On the West Coast, so this won't be on for a few hours. Let me say though that the House of Blues performances were awful. 48 performances and they couldn't find more than 2-3 good ones? That's bad. Best case scenario is that this group is like last year, some good artists that couldn't all bring it to the big stage.
And that was pretty rough, but at least a few of them delivered while some of the others were at least talented. This group, from what we've seen, seems to be lacking much vocal talent at all. It seems like the scrapheap of artists that weren't good enough to audition for The Voice. Even the good ones don't have much vocal range. Notice how many of these singers sound whiny and unappealing when they try to hit their upper range? The only one with decent power and tone in their upper range is Jax, who would have been at most a Top 10 finisher in Idol's glory years. I really like Trevor, Simeon, Clark, and Qasim, but they sound more like niche artists and not "singer's singers". That's cool as a change of pace, more stylized artists, but the show gets boring without a good group of belters too.
As a point of comparison, I've been rewatching the Season 4 Finals on YouTube and, my God, what a difference. Pretty much all of them had good vocal range and power. Carrie, Vonzell, Nadia, Anwar, and Bo nailed high notes effortlessly and had memorable sounds and visual styles. Constantine, Jessica, and Linsdey had good vocal ability too and their own respective sounds. Even the lower tier from that season (Anthony, Scott, Nikko, Mikalah) all had pretty powerful voices and some good performances, even if they had problems with tuning.
Compare that to this lot, where I'm struggling to find anyone with some range and power. Here's hoping some people step up and that last week was not a fair representation. I can't go through another replay of Seasons 12-13 with only 2-4 good singers that can deliver on the big stage.
