at so many of these games I didn't know, lol.

Which is better, 1 or 2?

imo that really depends on personal preferences.. i love them both and usually play through both of em when i get the itch..
shining force 1 is a bit darker and shining force 2 looks a bit more colorful and has weirder characters in it.. it's really hard to say.
and if you get a chance also play through shining force cd, which is a compilation of the game gear games, plays the same though unfortunately they got rid of the town exploration..
