Amazon Prime Store Card

Lame. Already have the Chase card with 3%.

I suppose I should apply for this one. I buy a lot on Amazon,.

I'm genuinely considering just eventually getting this unless somebody tells me there's some shady shit with the store card and its payments (Reviews are kind of ass but it might be because financing isn't that popular as free money).

The chase card would be nice since it's only 2% less and it has the added bonus of giving you money in restaurants... but man considering that outside of restaurants all I buy is from Amazon, it's a really tough choice I'll have to make in 5 or so months

Anyone know if you need to be the primary account holder to get the 5% or is it anyone with Prime? Also anyone know if you can pay off the store card with a credit card?

I used and made payments (electronic fund transfers from my bank account) to my store card monthly for around four years (2010-2014) and never had a single issue. The bank that manages the cards changed its name last year (from GE to Synchrony), but as far as I can tell that didn't change anything about their services.

Bank account payments only.

Can someone explain to me what it means by statement credit? I bought two things so far with this card but i don't really understand where the 5% back went?

They'll subtract 5% of what you owe. So if you got something for $100 then the statement will show $95 due I think.

Just get a US Bank Cash+ card and set your 5% category to Electronics, Department stores or whatever. Then go to the store and price match Amazon. Pretty much anyone does these days. You can use it up to $2000 instead of $150.

Stealth edit: Amazon charges tax in my state so I don't save anything by shopping with them anymore. When I use my Freedom they increase the prices because its during the holidays and it's still cheaper in the stores.

That's far better than the 3% cash back from using the Amazon Chase card at Amazon (though it doesn't cap at $149 to be fair). They should upgrade the credit card holders too, not just the store card holders.

I jumped on this recently, and so far so good. Only downside to having this card is that it just further enables me to buy shit from Amazon lol.

I'm confused

"For orders of $149 or more you can choose between promotional financing and 5% Back."

so you still get cash back on orders over 149?:

Yes, as long as you don't choose promotional financing instead. From the Amazon store card page:

Thanks for the free $40. Guess my Amazon visa rots now. More room for black cards in my wallet.

Just to clarify, the financing is what's "capped," or rather there is a minimum. They're not going to give you 6 months financing for purchases under $150. The 5% is automatically applied under $150 and is an option above $150, that's all. It's just a Target card to be honest.

Except that even with 5% at target.. you're still getting ripped off!

I think I know what you're saying? But the truth is nowadays if you want the best prices for certain things you have to shop at multiple stores. Depending on what you want, sometimes Costco has the best prices, or Target, or Home Depot, or the outlet. Wherever. A lot of the times Amazon isn't even the best price for me, but I'm right there looking at the thing and may as well just click the button.

The important thing is that when people shop at any of these places that they always take advantage of these cards. I saw the first page talking about interest rates and /facepalmed. Interest rate should never even cross your mind, you're not going to be paying interest. They could offer me a card at 99% apr and I'd still accept because it will genuinely never affect me.

Even if you don't join every single store out there, joining the ones you do frequent will save you money in the end - it's a fact.

discover it already pays 5% on amazon

and doesn't have a stupid interest rate like that
Not year-round. Usually just October-December. And yeah, the interest rate is ridiculous, but it doesn't make a difference if you pay your balance every month. For that reason, I'll probably start using this card again for most of my Amazon purchases instead of my Sallie Mae MasterCard (also gets 5%).

Anyway, I did a "test" purchase with my old store card that I haven't used in years. The fine print says that the 5% credit will appear within 8 weeks or whatever the standard language is, but mine was automatically deducted from my balance when my statement cut (only a couple of days after I made the purchase).

Wait, why? Wouldn't it be better to have all your expenses on one card, since Sallie Mae also gives you 5% back on groceries?

Well, I already use a few cards for different things, so this isn't really a change for me — I use the Sallie Mae for groceries pretty much exclusively for example. Most things I've ordered from Amazon with the SM card have gotten me the 5% back, but not everything; the handful of times that I've ordered food items (stocking up on protein bars), I didn't get the bonus. I guess they don't qualify as "bookstore" purchases, as the Sallie Mae terms dictate. I was surprised when I saw that on my statement/account, but I guess it has to do with the different merchant codes that Amazon uses for certain purchases? I don't really know.

Oh I didn't know that Sallie Mae could see what you're actually ordering from Amazon. That sucks. I order quest bars from Amazon every week.

It's possible that if you throw a non-food item in with your order, it might "trick" them. I just know that the couple of times I've placed food-only orders, I didn't get it the bonus.

I actually love the Sallie Mae card for things like that, though, because it confirms your points bonus right when the transaction posts — no need to wait for the statement like some other cards.

If people still think Amazon is the best deal on everything you need to start looking around again. Just this week I need printer ink and Amazon was $5/18% more expensive then Best Buy on a single cartridge. When I went to Best Buy they gave me an additional 15% off for being a Best Buy member. Amazon has been sending me coupon codes for groceries but they are even higher priced then Whole Foods.
