Agents of SHIELD has had a fascinating evolution

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread that makes AoS so good is they don't string out plots. Stuff that in others shows would be stretched out over half or a full season is generally resolved in a couple of episodes at most.

The plot moves quickly and that's a great thing.

I agree for the most part, but I also disagree because that's the exact problem S1 has until the Hydra reveal.

I did mention it!

Who are they trying to force?

I'm still not a fan of Fitz and Simmons and maybe I'm crazy but I don't think they have any chemistry as a couple. It's felt like at best a one way street for most of the show and slightly creepy how they finally got together after Fitz basically hounded her until she relented.

They're likeable characters on their own but it's like watching a brother and sister when they're together. Gross.

I said it many times before the show has the best pacing of any hour long drama i ever seen. They get more done in 3 epsiodes than most shows do all season

Oh, then I completely disagree. If anything, I praise the show for taking its time to slowly have them ready to become a couple. And what do you mean they don't have any chemistry?

The only thing I can sort of see your point on is how it started off quite one-sided, but damn, all the shit he did for her finally managed to get her to see him in a different light. Concerning their relationship, what made me like him even more
was when he helped Simmons go back into the alien planet in order to rescue that other guy she liked. Awkward af situation, but he did it with little to no complaints because he truly does love her. I don't think he gave her much grief over her sleeping with him either, which is good, seeing as how they obviously weren't a thing at that point.

More recognizable marvel characters like ghost rider would be nice. Made up and virtually unknown characters are ok, I guess, but if I'm watching something marvel I'd like to see more people with names like ghost rider and deathlock (even though deathlock really sucked in this show).

They did, who you think gave him the juice?

The build up to that was just.....

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Yeah, I haven't read this whole thread, but for those who haven't seen it since the first couple of episodes in S1 or whatever, binge watch it all. The crappy first few episodes are totally justified after you see the whole picture.

Also, whatever you think is going to happen as you approach and enter season 4, you're wrong. Buckle in and enjoy the ride, seriously.

(Also, S1 probably isn't that bad for new viewers. Part of what made it so tough for those of us watching it new was the fact that we DIDN'T know how much better it would get. And the schedule was nuts with long crappy breaks. We had lots of time to dwell on how episodic they were. People watching it new probably won't get that so much.)

Hey, so I have no desire to druge through bad television. If necessary I can glean plot points from the internet.

So where should I start watching this show?

Also, I thought most of Daredevil sucked and I havent even bothered with any other Marvel shows after watching the first half of the first episode of Jessica Jones.

S1. The thing about S1 is that the big beats hinge off of character development, and if you skip stuff you'll miss a lot of it.

Everyone has a different definition of bad. I didn't think S1 was bad, just really bland for the first half. The tone is nothing like the Netflix shows so it's hard to say if you'd like this based on those shows without knowing what you didn't like.

AoS is much more character driven which is why many recommend watching it all since watching the characters evolve is one of the best parts of the show and worth sitting through some mediocre plotting.

I'd watch the first 2 episodes knowing that Ep2 is probably the 2nd worst of the show so if you can stomach that then it pretty much only gets better.

Man, i just have a hard time wading through hours of mediocrity to get to good stuff. There's so many shows/books/movies/games vying for my time.

Just use the skip/fast forward button. I did that to Once Upon a Time during the boring parts and didn't miss any plot points at all.

I'm rewatching season 1 and it's not that bad. I hated season 1 before after seeing where the characters are in season 4 rewatching season 1 and seeing all the changes and development makes season 1 enjoyable imo.

The point of this thread is to point out that people who thought like this is missing out.

Maybe Marvel should've did these later seasons as a good first impression, then. Because if you don't give me a good quality episode, why should I devote time?

Then don't? We're not going to force you, we're just merely saying that yea, people who dipped during S1 been missing out for awhile now.

The only decent thing about the show was Ward but after he died and then got possessed or whatever and all of those awful boring episodes on that other planet I just gave up on it.

Plus I can't stand Daisy and I guess she's basically been pushed to the headline of the show. So yeah, that was it for me.

I feel that way about Breaking Bad. I found the first season pretty hard to get into the first time I watched it. But that show gets much better in S2 and becomes truly great in S3.

That said, I doubt AoS is anywhere near BB level...

Yeah i agree, first season and first half of season 2 were shitty, but the rest is amazing! Especially the LMD arc, best arc in a long time!

Also yeah, FITZ is the best, as well as the actor playing him (i should google it)

I hate how this show became 'divorced' from the movies. Or rather, the show still mentions stuff that happened, but the movies just ignore SHIELD completely.

Guess the same can be said for the Netflix shows?

Who are they trying to force?

For me, Fitz and Simmons. I've never been a fan of their romance, and they don't have that kind of chemistry. If anything, Fitz and Mack have more chemistry, but I know the show would never go down that road with those characters. Daisy and Tripp was another, although I actually liked their back and forth, and they had chemistry. Then again, Chloe Bennett has chemistry with almost anyone. Coulson and May. They won't become a couple, but there's no denying that the series like to "tease" the ship.

