Who are they trying to force?
For me, Fitz and Simmons. I've never been a fan of their romance, and they don't have that kind of chemistry. If anything, Fitz and Mack have more chemistry, but I know the show would never go down
that road with those characters. Daisy and Tripp was another, although I actually liked their back and forth, and they had chemistry. Then again, Chloe Bennett has chemistry with almost anyone. Coulson and May. They won't become a couple, but there's no denying that the series like to "tease" the ship.
To be honest, I'm just over forced shipping. It's one thing when the cast members have natural chemistry with one another, and you enjoy seeing pairs of people together on screen, even if it's not romantic. But ultimately, it doesn't matter. My dislike of the show is far deeper than just ships, and I've been there since Season 1, day 1. I tend to stick with shows for as long as possible, but I just completely dropped it after about episode 4 or 5 of this current season. I don't even think I finished off the Ghost Rider story arc, because I just don't care about any of these characters. If I'm being honest with myself, I don't think I ever really did. I liked Coulson, but his character has become more and more unlikable over the series. I love Ming Na, but I think May is boring and she's not given much to work with. She has her moments, but overall, the stoic badass pilot is boring. Daisy has gone from quirky hacker Whedon Woman Protagonist 101 to a completely different character that I hadn't decided if I liked or not, but overall she's still my favorite of the bunch. Fitz and Simmons are dull as fuck, although I think her character has improved over the series, but I still don't find them terribly compelling.
The most interesting thing they did with Fitz is when he was traumatized after the events of Season 1, and I thought they'd actually create a character with severe PTSD and mental trauma, but nope, they fixed him up right quick, then hooked him up with Gemma. As a hopeless romantic, you'd think I'd eat it up, but by that point, I felt that both Fitz and Simmons were so different and on such different trajectories that a romantic relationship didn't work right. It's like when they hooked up Stefan and Caroline in Vampire Diaries. There was a point in the series where a relationship with those two made sense, but by the time it actually happened, that window was closed and it felt like the characters weren't into each other anymore.
But I'm not trying to shit in people's cereal. It doesn't matter if I like the show or not, as long as people that do like it are enjoying it.
I agree with the thread title in that the show has had a fascinating evolution from what it was in that first season, but I can't say I agree with the evolution being actual good and compelling television to watch. Some solid characterization would go a long way. I dropped out of Once Upon A Time for similar reasons. I loved the first four seasons, but once the Frozen stuff happened, it just killed my interest in the series. I was tempted to check out the later seasons since it's on Netflix, but I'm chipping away at shows I'm more interested in at the moment. I may even finish Season 4 of AoS if my backlist of shows clears up.
