America Is F*cked. Graphically, At Least.

I can't get as nostalgic as him about the motor lodge. I agree with everything else, but some things are just not objects of cultural pride.

It's nice to see someone as passionate as I am about that sort of thing. Sometimes I feel like I'm all alone. (._. )

Couldnt agree more. The thing is that mostly the people who have a company or are mostly recognized in that industry is because the got contacts. Shit same thing happens here in Puerto Rico. This one time there was a company where they were looking for a new logo and new comercials idea to be recognized. Hell my idea was the fucking best. Instead they went with the son of one of the guys in the office and took his idea! Shitty logo and nothing new. Fuck them! This world is fucking screwed!

Terrible but maybe that's exactly what she asked for?

There is a hideos Ice Cream parlor sign in town here, and I found out that the owner dictated the ugliness.

Hardly the fault of the graphics designer.

i was gonna say. I wouldnt doubt there are some incompetent graphic artists out there, but more often than not, it's probably what exactly the owner asked for.

I don't understand at all. Why does anyone give a fuck?

Seriously. Someone help me understand, why should anyone care? I mean they go from a shitty sign to a shitty sign, so what?

And the seemingly universal hate on the internet for Comic Sans, what is up with that?

It looks like shit. A 5 year old could have designed it. The old sign is shitty only because its rusted and no longer works. The new sign is shitty because its design is shit.

just stop man. design is important to some people, it obviously isn't to you.

@blog link: Anything you watch video on, you're going to want it to be black. Otherwise, it's going to distract your eyes. Otherwise, people just want things tiny as hell, the smaller the better. I prefer a well designed sleek little thing to the bubble plastic on those clock radios/walkie talkies that they have on that site.

I've been upset at some of the signage that's been going on around my town as well. I wish I had pictures of this funeral home's sign that was finally replaced a few years ago. It was this big forest green sign, painted sheet metal that you could see the seams, and it was the most generic font in the world. I couldn't believe this monstrosity when it was put up. It was the size of a Wal-Mart sign at the entrance to my town. Thankfully it was replaced with a very tasteful brick & black background sign with a nice picture of a tree on it. Not awesome, but not an eyesore.

Yep. This sort of stuff makes me want to eat cat poop in frustration.

Let's fucking kill the charm of our hotel.

Restore that shit if you can't deal with dirt.

Holy shit i'd fucking resign if that was the best thing i could come up with at work.

And US$50,000.00???????????????????????

:lol :lol :lol

Disagree with that being the only reason. It would look ugly(to me) even if it was brand new and working.

Am I being too troll-like? I really wanted to know why some people seem to be so offended by this and a typeface(by which I mean Comic Sans), but I'll just leave if that's the case.

It's a bummer, no doubt. But bad graphic design isn't exactly new.

There are plenty of old signs with terrible graphic design. The good stuff just tends to stay around longer and get more notoriety. You can't look at a classic old sign and assume all signs from that era were at the same level of quality.

no it's cool, you are welcome to chill in this thread. Comic Sans is just bland and ugly, that's why I don't like it.

I gotta disagree with sloth on this completely. The old sign looks great and to charge that much for that new sign is fucking ludicrous. They are probably offended because they somehow deal with graphic design...

i wonder how they would react to the ghetto ass Signs in DR painted right on the walls... :lol

I see where the guy is coming from. A horrible end result considering the amount of money invested.

At the same time though, that could easily have been the 100th revision and what the customer wanted to settle with. I've done projects in the past where I show a client my rough draft and they tell me to stop because they want to run with that version.

Yeah it depends on your taste. You would agree that it was a classic look that some people are fond of and identify as "American" right? I'm not outraged but I can see that whoever made the new sign sucks and put no effort into it. And got paid.

Maybe you just don't understand or appreciate design, which is fine (so long as you're not in a position to be doing design). As somebody who does, it's easy for me to tell when something has had actual effort put into it, and when it hasn't, and I very much care about the difference.

In the bigger picture, it's the argument of putting effort into everything you do versus deciding that certain things aren't worth effort. I think, as a people/country, we used to care more about putting genuine effort into what we did, what we created, and so on. Now, we're more a country of "fuck it" types. It's just a sign, right? Who cares if it looks good or not? The problem is, more and more people are saying that about a lot of things. Me, personally, I think if you're going to make something, put real effort into it, no matter what it is.

However, I'm also in disagreement with stuff like that John K blog post, where people get so hung up on retro design (which, by the way, I absolutely love) that they then can't appreciate the beauty and talent in modern design. Sure, some of the stuff he shows looks like crap, but it's kind of short sighted to take credit away from things like the iPhone. As simple as it may look, part of its power in design is that it took a lot of the over-complexity of other smart phones and reduced the design down to its most purest form.

New sign is kinda boring looking, but the old one was an antiqued piece of shit

Also there are some people in this thread who need to relax and stop lamenting the death of graphic design. If people didn't like it, then these designs wouldn't exist.