To be honest, I'm just over forced shipping. It's one thing when the cast members have natural chemistry with one another, and you enjoy seeing pairs of people together on screen, even if it's not romantic. But ultimately, it doesn't matter. My dislike of the show is far deeper than just ships, and I've been there since Season 1, day 1. I tend to stick with shows for as long as possible, but I just completely dropped it after about episode 4 or 5 of this current season. I don't even think I finished off the Ghost Rider story arc, because I just don't care about any of these characters. If I'm being honest with myself, I don't think I ever really did. I liked Coulson, but his character has become more and more unlikable over the series. I love Ming Na, but I think May is boring and she's not given much to work with. She has her moments, but overall, the stoic badass pilot is boring. Daisy has gone from quirky hacker Whedon Woman Protagonist 101 to a completely different character that I hadn't decided if I liked or not, but overall she's still my favorite of the bunch. Fitz and Simmons are dull as fuck, although I think her character has improved over the series, but I still don't find them terribly compelling.

The most interesting thing they did with Fitz is when he was traumatized after the events of Season 1, and I thought they'd actually create a character with severe PTSD and mental trauma, but nope, they fixed him up right quick, then hooked him up with Gemma. As a hopeless romantic, you'd think I'd eat it up, but by that point, I felt that both Fitz and Simmons were so different and on such different trajectories that a romantic relationship didn't work right. It's like when they hooked up Stefan and Caroline in Vampire Diaries. There was a point in the series where a relationship with those two made sense, but by the time it actually happened, that window was closed and it felt like the characters weren't into each other anymore.

But I'm not trying to shit in people's cereal. It doesn't matter if I like the show or not, as long as people that do like it are enjoying it.

I agree with the thread title in that the show has had a fascinating evolution from what it was in that first season, but I can't say I agree with the evolution being actual good and compelling television to watch. Some solid characterization would go a long way. I dropped out of Once Upon A Time for similar reasons. I loved the first four seasons, but once the Frozen stuff happened, it just killed my interest in the series. I was tempted to check out the later seasons since it's on Netflix, but I'm chipping away at shows I'm more interested in at the moment. I may even finish Season 4 of AoS if my backlist of shows clears up.

Timeout. Fitz/Simmons is anything but a forced ship. To see them go from two nerdy people who no one could tell the difference between to the two characters I want to see do well and love knowing one of them will definitely die by show's end, has been amazing. They have great chemistry and is the one ship besides YoYo/Mack that I love seeing

If you compare most of the AoS arcs to full Marvel Netflix seasons (which is the only way they are comparable imo, as you cant compare season for season due to length), then I think AoS has at least three of the top five story arcs of Marvel TV. Two of them happened this season - and they have already set up a third that could be spectacular.

Fitz and Simmons are one of the most realistic and earned relationships in television.

Facts.

I've never thought it was that bad, but those episodes are really slow. I re-watched it, and boy was I getting a little burned on it because it felt like shit took forever until the halfway point. I realize why they had to spin their wheels, but they could have done a better job with those episodes.

All this talk about FitzSimmons, but for me, there was really only one thing I didn't love about Season 4 and it was

Coulson and May. I really don't like them together and wish they hadn't bothered. I was actually super optimistic early into the LMD arc. They had been pulling a lot of swerves, so I was hoping Coulson and May was one of those tricks. Like, Coulson noticed something was up with May, so he was pushing forward this romance thing because he didn't think May was actually May, and he was gonna trick the LMD, but really they were just platonic friends. But they've kept up with this thing now, that Coulson and May long to be together and it really doesn't work for me.

Something happened between S2 and S3 inside the writer's room, and it led to a lot of really bad decisions in S3 w/ romantic pairings (And horrible things happening to them) dominating the show

Coulson/whatserface
May/Andrew
Skye/Lincoln
Fitz/Simmons
Bobbi/Hunter

It was like they got a note from ABC saying: "NEEDS TO APPEAL TO GREYS ANATOMY FANS MORE" and this was their half-baked attempt at it or something. And Fitz/Simmons being jammed together suddenly was part of that for me- it felt sudden and a reversal of where they had been going the previous two seasons with them.

Yeah it's terrible. It works so much better as a Mal/Zoe (from Firefly) type relationship

I made a similar point earlier, though I do actually like most of those. Coulson and Rosalind was super forced beyond anything you've seen before, and Skye/Lincoln didn't feel too forced as an actual relationship on paper, but boy did they not have any chemistry. The rest I was fine with.

I'm still just blown away that this show, which started off with fair criticisms of it being too boring/generic, has become the craziest part of the MCU. Reminds me of why I love comic book worlds in the first place.

Flash does that too. Not sure why I'm seeing that show trashed in a few posts here.
