Seriously. Someone help me understand, why should anyone care? I mean they go from a shitty sign to a shitty sign, so what?
Maybe you just don't understand or appreciate design, which is fine (so long as you're not in a position to be doing design). As somebody who does, it's easy for me to tell when something has had actual effort put into it, and when it hasn't, and I very much care about the difference.
In the bigger picture, it's the argument of putting effort into everything you do versus deciding that certain things aren't worth effort. I think, as a people/country, we used to care more about putting genuine effort into what we did, what we created, and so on. Now, we're more a country of "fuck it" types. It's just a sign, right? Who cares if it looks good or not? The problem is, more and more people are saying that about a lot of things. Me, personally, I think if you're going to make something, put real effort into it, no matter what it is.
However, I'm also in disagreement with stuff like that John K blog post, where people get so hung up on retro design (which, by the way, I absolutely love) that they then can't appreciate the beauty and talent in modern design. Sure, some of the stuff he shows looks like crap, but it's kind of short sighted to take credit away from things like the iPhone. As simple as it may look, part of its power in design is that it took a lot of the over-complexity of other smart phones and reduced the design down to its most purest form.
