The power button of my Kindle Paperwhite has crapped out on me. Hopefully I can coast on firing up the device by opening the cover, I dread the day a hard reset would be needed lol.

I am definitely one of those people who barely ever picked up a book before I got my ereader. I read more books during my first year with my Paperwhite than I have for my entire life. lol

I was just burning through books. I have slowed down now, but it is picking back up again and I'm still reading much more than I used to.

Before I bought my Kindle at the beginning of 2011 you could count the books I'd read for leisure (as opposed to school) in the previous five years on one hand.

My Goodreads target this year is 35.

Curious. I thought the tech wasn't quite there yet. I'm also not sure about that source. I think they also reported that there would be a Voyage 2 coming out last year that would have a solar battery and that never materialized. Wait and see I guess.

Yeah, Goodereader isn't a very good source. Waiting for another site to report on it.

A mudslide of fun!
Thinking about getting the cheapest Kindle, mainly to read articles on. Is there an easy way to read articles? Can you access your email if you email the article to yourself?

Apparently every Kindle model now has a jailbreak up the wazoo. If you're into that stuff, just letting you know. Details on mobileread forums.

I pulled the trigger on the $50 kindle fire. Actually, I only paid $30 but feel ripped off. This thing feels like a piece of shit.

Are there any intetesting uses for this including jailbreaking(?)

This thread is about the e-ink Kindle ereaders not the crappy tablets.

I wonder how many people have paid for classic novels just because the kindle shows paid editions first most of the time. I had to dig to find the free copies of Pride and Prejudice.

Was thinking of getting an Oasis to replace my stolen Voyage. Before I do so, did it solve all the issues the Voyage had with inconsistent lighting with the auto adjust? Would really hate to have to deal with that again. Got the first replaced and the second was even worse.

The Oasis doesn't have that feature at all.

Is your issue with with the light itself or the auto adjust feature? There is no auto adjust feature on the Oasis (and you can turn it off on the Voyage). If it's the front light itself, well it's always going to be hit or miss unfortunately. Usually the problem gets better as production goes on, but inconsistency seems to be a problem with these front lights. Something about the way the screen is produced. I've definitely heard people complain about the Oasis's lighting.

Oasis has more front lights so the selling feature was more consistent lighting. That being said I haven't seen one in person so I can't say if the lighting is any better than the Voyage. As others have pointed out, there's no auto-lighting feature on the Oasis, you have to control the light setting yourself.

I've been putting off buying a Kindle for a year, which is kind of a good thing since they just keep dropping in price. If I buy a Paperwhite with the ads, can you pay later on down the line to remove them? Is the 3G worth it?

Yes you can pay Amazon $30 later to remove the ads.

If you're in no rush, Kobo teased a new e-reader announcement coming in August. Might be worth a look before deciding

Hmm, sounds good. Might as well wait it out since I've already gone this long without an e-reader.

Just bought the James Bond series. 14 books. Hope it wasn't a dumb move but buying the set was way cheaper and I deeply love Casino royale and most of the movies

But what if I don't have a Toronto address or library card? My library doesn't have the books but they are on kindle Unlimited

That's the problem you have to have a library that carries it. Still you could go to a regular library and check out a real book before buying the eBooks to see if you like the writing style.

I just read some of the free samples on Amazon and was into it and liked the bundle price so that worked

So I got my new Paperwhite the other day.

For some reason, the firmware seems to be on 5.7.4.1 when I've read that there's a newer update out.

I've tried resetting but it's still staying the on the same version with no update prompt or anything?

I'm in the UK if that matters.

I used to have the latest version of a Kindle DX (the graphite, the latest model they released before discontinuing.

Although I love the e-ink screen, the interface, buttons and overall feel was clumsy and awkward at times. Got it in 2011, sold it a few months ago (2016). Got a lot of use out of it in 5 years.

Can always do a manual download from the website.

The lighting is one of my favourite things about the kindle. I used to have a bedside lamp to read but the kindle's light is so much better and actually helps me to immerse myself even more into whatever I'm reading.

I happily gave away or sold my Kindles to people who wanted or needed them so now I'm reading on iPad and paper, but I do miss the eInk screen quite a bit.

I didn't expect to want it so badly.

I don't know how you do it. My eyes can't handle even an hour on an iPad screen to read. Yet I can marathon my paperwhite for hours on end. I also enjoy that I can really only read on my kindle. I end up fiddling on YouTube and GAF on my iPad.

I wish I could marathon on my Kindle. But the back light on it bothers my eyes during the night time. No idea why I have such trouble with e-ink.

My Paperwhite developed a tiny crack in the middle of the screen :(

I haven't dropped it or banged it to my knowledge, so the only thing I presume may have happened is I've leant on it by accident...

It looks like a smudge when I have no backlight on, but it's bleeding through when I turn it up.

Amazon are sending me a new one though (returning my old one). Great customer service yet again from them.
